What Weglot 2.0 changes on a WordPress site
Weglot adds a translated layer to the existing site rather than asking you to duplicate every post and page in WordPress. The original language is the language in which your site was created. A destination language is a language into which Weglot translates that content. After the connection is complete, visitors can select a destination language and receive a language-specific version of the page.

Weglot’s developer documentation describes translated URLs and content being delivered by the service while the corresponding translated pages do not appear as separate pages in the WordPress dashboard. This keeps your normal WordPress editing workflow focused on the original content, but it also means you should not expect to find a second page tree for each language.

A September 2026 Weglot guide calls the current service “Weglot 2.0” and describes AI translation, language subdirectories, hreflang tags, and translated metadata. Those are Weglot’s product descriptions; they should not be read as an independent guarantee of translation quality or search-ranking results. You still need to review important translated pages and confirm that your site’s SEO configuration behaves as intended.

Prepare the information you need
Have these items ready before opening the WordPress installer:

Also estimate the amount of text that will be translated. Weglot counts total unique translated words across languages, not simply the number of pages. A site with several target languages can therefore use its allowance faster than a site with one target language even when both contain the same original text.
Step 1: Create a Weglot project and obtain the API key
- Open Weglot and create a project for the WordPress website.
- Choose the WordPress integration when Weglot asks how the site will be connected.
- Finish project creation and copy the API key that Weglot makes available.
Keep the key available while you configure WordPress. The key connects this specific WordPress installation to the project you just created, so check that you are using the project for the correct domain before proceeding.
Step 2: Install and activate the WordPress plugin
- Sign in to the WordPress administrator area.
- Go to Plugins > Add New.
- Search for Weglot.
- Install the Weglot plugin, then select Activate.
Activation adds a Weglot section to the WordPress dashboard. If the search result does not appear, check the spelling, confirm that you are installing the official Weglot plugin, and make sure your administrator account is allowed to install plugins.
Step 3: Connect WordPress to Weglot
Open the new Weglot tab in the WordPress dashboard. The initial configuration asks for three values:

- Paste the API key from the Weglot project.
- Select the site’s original language—the language used to write the existing content.
- Select one or more destination languages—the languages into which that content should be translated.
Save the settings after entering all three values. The basic connection is complete when the plugin accepts the key and the selected language settings without an authentication error.
Use the correct original language
The original-language choice is not the language you hope to add. It must describe the language of the site’s existing pages, posts, navigation labels, and other source text. Choosing the wrong source language can produce incorrect translation behavior because Weglot will interpret the original content as another language.

Every destination language adds another translated version for visitors and contributes to the project’s translated-word usage. Start with the languages you can check and support, then add more after confirming that the first version works correctly.
Step 4: Verify a translated page on the public site
- Open the public website in a new browser tab or a private window.
- Find the Weglot language switcher.
- Select one of the destination languages.
- Open more than one page, including a page with navigation, buttons, and longer body text.
- Switch back to the original language and confirm that the source version still loads normally.
Weglot’s developer documentation describes language-specific URLs for translated content. Test a few of those URLs directly, refresh them, and use the site’s menus to move between pages. This catches problems that are not visible when you test only the home page.
Do not look for newly generated translated pages in Pages or Posts in WordPress. According to Weglot’s documentation, those language versions are delivered by the service and are not created as corresponding translated entries in the WordPress backend.

What to inspect during verification
- Headings, paragraphs, labels, and calls to action are translated in the selected language.
- Navigation remains usable after the language change.
- Links continue to lead to the appropriate language version or to an intentionally shared resource.
- Forms, buttons, cookie notices, and footer text do not remain unexpectedly in the original language.
- Refreshing a translated URL does not send the visitor back to the original-language page.
Step 5: Add the language switcher where visitors can find it
The switcher is the control visitors use to change languages. Weglot documents several placement methods; the two WordPress paths below are the most direct starting points.

Place it in a WordPress menu
- In WordPress, go to Appearance > Menus.
- Select the menu that should contain the language control.
- Choose Weglot Switcher from the available menu items.
- Select Add to Menu.
- Drag the switcher to the desired position in the menu.
- Select Save Menu.
Open the public site at desktop and mobile widths after saving. A menu location that works on a wide screen can become crowded on a phone, especially when the switcher displays a language name rather than a short code.
Place it in a widget area
If your theme exposes widget areas, use the widget placement option documented by Weglot. Choose the relevant sidebar, header, footer, or other available area, add the Weglot switcher, and save the widget arrangement. Then check a page that actually displays that area; some themes hide sidebars or footers on particular templates.
Choose a location that remains visible
A switcher hidden only on the home page is difficult for visitors to discover. Prefer a persistent navigation or header location, or a widget area that appears across the templates where language choice matters. Avoid adding multiple switchers unless a specific layout requires it, because duplicate controls can confuse users and complicate responsive styling.
Understand URLs, slugs, and search-related features
Language-specific URLs
Weglot supplies language-specific URLs for translated content. Use those URLs when testing links, browser refreshes, and sharing behavior. The exact URL structure depends on the configuration and language, so test a representative page rather than assuming every site uses the same pattern.

