To secure a WooCommerce store, install and activate a TLS certificate for the exact domain at your host, web server, or TLS-terminating proxy first. Confirm that HTTPS answers on port 443, then change both WordPress URL fields to https://, redirect HTTP traffic, repair any hard-coded HTTP assets, and test the complete shopping and administration flow. Changing WordPress URLs before the server is ready can lock you out or produce errors.
Antihost offers managed WordPress hosting with free migration, one-click staging and a 14-day free trial.
This guide covers managed hosting, Apache or Nginx servers, CDNs and reverse proxies, mixed-content repairs, checkout testing, and the most common redirect and certificate failures. HTTPS is essential for protecting sessions and is expected by many payment integrations, but a certificate by itself is not PCI compliance.

What SSL does for a WooCommerce store
“SSL” is the familiar name for the certificate-based encryption now provided by TLS. When a shopper visits an https:// URL, the browser verifies the certificate for that hostname and negotiates an encrypted connection. That protects login cookies, account details, checkout data and administrative sessions while they travel between the browser and the HTTPS endpoint.
WordPress describes itself as fully compatible with HTTPS when a TLS/SSL certificate is installed and available for the web server: WordPress HTTPS guidance. HTTPS also helps satisfy the baseline security requirements of integrated payment gateways. It does not, however, make the entire store PCI-compliant; WooCommerce explicitly states that “SSL alone does not make your site PCI-compliant” in its SSL FAQ.

Prepare before changing any URLs
Back up and map the architecture
Create a restorable database and file backup, and record the current working URL before making changes. Write down:
- The canonical hostname, such as
example.com, and whetherwww.example.comis also configured. - The hosting control panel or managed host that owns DNS, certificates and web-server settings.
- Whether a CDN, load balancer or reverse proxy sits in front of WordPress and where TLS is terminated.
- Whether the origin uses Apache, Nginx or a host-managed web stack.
- How you can reach hosting support or a control-panel recovery console if WordPress becomes inaccessible.
Do not start by editing the WordPress URL fields. The certificate and the HTTPS listener must work independently first.

The certificate must cover the exact hostname shoppers use. If the store is reached at both the bare domain and a www variant, either include both names in the certificate or redirect one hostname only after both DNS records and certificate coverage are correct. A certificate for a different subdomain will still produce a browser name-mismatch error.
Choose an implementation route
Your route determines who installs the certificate, renews it and handles port 443. The following options use the comparison points that matter most to WooCommerce stores.
| Route | Certificate installation and renewal | Port 443 and virtual host control | Proxy/CDN behavior | Migration and support considerations | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Managed WooCommerce host | Host usually installs and renews it; confirm whether this is automatic. | Host configures the listener and virtual host. | Ask whether the host or CDN terminates TLS and passes the original protocol. | Lowest operational risk when the host provides staging, rollback and support. | Included or priced as part of hosting; No universal amount is established here. |
| Let’s Encrypt on a supported host | WooCommerce identifies Let’s Encrypt as free and available on some hosts with one-click installation; renewal behavior depends on the host. | You or the host must configure the certificate on the correct HTTPS virtual host and port 443. | Configure the CDN or proxy separately if it terminates TLS. | Low certificate cost, but misconfigured renewal or virtual hosts can interrupt service. | Certificate is free where supported; hosting and administration still have their normal costs. |
| Paid certificate from a certificate vendor | You, the host or an administrator installs it; verify the renewal process and expiration alerts. | Requires correct port-443 and virtual-host configuration at the origin or TLS terminator. | Upload or select the certificate in the proxy/CDN as well when it terminates TLS. | May include vendor validation or support, but does not remove the need for correct WordPress and proxy settings. | Recurring price varies by certificate and vendor; no single price is established here. |
| CDN or reverse-proxy termination | The proxy may issue or manage the public certificate while the origin has its own TLS configuration. | Public port 443 belongs to the proxy; the origin still needs the protocol and port arrangement required by the provider. | Must pass the original HTTPS protocol, commonly through HTTP_X_FORWARDED_PROTO. |
Can improve operational flexibility, but incorrect headers commonly cause redirect loops or admin failures. | Depends on the proxy plan and origin hosting; verify current regional terms. |
WooCommerce’s certificate guidance lists Let’s Encrypt as a free option on some hosts and describes paid certificates as another route: WooCommerce SSL FAQ. Select one party to own renewal and document where the certificate is installed.
Install the certificate and make HTTPS answer on port 443
Use your host’s certificate workflow
In a managed control panel, select the exact store domain, request or import the certificate, and enable it for the site’s HTTPS service. A one-click Let’s Encrypt option is appropriate only when the host confirms that it covers the domain and renews automatically. For a paid certificate, install the server certificate and any required intermediate chain exactly as the vendor and host specify.

