Set up Windows Hello at Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options. Choose a PIN, facial recognition, or fingerprint recognition, select Set up, and follow the prompts. To hide password sign-in for a Microsoft account on this PC, enable the separate Windows Hello-only setting on the same page. That setting does not delete your Microsoft account password.
Set up a Windows Hello sign-in method
- Open Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options.
- Choose PIN (Windows Hello), Facial recognition (Windows Hello), or Fingerprint recognition (Windows Hello).
- Select Set up and complete the on-screen instructions. The available choices can vary with your device configuration.
PIN
A Windows Hello PIN is tied to the Windows device and is distinct from your Microsoft account password. It does not require a fingerprint reader or camera.

Face
Face sign-in requires a Windows Hello-compatible infrared camera, either built into the PC or connected externally. A standard webcam alone may not meet that requirement.
Fingerprint
Fingerprint sign-in requires a fingerprint reader. If your PC does not have one, a compatible external reader is an option, but check that it works with your Windows version and security configuration before buying it.

Make Windows 11 offer Windows Hello instead of a password
After setting up a Hello method, return to Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options and expand Additional settings. Turn on For improved security, only allow Windows Hello sign-in for Microsoft accounts on this device. Microsoft says this option is available only when you sign in to Windows with a Microsoft account. With it enabled, Windows offers Hello face, fingerprint, or PIN instead of the password option for that account on this device. The setting does not remove the Microsoft account password from the account itself or from other places where it is used. Microsoft’s sign-in options guidance notes that available settings can depend on device configuration.
Choose a method that fits your PC

Microsoft does not provide a quantitative speed or effectiveness comparison for these choices in its setup guidance, so choose based on available hardware, account policy, and your preferred sign-in method. Details on using a security key with a personal Microsoft account are separate from Windows Hello setup.

If an external fingerprint reader is not offered
For Windows 11 version 24H2 or later, compatibility with some non-ESS (Enhanced sign-in security) devices can depend on ESS settings. Microsoft says a non-ESS device may require ESS to be turned off. This is not a change to make casually: disabling ESS removes existing ESS enrollments and associated credentials, including passkeys, which may need to be set up again. ESS-related availability is rolling out in phases, so the relevant setting may not appear on every PC. Check the exact reader, PC, and Windows version against Microsoft’s Enhanced sign-in security guidance before changing ESS or purchasing a reader.
Recover a forgotten PIN
- At the Windows sign-in screen, select I forgot my PIN if that option is shown, then complete the account verification steps.
- If the option is not available, sign in using another offered method, such as your password, and open Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options > PIN (Windows Hello) to change or reset the PIN.
Microsoft’s PIN reset instructions describe these recovery routes. A PIN reset is not the same as changing the Microsoft account password.

Windows Hello, passkeys, and account passwords are different
Windows Hello can unlock a passkey, which is a credential used to sign in to supported websites, apps, and services. A passkey may be stored on the Windows device or in another supported credential location. That is different from enabling Windows Hello-only sign-in for the PC, and neither action by itself deletes the Microsoft account password. See Microsoft’s overview of passkeys in Windows.
Removing the password from a Microsoft account itself is a separate account-level process with its own authentication and recovery considerations. Do not confuse that change with the Windows setting that removes password sign-in only on this device. Microsoft’s account-level passwordless guidance covers that separate process.
