Use Playwright Test’s toHaveScreenshot() assertion to capture representative documentation pages, compare each run with a reviewed image baseline, and run the checks in CI—ideally on pull requests. Keep the browser and operating environment consistent, control dynamic page content, and treat every baseline update as a code review decision. Visual checks catch appearance changes; they do not replace functional, accessibility, or content tests.
Choose pages and states that matter to readers
Start with a small route set that covers distinct documentation layouts, rather than taking screenshots of every URL. A useful first pass might include:

- The documentation landing page.
- A typical article.
- A long article with a table of contents, code samples, or tables.
- The navigation and sidebar in an expanded state.
- Search results for a stable query.
- A narrow viewport, where the navigation or content layout changes.
Capture a known state for each page: control fixture data, query terms, viewport size, and any required authentication. Add routes when they cover a meaningful layout or a high-risk reader journey. This is a practical selection strategy, not a route list prescribed by Playwright.
Add a Playwright visual test
Install Playwright Test in the documentation repository and configure its browser project and base URL for the environment where you will create and compare baselines. A minimal TypeScript test looks like this:
#1 Best Overall
- CRISP CLARITY: This 23.8″ Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail
- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('documentation article visual baseline', async ({ page }) => {
const baseUrl = process.env.DOCS_BASE_URL;
if (!baseUrl) throw new Error('Set DOCS_BASE_URL');
await page.goto(new URL('/getting-started', baseUrl).toString());
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('getting-started.png');
});
Set DOCS_BASE_URL to the local site or the specific preview/build target before running the test. The example route is illustrative; adapt it to your site’s paths and readiness needs. For pages that need more setup, wait for the relevant content or a known selector before taking the screenshot rather than relying on an arbitrary delay.
On an initial run, Playwright creates a reference screenshot. Later runs compare new captures against that reference and can fail when the difference exceeds the configured comparison criteria. Screenshot assertions also take repeated captures until consecutive screenshots match, which helps reduce transient rendering noise. See Playwright’s visual comparisons documentation for the assertion and configuration details.
Create and approve the first baselines
- Run the tests in the same browser and operating environment intended for CI.
- Inspect every generated image. Confirm that the route, content, viewport, and UI state are the ones the test is meant to protect.
- Commit approved image snapshots alongside the tests so future runs have a reference to compare.
For an intentional redesign, regenerate snapshots with:

npx playwright test --update-snapshots
Review the changed images before committing them. Updating a baseline records an accepted visual state; it does not establish that the change is desirable. Playwright describes snapshot storage, review, and update behavior in its snapshot documentation.

Make screenshot capture repeatable
Keep the rendering environment stable
Pixels can vary with operating system, browser version, fonts, hardware, settings, power source, and headless mode—even when the site has not changed. Generate and compare baselines with a consistent browser/runtime setup. Pin the relevant Playwright/browser environment and use the same container or CI image for baseline creation and routine checks where practical. Playwright’s CI guidance discusses container-based execution for consistent environments.
Control page state and timing
- Use stable fixture data and repeatable route state instead of live or rotating content.
- Wait for the page content that matters to finish loading. For lazy-loaded images, scroll or otherwise trigger the content if it must appear in the capture.
- Close or set menus, search, and sidebars to a known state; do not capture during hover transitions or animations.
- Mask or suppress changing timestamps and other known volatile regions. Playwright supports screenshot styling through
stylePath, which can hide content that should not affect comparison. - Set viewport and device-scale behavior deliberately, and use matching settings when generating and checking snapshots.
Fix avoidable instability before loosening comparison thresholds. A more tolerant diff can also overlook a real layout or typography regression. Playwright documents screenshot retries, comparison options, and stylesheet filtering in its visual comparison reference.
Run visual checks in CI
A common setup runs npx playwright test on pull requests, after installing the browser dependencies, and retains the Playwright HTML report as a CI artifact. That gives reviewers a place to inspect failures before merge. Playwright provides a GitHub Actions example that runs on pushes and pull requests, installs dependencies, and uploads the report.
If your CI builds a preview deployment, wait until the deployment is available and point the test at its URL. Keep baseline creation and comparison in the controlled environment you selected; do not silently generate new expected screenshots from an arbitrary runner. Retain screenshots and reports for failed runs so a reviewer can distinguish a genuine change from a rendering or readiness problem. Playwright also documents container-based and post-deployment workflows in its CI guide.

Choose local Playwright snapshots or hosted Percy review
Local snapshots are a straightforward starting point when the team wants image baselines in the repository and test failures directly from Playwright. Percy is an optional hosted workflow for screenshot comparison and visual review, including captures across browser and responsive-width configurations. It changes where diffs are reviewed; it does not remove the need to decide which changes are acceptable.
| Decision | Local Playwright snapshots | Percy hosted review |
|---|---|---|
| Where diffs are reviewed | Test output and committed snapshot files. Playwright | Percy’s build and review interface. BrowserStack Percy documentation |
| Baseline handling | Snapshot directories in the repository; update and inspect changes before committing. Playwright | Builds compare against approved baselines through the Percy workflow. BrowserStack Percy documentation and Percy Playwright integration |
| CI verdict | The screenshot assertion can fail when the comparison differs. Playwright | Visual changes go through Percy review; configure the integration’s wait or gate if unapproved changes should fail the pipeline. Percy Playwright integration |
| Coverage approach | Use the browser and platform projects you configure, and keep the rendering environment consistent. Playwright | Percy describes browser and responsive-width capture options. BrowserStack Percy documentation |
| Operational tradeoff | Your team manages snapshot files and rendering stability. | Adds vendor configuration, token handling, a hosted review flow, and service terms to evaluate. Percy Playwright integration |
The Percy Playwright integration can route toHaveScreenshot() assertions through Percy. Do not treat a passing test process alone as proof that there are no visual changes: set reviewer expectations and configure a gate if the pipeline must wait for approval. Follow the integration documentation for its current token and gate requirements. Percy is optional; verify current product behavior, costs, and availability with the vendor before adopting it.
Troubleshoot common failures
A screenshot fails although no intentional UI change was made
Check that the test used the same browser, operating environment, fonts, viewport, and device scale as the baseline run. Then look for changing content, incomplete page readiness, animations, or a different menu/search state. Stabilize those sources before changing the diff threshold.
The first run has no usable comparison
The first execution creates the reference image rather than comparing against an existing approved baseline. Inspect the generated snapshot in the intended environment and commit it only after review.

The screenshot is blank or missing content
Verify that DOCS_BASE_URL points to the expected build, the route is correct, and any required authentication or fixture setup completed. Wait for the specific content that should be visible; for lazy content, trigger loading before capture.
CI differs from a developer machine
Align the browser/runtime and operating environment used to create baselines with the CI environment. A pinned container or CI image can reduce OS and font differences. Avoid approving environment-driven baseline churn without checking the image diffs.
Percy reports changes but CI passes
Review the Percy build and approval state, then configure the documented wait/gate behavior if unapproved visual changes must block the pipeline. Confirm that the integration has the required token and permissions.
