To show alerts and widgets during a YouTube Live broadcast, create or host them with an overlay provider, then add the provider’s overlay URL to OBS as a Browser source. YouTube is the destination, OBS is the broadcast canvas, and the provider supplies the visual elements. You do not need an OBS plugin for this basic setup.
1. Check that your channel can go live
YouTube’s current live-streaming eligibility guidance says a channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. It also sets the minimum creator age at 16. If Live Control Room does not let you start a stream, resolve the channel’s YouTube-side eligibility issue before configuring an overlay.

2. Choose an encoder workflow and an overlay provider
YouTube supports mobile, webcam, encoder, and console streaming. For a production scene with overlays, an encoder such as OBS is the relevant workflow; YouTube describes encoders as commonly used when creators need overlays and production equipment. See YouTube’s overview of live-streaming options.

OBS does not create alerts itself. An alert provider hosts or generates the overlay, and OBS displays it as a Browser source. OBS’s alerts and chat box tutorial names Streamlabs and StreamElements as examples, not as the only options. Choose based on whether the provider supports the events you want to display on YouTube, offers the widgets you need, and makes it practical to customize and test alerts.

3. Build and configure the overlay
Create the overlay canvas
For the StreamElements example, open the Overlays area, create a new overlay, and choose a canvas resolution. Matching the stream canvas makes placement straightforward. Choosing a smaller canvas can make repositioning easier in OBS. StreamElements documents these choices in Getting Started with Overlays.
Add alerts and other widgets
In the overlay editor, add an AlertBox or Custom Widget and configure the events and appearance you want. An overlay can bundle multiple elements—such as alerts, chat, labels, goals, and custom widgets—into one page rendered by a single Browser source. See StreamElements’ Overlays documentation.
StreamElements also documents a YouTube setup using its SE.Live add-on: connect your YouTube account, choose a YouTube theme, configure AlertBox settings, and copy the overlay URL. That particular tutorial specifies OBS v31.x or newer for the SE.Live workflow it describes; this is not a general minimum requirement for OBS Browser sources. Follow the SE.Live YouTube tutorial if you choose that add-on. The standard Browser-source method does not require a plugin.

4. Add the overlay to OBS
-
Open OBS and select the scene where the alerts or widgets should appear.
-
In the Sources panel, choose +, then select Browser. Create a new source and give it a recognizable name, such as “YouTube alerts.”
-
Paste the overlay provider’s URL into the URL field. Set the source width and height to fit the overlay canvas and your stream layout. For a 1080p canvas, 1920 × 1080 is one documented StreamElements example, not a universal requirement.

Position and resize the source in the preview as needed. Make sure it is above any background layer that would cover it, while keeping it below elements that should appear in front.

Check the source’s visibility icon and confirm you have added it to the scene used for the broadcast. If you use several scenes, add the source to each scene where it should appear, or use an existing shared scene structure.
5. Test the display before going live
Use the provider’s test-alert feature if it offers one. In the OBS preview, confirm the Browser source loads, is in the intended scene, fits the canvas, and is not hidden behind another layer. Check the provider’s alert state as well as OBS: an alert that is muted or paused upstream will not appear just because its Browser source is visible.

Check whether the provider’s activity-feed alerts are muted or paused. StreamElements lists these checks in its overlay troubleshooting guide.
The overlay stutters or renders incorrectly
First verify the overlay URL and resolution. If the problem persists, StreamElements suggests trying the OBS Browser Source hardware-acceleration setting. Change that setting as a troubleshooting step, then check the source again in the preview; restore the prior setting if the change does not help.
7. Keep YouTube live chat and monetization in perspective
The chat widget rendered in an OBS overlay is part of your broadcast scene. It is distinct from YouTube’s watch-page Live Chat; YouTube says Live Chat is available on watch pages, not embedded players. The scene overlay gives viewers seeing the video a visual element within the broadcast, while YouTube’s chat remains a platform feature. See YouTube’s live-streaming guidance.
Super Chat, Super Stickers, channel memberships, and ads are separate YouTube monetization features with eligibility and channel-setting requirements. They are not prerequisites for displaying alerts or widgets. Check YouTube’s live-stream monetization guidance for availability details. Search queries readers may use include “How do I add alerts to my stream?” and “How do I add chat to my livestreams using OBS?”—the underlying setup is still provider, overlay URL, OBS scene, and Browser source.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuous YouTube stream of uploaded videos rather than a camera-based live production, StreamNeo is a separate option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It keeps the uploaded video playing from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the video as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; there are no quality tiers. If YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo automatically recovers it. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams of uploaded videos, not camera input. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
