To set up UPI, register in a participating UPI app using the mobile number linked to your bank account, select the account the app finds, and create a UPI PIN in the app. Keep that PIN secret. If a payment gets stuck or fails, check its status in transaction history before trying again; the right next step depends on whether it is pending, failed after a debit, or marked successful.
How do I set up UPI?
- Choose a participating UPI app. Consider whether it supports your bank, is accessible and available in a language you can use comfortably, and makes transaction history and complaint tools easy to find. No single app is established as safest for every user.
- Register with the mobile number linked to your bank account. Verify that number in the app’s setup flow. NPCI says the number verified in the UPI app must match the number registered with the bank for the account to be fetched. See NPCI’s UPI FAQs.
- Select your bank account and create a UPI PIN. Follow the app’s instructions. NPCI describes the UPI PIN as distinct from a bank MPIN and says PIN creation or reset may use debit-card details; the exact flow can vary by bank and app.
- Check that setup is complete. Confirm the intended bank account appears in the app and that you can view its UPI settings and transaction history.
Why is my bank account not showing in the UPI app?
First check that the SIM and mobile number verified by the app are the same number registered with your bank. If they match and the account still does not appear, contact your bank or the app’s support rather than trying to link an unrelated number.

How do I use UPI safely?
- Never disclose your UPI PIN. NPCI says, “Please do not share your UPI-PIN with anyone,” and says your bank’s customer support will never ask for it. Enter the PIN only when authorizing a payment you intend to make.
- You do not need to enter a PIN to receive money. The PIN authorizes a transaction; a request to enter it just to receive funds is a warning sign. Review what the app says you are authorizing before confirming.
- Check the recipient and amount before approving. A completed payment to the wrong recipient is not ordinarily reversed simply because the sender entered the wrong details. BHIM says NPCI cannot reverse such a completed transfer; contact your bank promptly and ask the recipient to return the money. See BHIM’s FAQs.
- If your phone is lost, act quickly. Contact your bank and arrange to block the mobile number or SIM through your carrier’s process. NPCI also advises contacting bank support.
UPI payment pending—should I pay again?
Not immediately. Open the transaction history and check the latest status and reference number. A pending payment can reflect a delay at the beneficiary bank, so an immediate retry could create a duplicate payment if the first one later completes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsNPCI’s UPI FAQ describes a 48-hour window in which a pending amount may reach the beneficiary once the beneficiary bank completes daily settlements. Treat that as NPCI’s published guidance, not a guarantee for every bank, app, or transaction. If the status remains unclear, use the transaction’s help option or contact your bank before paying again.
UPI failed but amount debited—how do I get a refund?
- Save the details. Note the transaction/reference ID, amount, date and time, recipient or merchant details, and the status shown in the app.
- Report the transaction in the app. Open it from transaction history and choose the report, help, or complaint option if available. BHIM says declined transactions can be reported from their transaction details.
- Track the reversal and contact your bank if needed. NPCI says declined transactions should be reversed and advises contacting the bank if a refund does not happen immediately. BHIM’s FAQ gives a T+3-days expectation for its failed-transaction flow. These are differently worded instructions from different sources, not one universal refund deadline; the applicable timing depends on the transaction and the bank or app.
The Reserve Bank of India’s framework sets turnaround and applicable compensation rules by transaction category. Its published framework states an effective date of October 15, 2019, but the correct deadline and compensation depend on the category and current applicable rule. Ask your bank which category applies rather than assuming one deadline fits every UPI failure. See the RBI failed-transaction turnaround framework and its framework publication.
The app says successful, but the recipient says unpaid
Check the recipient details and transaction reference in your history, then contact your app or bank for confirmation before sending another payment. BHIM advises checking the entered details and contacting support or raising an in-app complaint. A successful transaction is different from a declined payment awaiting reversal; do not treat a routine failed-payment report as a way to undo a completed transfer.

Wrong recipient or suspected UPI fraud: what should I do?
Contact your bank promptly and report suspected fraud through its official support channel. NPCI’s UPI Help guidance directs suspected fraudulent-transaction complaints to the bank. If you sent money to the wrong recipient, give the bank the transaction reference and details; a completed, authorized transfer may require the recipient to return the funds and is not automatically reversed by NPCI just because the details were wrong.

How do I complain about a UPI transaction?
- Open the transaction in the UPI app’s history. Choose its report or help option and describe the issue accurately—pending, failed after debit, successful but disputed, or suspected fraud.
- Keep the complaint reference. Save the complaint or ticket number along with the transaction ID and use the app or bank channel to track progress.
- Escalate to your bank when the app cannot resolve it. Ask which turnaround and compensation category applies if a failed transaction remains unresolved. NPCI’s UPI Help Guidelines show an eligible failed merchant-payment complaint flow; available options can differ by app and transaction type.
