On some fresh Windows 11 installations, clicking the small learn more link in the Microsoft-account sign-in explanation reportedly opens a screen for creating a local account. The behavior was reproduced on a fresh non-Insider installation, but it is not an officially documented setup option and may not appear on every build.

Find the account sign-in explanation and click the smaller learn more link embedded in that paragraph. Do not assume it is the separate learn more link near the prominent Next button; the report distinguishes the paragraph link as the one that led to local-account creation.

If a Who’s going to use this device? screen appears, follow its prompts to create the local account. If it does not, the workaround may not be available in your installation; setup screens can change.

PC Gamer reported on September 14, 2026, that it reproduced this behavior on a fresh, non-Insider Windows 11 installation, while noting that coverage across other versions was unclear. PC Gamer’s report is evidence of a reported behavior, not a guarantee or Microsoft-supported procedure.
Availability depends on the Windows version and setup image
Microsoft identified Windows 11 2026 Update, version 26H2, as the current release on its Windows 11 download page when checked October 7, 2026. A Microsoft September 22, 2026 OOBE update applies to Windows 11 24H2, 25H2, and 26H2, but does not document whether the small-link behavior works on those releases. Neither the current-release listing nor the update note establishes that the trick works across editions, builds, or installation images.
Choose between a local account and a Microsoft account
A local account is specific to one device and can be used to sign in without an internet connection. A Microsoft account connects Windows to Microsoft cloud services and can sync settings and files across devices. Microsoft recommends signing in with a Microsoft account; its guidance also warns that forgetting a local-account password without a password-reset disk may leave you unable to recover access.

Switch to a local account after setup if needed
If the link is absent and you prefer not to rely on an unverified setup workaround, you can finish setup with a Microsoft account and use Microsoft’s documented account-type change later:

Open Settings.

Go to Accounts > Your info.

Choose the option to sign in with a local account instead, then follow the prompts.

The menu wording may vary slightly by Windows version. Microsoft documents this route in its instructions for switching to a local account.

Why older command-line bypasses may fail
Do not treat older command-line methods as universal substitutes for the link. Reporting on recent Dev and Beta preview builds says Microsoft is disabling known local-account workarounds, including OOBEBYPASSNRO and start ms-cxh:localonly. Windows Central relayed Microsoft’s explanation: “These methods often inadvertently skip critical setup screens, potentially causing users to exit OOBE with a device that is not fully configured for use.” That statement concerns those older methods; it does not establish whether the small-link behavior is supported or permanent.
