To use the Amazon Alexa Tablet 12 Pro as an e-reader, open its included Kindle app, sign in with the Amazon account that has your books, download a title from Library, and open it. Amazon says opening a Kindle book activates a reading environment that silences notifications and reduces blue light. The 12 Pro is still a color-screen tablet, not an E Ink Kindle.
Before you start
“Amazon Alexa Tablet Pro” refers to the Amazon Alexa Tablet 12 Pro, the full model name. It runs Android and includes the Kindle app, so you do not need a separate Kindle device or app installation to begin reading. You do need an internet connection for initial setup and to download books.

Amazon announced the 12 Pro on October 9, 2026. It has a 12-inch, 280 PPI display, a 120Hz refresh rate, and a 3:2 aspect ratio. Those are manufacturer specifications. The tablet is available with a standard display or an optional anti-glare Nanomatte display; Amazon describes Nanomatte as designed to reduce glare while preserving detail and color accuracy. It remains a color display rather than E Ink.
Set up Kindle and download a book
- Finish the tablet’s initial setup. Connect the tablet and complete the on-device setup. The exact first-boot screens may vary, so follow the prompts shown on your device.
- Open Kindle. Find and launch the built-in Kindle app.
- Sign in to the right Amazon account. Use the account that owns the books or has access to the Kindle library you want. Amazon’s Kindle app guide says your library appears on the Library tab after sign-in.
- Download a title. In Kindle, open Library and select a book to download it to the tablet. Once downloaded, the title is available locally for reading.
- Open the book. Amazon says opening a Kindle book activates the 12 Pro’s Kindle reading environment, which silences notifications and reduces blue light.
If your screen or menu names differ, use the current on-device help; Amazon’s general Kindle app instructions are not a model-specific guide to every 12 Pro screen.

Adjust the reading experience
Change text and page layout
While a book is open, tap near the top of the screen to show the reading controls. Tap Aa to adjust font style and size, page color, and text layout density. The Kindle app also supports continuous scrolling.
Choose a reading theme
The 12 Pro advertises reading themes for warm natural color, a softened paper tone, and grayscale. These change the look of the color display; they do not turn it into an E Ink screen.

Annotate with the optional Pro Pen
The Pro Pen is optional, not necessary for reading. On the 12 Pro, Amazon says it can be used to highlight, underline, write notes, and mark up pages. Amazon also says annotations sync across Kindle apps and Kindle Scribe on pen-supported devices. Check the current local listing for accessory price and folio compatibility before buying accessories.

Do not assume that Alexa+ can read a Kindle book through Assistive Reader: Amazon’s Alexa app help page explicitly states, “Kindle Assistive Reader isn’t available on Alexa+.” Amazon separately describes Assistive Reader support in Kindle apps on Android and Fire tablets, but supported content and platform eligibility can vary. That Kindle app capability is distinct from Alexa+ support. Check the app’s current accessibility controls and Amazon’s help for the title and device you use.

What to expect from the 12 Pro as an e-reader
- Display: It is a color tablet with a Kindle reading environment, not a dedicated E Ink reader. The optional Nanomatte finish is described by Amazon as anti-glare; no independent display test is cited here.
- Distractions: Amazon says the reading environment silences notifications and reduces blue light when a Kindle book is opened.
- Battery: Amazon advertises up to 20 hours of reading in the Kindle environment. This is the manufacturer’s claim, not an independent battery-test result.
- Versatility: In addition to Kindle books, it is an Android tablet; Amazon says Kindle books can also be read in Kindle apps on phones, tablets, and computers.
For a reader who wants to annotate books by hand, the 12 Pro’s optional pen support may matter. For someone choosing a device chiefly for reading, compare the color-screen experience, size, glare behavior, battery evidence, and price with the priorities of a dedicated e-reader rather than assuming the two display types behave alike.

At the October 9, 2026 announcement, Amazon listed U.S. starting prices of $499.99 for the standard Alexa Tablet 12 Pro and $549.99 for the Nanomatte option. The announced entry configuration has 8GB RAM and 128GB storage. Amazon said the tablets would be available for purchase October 9 and ship October 14, 2026, in the United States, Mexico, and Canada; shipping was announced to begin October 19 in the UK, Germany, France, Italy, and Spain. These are launch details, not a guarantee of current local price or stock, so check Amazon’s listing for your region.