Translated URL slugs
Weglot’s support documentation states that translating URL slugs requires a Pro plan or higher and a supported server-side integration such as WordPress. Do not assume that translating the page text automatically translates the slug on the free plan or on every paid plan. If translated slugs are important to your navigation or search strategy, confirm the requirement in your account before upgrading or publishing links.
Hreflang and translated metadata
The Weglot 2.0 guide describes hreflang tags and translated metadata as features of the service. Treat them as configuration elements to inspect, not as proof that a site will rank in every language. Review page titles, descriptions, canonical behavior, and indexing controls with the SEO tools already used on your site, and check the rendered source of representative language URLs when your SEO workflow requires that level of validation.

The listed free plan allows 2,000 translated words and one translated language. Weglot defines the word allowance as total unique translated words across languages, and says the allowance is fixed rather than renewing. That makes the free limit suitable for a small test or a small site, but it can be exhausted by a larger site or by adding additional destination languages.
Plan names, limits, and prices can change. The pricing information reviewed for this guide also showed several paid tiers, but the dollar amounts are volatile and should be checked on Weglot’s current pricing page before you choose a subscription. Do not budget from an old screenshot or assume that a displayed USD amount is permanent: Weglot says USD figures are estimates based on the EUR/USD exchange rate at subscription.
Estimate usage before switching on every page
- Count the unique words in reusable navigation, headers, footers, templates, and core pages.
- Include text that appears in forms, notices, product or service descriptions, and other shared components.
- Multiply the expected translated text by the number of destination languages when planning capacity.
- Leave room for future pages instead of consuming the entire allowance during the initial test.
The exact accounting of a particular site’s content is best confirmed in the Weglot account. The important distinction is that the limit is based on unique translated words across languages, not a monthly reset.
Troubleshoot common setup problems
The API key is rejected in the US dashboard
Weglot’s setup guide gives a conditional instruction for users of its US environment at dashboard.weglot.us. If that environment produces an API-key error, add the following definition to wp-config.php:
define( 'WEGLOT_ENV', 'env_us' );Place the definition in the WordPress configuration where other constants are defined, before the line that says WordPress has stopped editing. This is not a universal requirement: use it only when you are working with the US dashboard environment and following Weglot’s troubleshooting guidance. If the error remains, Weglot directs users to its support team rather than recommending repeated key changes.
The switcher does not appear
- Confirm that the Weglot plugin is active.
- Confirm that the API key, original language, and destination language were saved in the Weglot dashboard tab.
- Check that the switcher was added to the menu or widget area actually used by the visible theme template.
- Clear any page, server, or browser cache and test in a private window.
- Inspect a page at both desktop and mobile widths; responsive theme rules can hide a menu item or widget.
The page changes language but some text does not
Check shared elements first: navigation, footer text, forms, buttons, and notices can be rendered differently from the main post content. Record the exact page and element that remains in the original language, then check it again after a fresh load. If the problem persists, use Weglot’s support resources with the URL and the language pair involved rather than creating duplicate WordPress pages.
A translated URL redirects or fails on refresh
Test the URL in a private window and verify the original and destination language settings. Check whether a caching, redirect, security, or URL-rewrite layer is changing the request before it reaches WordPress. Because Weglot serves translated versions through language-specific URLs without adding backend page entries, a redirect that assumes every language has a separate WordPress page can interfere with the translated request.
The slug remains in the original language
That may be expected if the account is below the Pro tier or the integration does not support server-side slug translation. Confirm the plan and integration requirement in Weglot’s current URL-slug documentation before treating it as a malfunction.
Run a launch check before advertising the translated site
- Open the home page and at least two interior pages in every destination language.
- Use the switcher from both a desktop and a mobile layout.
- Refresh a translated URL and open it directly in a private window.
- Submit or safely exercise important forms without sending test data to real recipients.
- Check menus, footer links, buttons, notices, and other repeated interface text.
- Confirm that the chosen plan still covers the project’s unique translated-word total and destination-language count.
- Review translated titles, descriptions, hreflang output, and indexing behavior if search visibility is part of the launch.
- Document which language is the original source so future editors do not reverse the language settings.
Once these checks pass, the WordPress connection, public language URLs, and visitor-facing switcher are ready for normal use. Continue to recheck plan limits and feature requirements when adding languages, translating slugs, or substantially expanding the site.
