Set up the Pixel 5’s rear fingerprint sensor
- Open Settings > Security & privacy > Device unlock > Fingerprint. Labels may vary slightly by Android release or language. Google’s instructions group the Pixel 5 with the Pixel 5a and earlier phones. Google’s Pixel fingerprint setup instructions
- If prompted, create a backup screen lock: a PIN, pattern, or password. Follow the on-screen steps to continue.
- When prompted to scan, touch the sensor on the back of the Pixel 5. Hold the phone as you normally would, with the screen facing you, and follow the prompts until setup completes. The Pixel 5’s sensor is on the rear, not beneath the display.
Fix a fingerprint that the Pixel 5 rejects
Confirm the finger and placement
Use a finger that is registered on the phone and place it on the rear sensor. If you are enrolling again, follow the phone’s prompts rather than tapping the sensor or trying instructions intended for newer phones with under-display sensors.

Clean the finger and sensor
Make sure your finger is clean and dry, and check that the rear sensor is uncovered and clean. Google says you can clean a fingerprint sensor with a lens wipe or a soft, clean cloth. Google’s fingerprint troubleshooting guidance

Enter your PIN, pattern, or password if Android requests it. Fingerprint unlock is not always available, including after a restart or after a fingerprint has gone unrecognized several times. Keep the backup method usable even when fingerprint unlock usually works.

Remove and enroll the fingerprint again
If Fingerprint settings are available, authenticate with your backup screen lock if requested, remove the problematic fingerprint entry, then add it again by following the prompts. This can address a rejected enrolled print; Google’s published guidance does not give a Pixel 5-specific procedure for diagnosing a sensor that never detects contact.
Know when to contact support
There are two different failure patterns:
- The sensor detects your finger but rejects it: check the enrolled finger and placement, clean and dry the finger and sensor, then try re-enrollment if settings allow.
- The sensor does not detect contact, or enrollment cannot be completed: the cited Google guidance does not diagnose the cause. If the basic checks do not help, contact Google support for continued fingerprint problems. An unresponsive sensor is not, by itself, proof of a particular hardware fault.
Google’s troubleshooting page includes separate advice for Pixel 6 and later under-display sensors. That guidance about pressing on the display or screen protectors does not apply to the Pixel 5’s rear sensor.

Fingerprint security and the backup lock
Google says fingerprint data is stored securely and “never leaves your phone.” It says the data is not shared with Google or apps; apps are told only whether a fingerprint was verified. Google also cautions that fingerprint unlock may be less secure than a strong PIN, pattern, or password. Google’s explanation of fingerprint security