Configure Apache or Nginx deliberately
On a self-managed server, the certificate belongs on the HTTPS virtual host for the store, not merely in a file on disk. The virtual host must listen on port 443, present the certificate and private key for the requested hostname, and serve the same WordPress installation as the HTTP host. Nginx and Apache use different directives, so use the syntax documented for your installed version and distribution rather than copying a configuration intended for another server.
WooCommerce’s troubleshooting page says that ssl_error_rx_record_too_long commonly indicates that HTTPS is reaching a server or virtual host returning plain HTTP, that no certificate is active, or that port 443 is misconfigured. Its checks are documented at ssl_error_rx_record_too_long troubleshooting.
Verify the endpoint before touching WordPress
- Open the exact HTTPS hostname in a private browser window.
- Inspect the certificate details and confirm that the hostname, validity status and chain are accepted without a warning.
- Confirm that the response is your store, not a default server page or an unrelated virtual host.
- If the browser reports a protocol or connection error, stop here and have the host correct the certificate, listener or virtual host.
Change the two WordPress URLs
Only after HTTPS works at the server layer, update both URL settings. In the WordPress dashboard go to Settings > General and change:
- WordPress Address (URL) from
http://your-domaintohttps://your-domain. - Site Address (URL) from
http://your-domaintohttps://your-domain.
Save the changes, sign in again if prompted, and confirm that the dashboard itself loads over HTTPS. WooCommerce warns against switching these fields before the server is ready because the site can become unreachable; see its HTTPS error guidance.

Do not repeatedly toggle the fields while a proxy is still reporting the wrong protocol.
Configure reverse proxies and load balancers
A proxy can receive HTTPS from the shopper and forward ordinary HTTP to the origin. WordPress then sees an HTTP request unless the proxy communicates the original protocol and the origin translates it. That mismatch makes WordPress generate HTTP URLs or redirect an already-secure request back to HTTPS, creating mixed content or an infinite loop.

Pass and translate the forwarded protocol
Configure the proxy to send HTTP_X_FORWARDED_PROTO: https for secure public requests. WooCommerce documents a wp-config.php pattern that sets the server HTTPS flag when that forwarded value is HTTPS: WooCommerce reverse-proxy SSL snippet. WordPress explains the same class of SSL-terminating proxy redirect loop in its HTTPS administration documentation.
Use the documented pattern for your environment and place it before WordPress loads. Restrict trust to headers set by your own proxy; accepting an arbitrary client-supplied forwarded header can let a visitor spoof the protocol. Ask the proxy or host provider for the exact trusted configuration when several proxies are chained.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Keep origin and public settings consistent
Decide whether the origin should also use HTTPS between the proxy and server. Either arrangement can work when the provider supports it, but the proxy’s SSL mode, origin certificate and forwarded-protocol behavior must agree. After every change, test both the front end and /wp-admin/; some proxy configurations that appear to fix the storefront can still block administration.
Redirect every HTTP request safely
Once the HTTPS URL is canonical, redirect HTTP requests at the web server, managed host or CDN using that platform’s supported rule. A server-level redirect runs before WordPress and avoids loading the application twice. Redirect the non-canonical hostname to the chosen canonical HTTPS hostname, and test both the bare and www variants if both resolve.
Do not add several overlapping redirect plugins or rules without tracing the chain. A request should reach one final HTTPS URL, not bounce between HTTP, HTTPS, the bare domain and www. WooCommerce cautions that a blanket constant-SSL approach can interfere with caching on some sites, so measure cache behavior and verify redirects after enabling it: WooCommerce SSL FAQ.
Repair mixed content
A secure page can still show a browser warning when its HTML requests an image, stylesheet, script, font, iframe or AJAX endpoint with an http:// URL. Typical sources include old media URLs in post content, theme CSS, JavaScript settings, hard-coded template links, embedded video and external services that do not support HTTPS.

