For non-VR games, Steam Frame Controllers use Steam Input whether you play locally or stream. You can configure a layout for an individual game through Steam’s controller configuration, though Valve’s general desktop and Big Picture instructions are not confirmed as the exact menu path on the Steam Frame headset. VR games use SteamVR controller bindings instead.
First, check whether the game is VR or non-VR
Valve says Steam Frame Controllers take full advantage of Steam Input when playing non-VR titles locally or via streaming. The game may receive the controller as a generic gamepad or as keyboard-and-mouse input, depending on the bindings. That is why the suitable layout can vary from game to game. Valve’s Steam Frame Input documentation describes this behavior.

VR titles follow a different path: SteamVR uses controller bindings, with compatibility fallbacks when a Frame Controller binding is unavailable.
Open a non-VR game’s controller configuration
Valve’s general Steam Input player guide gives these routes. Its interface examples are generic and may not match current Steam Frame menus.

In the Steam desktop client
- Connect the Steam Frame Controller.
- Open Steam > Settings > Controller to inspect the controller settings.
- Choose the game in your library, right-click it, and select Edit Steam Controller Configuration.
In Big Picture mode
- Open the game’s menu.
- Choose Manage Game > Controller Configuration.
These are general Steam Input directions, not verified instructions for navigating the Frame headset interface. Valve’s Steam Frame Support page links to Frame-specific setup and troubleshooting material, but its linked instructions are not established here. Do not assume the desktop or Big Picture labels appear unchanged in the headset.
Understand the two controller-binding systems
| Game type | Binding system | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Non-VR, local or streamed | Steam Input | Depending on the configured bindings, the game may see a generic gamepad or keyboard-and-mouse input. |
| VR | SteamVR controller bindings | SteamVR uses a Frame Controller binding by default. If one is unavailable, Valve documents OpenXR Generic Controller first, then Oculus Touch, with remapping to the Frame Controller layout. |
The VR fallback sequence is documented in Valve’s Steam Frame Input documentation. It is separate from choosing a Steam Input layout for a non-VR game.

If a layout does not work
Check whether the game supports the input style selected in its layout and whether the Steam Overlay is enabled. These are general Steam Controller troubleshooting checks, not a Steam Frame-specific guarantee; Valve’s troubleshooting page concerns the 2015 Steam Controller. Valve’s Steam Controller configuration troubleshooting guide covers those checks.
