To connect a phone, laptop, TV, or other device, join your Starlink router’s Wi-Fi, set a network name and password in the Starlink app, then reconnect your devices to that network. For the documented Router 3 setup, the initial network is STARLINK; it has no password until you set one, so secure it as part of setup. Instructions and Ethernet options vary by Starlink kit and router generation.
Set up Starlink Wi-Fi and connect your devices
- Connect and power the kit. Follow the setup instructions for your specific Starlink kit and router. Cable paths differ between kits, so do not assume that another model’s wiring applies.
- Join the router’s Wi-Fi. On your phone or other device, open its Wi-Fi settings and select
STARLINKfor the documented Router 3 Standard setup. The default network may be named differently on other hardware or if it has already been configured. Starlink’s Router 3 setup guide - Set a network name and password. Open the Starlink app and go to Settings > Router. Enter the desired Wi-Fi name (SSID) and password, then save. Starlink says the default network is initially unprotected, so set a password rather than leaving it open. Starlink’s Router 3 setup guide
- Reconnect your devices. In each device’s Wi-Fi settings, select the new network name and enter the password you chose. Repeat this on phones, computers, TVs, and smart-home devices that used the previous network.
- Check the app. Use the Starlink app to review the system and adjust router settings. Starlink says there is no separate router administrator portal. Starlink’s admin portal information
Choose wired or wireless connections for your hardware
Phones and most laptops can connect over Wi-Fi. A TV, desktop computer, or other device can also use Ethernet if your router and kit provide a wired connection. Check the router model before buying an adapter or changing the cable setup.

| Hardware | Wired connection information |
|---|---|
| Router 3 | Two LAN Ethernet ports are located under the rear cover. Starlink Ethernet-port information |
| Gen 2 Router | No built-in Ethernet port; Starlink says its Ethernet Adapter can add wired connectivity. Starlink Ethernet-port information |
| Third-party router | Ethernet is required, but the connection path depends on the kit. Starlink’s Standard Actuated setup uses an Ethernet Adapter; other kits may provide Ethernet through the power supply or use a different arrangement. Verify your kit before purchasing parts. Decide whether to use Starlink Wi-Fi or another router
For ordinary device connections, use the Starlink router’s Wi-Fi and keep at least one network in Default mode. Starlink describes Default as the normal mode for shared access between local devices. A third-party router is an alternative when you want that router to manage Wi-Fi; it requires the kit-specific Ethernet connection described above. Starlink network-mode information
To hand Wi-Fi management to a third-party router, Starlink’s Bypass mode disables Starlink router Wi-Fi. This is not needed just to connect devices to Starlink Wi-Fi. For the listed router types, Starlink says leaving bypass mode requires a factory reset, so check the instructions for your hardware before enabling it. - 🔌 Advanced Connectivity: Supports both wired (Ethernet) and wireless setup to expand your Starlink mesh network seamlessly.
- 🧩 Easy Integration: Works with your existing Starlink system (excluding Gen 1); ideal for adding extra mesh nodes.
- 🛠️ Versatile Installation: Mount on the wall or place on a table. Includes power supply, mounting stand, screws, and drywall anchors.
- 📶 Optimized Performance: Best placed within two rooms of the main router; avoid obstructions like concrete walls and metal appliances.
- 📱 Mesh Compatibility: Compatible with Starlink Gen 2 Router, Starlink Gen 3 Router, Starlink Mini Router, and Starlink Mini Kit. Not compatible for wireless mesh networking with Starlink Gen 1 routers or third-party mesh systems.
Choose a network mode only if it fits your use
| Mode | What it does | When it may fit |
|---|---|---|
| Default | Allows connected devices to see and communicate with one another. Every router must retain at least one Default network. | Everyday use where household devices need local access to each other. |
| Guest | Isolates connected guest devices from one another and prevents them from accessing the Starlink app. | Providing guest access with those restrictions. |
| Auto | Intended for mobile installations: it turns Wi-Fi off if internet access has been absent for more than a minute and restores it after connectivity returns. | A mobile setup where this automatic Wi-Fi behavior is useful. |
These mode behaviors are described by Starlink; check the live app for the options available on your router. Starlink network-mode information
Troubleshoot a Starlink connection
Device cannot join Wi-Fi
- Confirm the device is selecting the current network name, not an old saved network.
- Re-enter the password set in the Starlink app. If the app shows a different network name or password than expected, use the current values shown there.
- Check that the router is powered and that its cables are firmly connected and undamaged.
Wi-Fi connects, but there is no internet
For Router 3, Starlink lists flashing white as trying to connect, solid white as connected to the internet, no light as no power, red as not connected, and violet as bypass mode. A solid white light turns off after an hour, so a dark indicator after that period alone does not establish a fault. Indicator meanings may differ on other router models. - DUAL BAND TECHNOLOGY: Features 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands for optimal performance, ensuring smooth streaming, gaming, and video calls without interference
- COMPACT DESIGN: Travel-friendly size makes it perfect for portable use while maintaining full router functionality and reliable connectivity
- UNIVERSAL COMPATIBILITY: Works seamlessly with both Starlink systems and standard Internet Service Providers for flexible deployment options
- MESH NETWORK READY: Supports mesh network expansion capabilities, allowing you to extend coverage throughout your space as needed
- QUICK SETUP: Plug-and-play installation gets you connected rapidly, with intuitive configuration for both home and office environments
Starlink’s basic troubleshooting sequence is to check app alerts, outages, and obstructions; confirm the cables are secure and undamaged; power-cycle the router; and factory-reset if needed. Contact Starlink support if those steps do not resolve the problem. Follow the instructions for your hardware before resetting, since a reset can require you to configure the network again. When mesh Wi-Fi may help
If you need to expand coverage, mesh may be an option, but compatibility and placement depend on the models involved. Starlink’s Router 3 guide documents pairing Router 3 as a mesh node with Gen 2: the system should already be online, then use the app’s PAIR NEW MESH NODE prompt and confirm the node appears on the Network screen.