Find the insecure requests
- Open the affected page in the browser and inspect the developer console for “mixed content” messages.
- Use the page source and network panel to identify the exact URL and the template, setting or database field that produced it.
- Search theme and plugin configuration for hard-coded
http://values, excluding URLs that intentionally target a non-HTTP protocol. - Update internal asset and API URLs to the HTTPS form, or use a protocol-appropriate endpoint supplied by the external service.
- Clear page, object and browser caches, then reload in a private window to confirm that the old URL is gone.
WooCommerce notes that reverse-proxy misconfiguration can prevent WordPress from generating secure asset URLs automatically. Fix the forwarded-protocol handling before trying to rewrite every asset if the problem affects many generated links: mixed-content guidance.
Check stored content carefully
Database-wide search-and-replace can damage serialized WordPress data when performed with an unsuitable tool. Use a method that understands serialized values, make a backup first, and replace only the old site URL and known asset hostnames. Do not blindly replace every occurrence of the text “http” in plugin data.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Force secure logins and administration when appropriate
After server HTTPS and proxy detection are correct, WordPress supports forcing the login and administration area over SSL with this line in wp-config.php:
define( 'FORCE_SSL_ADMIN', true );
WordPress documents this setting in its HTTPS security guidance. Add it only when an administrator can already reach the dashboard over HTTPS and the proxy correctly sets the protocol. If the origin misreads a secure request as HTTP, the setting can produce a login redirect loop or make the dashboard inaccessible.
Test the store end to end
Certificate installation is not complete until customers, payment callbacks and administrators all use the secure canonical URL. Work through this checklist with caches enabled as they will be in production.
Browser and certificate checks
- Open the home page, a representative product, a category, search results and a page with images or embedded media.
- Inspect the certificate in the browser and confirm there is no hostname, trust or expiration warning.
- Check the developer console and network panel for mixed-content requests, blocked scripts or failed API calls.
- Visit an old HTTP URL and confirm it makes one clean redirect to the final HTTPS URL.
WooCommerce customer journeys
- Add a product to the cart, change quantity, remove an item and verify that cart fragments or blocks continue to update.
- Open checkout, enter test customer details and confirm that validation, shipping and tax requests remain functional.
- Complete a payment test in the gateway’s sandbox where available, then follow the return, cancel and webhook or callback URLs.
- Sign in, open
/my-account/, view orders and sign out. - Test coupons, guest checkout and any subscription or account-creation flow your store uses.
Administration and independent diagnostics
- Open Tools > Site Health and review the HTTPS status and any critical issues. WordPress documents the screen at Site Health Screen.
- Run the Qualys SSL Server Test against the public hostname. Review certificate-chain, protocol and configuration findings rather than treating a letter grade as the only result.
- Check scheduled jobs, webhooks, shipping callbacks and email links for old HTTP endpoints.
- Review server and proxy logs for 301/302 chains, 4xx responses, handshake failures and repeated requests to the wrong host.
Troubleshoot common failures
ssl_error_rx_record_too_long or a plain-HTTP response on HTTPS
This usually means the HTTPS hostname is reaching a service that speaks plain HTTP, the certificate is not active, or port 443 points to the wrong Apache or Nginx virtual host. Verify certificate activation, the port-443 listener and the hostname mapping with the host. Also confirm that both WordPress URL fields match the final HTTPS hostname after the server is fixed. Follow WooCommerce’s diagnostic sequence at ssl_error_rx_record_too_long.
Best Value
Infinite redirect loop
First identify every hop: browser, CDN, load balancer, web server and WordPress. If a proxy terminates TLS, verify that it passes HTTP_X_FORWARDED_PROTO and that WordPress translates the value to its HTTPS flag. Then check that the proxy’s SSL mode and origin protocol agree, and remove duplicate redirect rules. WordPress specifically warns that an SSL-terminating proxy can cause loops when this header is not handled: WordPress HTTPS guidance.
Mixed-content warning remains
Use the console to locate the remaining http:// request. Update the responsible content, theme or plugin setting, clear all caches and retest. If many generated URLs are insecure, revisit proxy headers; WooCommerce identifies proxy misconfiguration as a cause of automatic URL generation failures in its SSL FAQ.
Checkout or payment return fails
Confirm that checkout, the gateway’s hosted-payment handoff, return URL, webhook endpoint and cancellation URL all resolve over HTTPS and use the same canonical hostname. Check the gateway’s current technical requirements and logs. WooCommerce says integrated payment gateways require at least rudimentary PCI compliance, including valid HTTPS/SSL; the certificate is only one part of the compliance program. See the WooCommerce security FAQ.
Admin becomes inaccessible after a proxy change
Review the proxy’s SSL mode and forwarded-protocol settings with the host or proxy provider. Some configurations can block /wp-admin/ even when public pages appear normal. Use hosting recovery access to undo the last proxy or FORCE_SSL_ADMIN change if necessary, then correct protocol detection before re-enabling it. WooCommerce discusses this class of issue in its SSL FAQ.
Operate HTTPS after launch
Record who owns certificate renewal, where expiration alerts are delivered and which server or proxy holds the private key. Re-test the storefront after certificate renewal, DNS changes, CDN changes, host migrations and major cache or security-plugin updates. Keep a copy of the working redirect and proxy configuration with your backup documentation.
When adding a new domain, subdomain, payment integration or external asset, check certificate coverage and HTTPS support before publishing it. Review Site Health and server logs periodically, and rerun the SSL Labs test after material TLS or proxy changes. This routine catches failures that a one-time browser check can miss.
Quick Recap
Completion checklist
- Certificate covers the exact public hostname and is active at the TLS endpoint.
- Port 443 serves the correct certificate and WooCommerce site.
- Both WordPress URL fields use the final
https://address. - Proxy headers correctly tell WordPress when the visitor used HTTPS.
- HTTP and alternate-host requests make one redirect to the canonical HTTPS URL.
- No theme, plugin, media or embedded resource still loads over insecure HTTP.
- Optional
FORCE_SSL_ADMINis enabled only after proxy and server checks pass. - Product, cart, checkout, account, admin, payment-return and webhook paths have been tested.
- Site Health and SSL Labs results have been reviewed and documented.
- Renewal ownership, alerts and rollback access are recorded.
