Windows 11 efficiency is less about a universal speed boost and more about removing the small frictions that interrupt your routine. Use Snap layouts to stop rearranging windows, tune notifications to protect focus without missing important alerts, review startup apps, bring frequently used tools within reach, and choose a power mode that fits whether you are plugged in or working on battery.
Start with the problem you notice most, change one setting area at a time, and check whether it helps your actual work. Open Settings with Windows+I; if a label has moved after an update, search Settings for the feature name.

Arrange recurring work with Snap layouts
Snap layouts let you place open windows into preset arrangements, while Snap Assist helps fill the remaining spaces with other open apps. This is useful when you repeatedly work across the same set of windows, such as a document beside a browser.
- Open the windows you want to arrange.
- Press Windows+Z, or hover over a window’s maximize button to see available Snap layouts.
- Select a layout position. When prompted, choose another open window to fill an available space.
Windows may let you return to a saved arrangement through a Snap group. Layout choices vary partly with display size.

To control the behavior, open Settings > System > Multitasking and expand the Snap settings. There you can choose whether Windows shows suggestions for what to snap next, displays layouts when you hover over the maximize button or drag a window to the top of the screen, includes snapped windows in the taskbar, Task View, and Alt+Tab, and lets you snap before dragging a window all the way to an edge. Turn on the behaviors that match how you work rather than enabling every prompt by default. Microsoft explains Snap layouts and Snap Assist.
Reduce interruptions without silencing every app
For selective control, open Settings > System > Notifications. Review senders individually: keep alerts from apps that need an immediate response and reduce or disable notifications from apps that can wait. This avoids the tradeoff of missing useful messages just to quiet less important ones. Microsoft’s notification guidance describes notification controls and Do not disturb.

Use a Focus session for a bounded quiet period
When you want a defined work interval, start a Focus session from the Clock app or Focus settings. Windows can turn on Do not disturb during a session, hide taskbar badges and flashing, and show a notification when the session ends. Choose a session when you want fewer interruptions for a while; use per-app notification settings when you need to control which alerts remain available throughout the day. Microsoft’s Focus sessions overview covers these options.

Review startup apps, not just the startup list
Apps that start automatically can affect startup speed and overall system performance, Microsoft says. To review the apps Windows lists, open Settings > Apps > Startup, or open Task Manager and select Startup apps.

- Look through the listed apps and identify ones you recognize.
- Turn off only apps you do not need to open immediately after sign-in.
- Leave tools enabled when you rely on them being ready as soon as you log in.
Avoid disabling everything as a blanket tune-up. The right choice depends on what you use, and not every startup behavior necessarily appears in the same list because apps can use other mechanisms. If the PC feels slow, Task Manager can also help you inspect CPU, memory, disk, and network activity; a startup change is not a guaranteed fix for every slowdown. Microsoft Support’s startup-app guidance explains the controls.
Make frequently used apps and folders easier to reach
Pin the apps and folders you use often to Start so they are easier to find. You can organize Start pins into folders if grouping related tools makes navigation quicker. For the taskbar, choose whether app icons are centered or left-aligned, and adjust pinned apps and available system-tray visibility to suit how many tools you switch between.

A compact taskbar can reduce visual clutter; keeping more items visible may be preferable if you move among many apps. These are workflow choices, not guaranteed performance improvements. Current Microsoft guidance keeps the taskbar at the bottom, so ordinary Settings customization does not include moving it to another screen edge. See Microsoft’s taskbar customization guidance.
