What RustAdmin does
RustAdmin is a third-party Windows graphical interface for administering a Rust server through RCON (remote console). It is not the Rust game server itself and it does not replace your hosting panel. Your server still has to be running and reachable before RustAdmin can connect.

Once connected, RustAdmin sends console commands through Rust’s RCON service. That lets an administrator perform server-management tasks without joining the game, such as checking console output, running commands, moderating players, and changing server settings that the account is authorized to change. Treat the connection as equivalent to handing someone administrator credentials: anyone who obtains the RCON password and can reach the port may be able to control the server.
RustAdmin is described by hosting guides as a free Windows GUI. Current download and account requirements should be checked on the official site, rustadmin.com, because the guides that document the installation are several years old.

Information to collect before configuring RustAdmin
Have these values ready. Your host’s panel may label them differently, but RustAdmin needs the same information.

Do not assume that the RCON port is always the game port plus one. Published setup summaries disagree: one describes rcon.port as defaulting to the same value as server.port, while another gives a game-port-plus-one example (such as 28015 and 28016). The authoritative value for your connection is the port your panel or server configuration actually exposes.
Enable RCON on a hosted Rust server
Hosting panels place the same settings in different screens. Use the path that exists in your panel, then restart the server so the new values load.
Set the password in a configuration file
- Stop the Rust server if your panel requires it before editing files.
- Open Configuration Files (or the equivalent file editor) and open
server.cfg. - Locate the RCON password field and enter a long, unique password. Avoid leading or trailing spaces.
- Save the file.
- Start or restart the server. A restart is required for the server to load the changed credential.
Some panels generate server.cfg at startup or rewrite it when settings are saved. If your edit disappears, use the panel’s own settings form or startup-variable editor instead of repeatedly changing a generated file.

Set the password in the panel’s settings screen
- Open the server’s Settings, Startup, or similarly named configuration page.
- Find the field labeled RCON password, RCon Password, or a similar variant.
- Enter the password exactly as you intend to type it in RustAdmin and save the setting.
- Restart the server and wait for it to finish booting.
Do not copy a password with an accidental space at the end. RCON authentication is exact; a visually identical password with one extra character will fail.
Confirm the RCON port
Open the panel’s network, overview, allocation, or connection section and record the port specifically identified as RCON. If the panel assigns ports automatically, use its displayed assignment rather than calculating one from the game port. A port conflict can prevent RCON from listening, so the RCON port must be usable and must not be confused with the game port.
Some hosts expose a startup variable for rcon.port. If you change it, save the startup configuration and restart. Check the panel again after boot; the value shown there is the one to enter in RustAdmin.
Configure RCON on a self-hosted server
On a server you manage yourself, the same settings can be supplied as launch parameters or in server.cfg. The reported Facepunch configuration behavior is that server.cfg loads at startup and takes priority over command-line values. Therefore, check both places if the server appears to ignore a launch argument.

Rust’s server help text is reported to call the older Source-engine RCON mode deprecated, while WebSocket RCON is selected with rcon.web 1. Hosting instructions are not consistent about whether you must set rcon.web 1 manually: one says to enable it in startup variables, while another says WebSocket RCON is not required. If WebRcon fails, inspect your host’s documented startup variables and the values actually loaded by the server rather than changing several settings at once.
Understand the query port
The query port is separate from both game and RCON traffic. The reported default is one above the higher of server.port and rcon.port, and it cannot equal server.port. Do not enter the query port in RustAdmin’s RCON-port field. If your host assigns ports automatically, use the labels in its overview page to distinguish them.

- On a Windows computer, open rustadmin.com.
- Check the current download offered by the site and whether it requires an account. Older hosting guides disagree about account requirements, so do not rely on an old screenshot or installer link.
- Download the Windows client from the official RustAdmin site and install it using an account with permission to install desktop software.
- Launch RustAdmin after installation. If Windows displays a firewall prompt, allow the application to make outbound connections on networks you trust; do not expose an inbound RCON service merely to satisfy the desktop prompt.
RustAdmin is described as a Windows GUI. If you administer from macOS or Linux, you need a Windows environment for this particular client or a different RCON tool; the connection details in this guide still apply to the server.
Connect RustAdmin with WebRcon
Use WebRcon rather than guessing a protocol. The connection form is reported to be in RustAdmin’s Configuration tab.

- Open RustAdmin and select the Configuration tab.
- Set the connection type to WebRcon.
- Enter the server’s public IP address or hostname.
- Enter the game port in the game-port field. This is not automatically the RCON port.
- Enter the exact RCON port shown by your host or configured with
rcon.port. - Enter the exact RCON password, preserving capitalization and punctuation and removing any accidental trailing spaces.
- Click Connect.
If authentication succeeds, RustAdmin should show the server connection and allow console interaction. If the client asks for a profile or saved configuration, store the values only on a computer you control; a saved RCON password is an administrative credential.

A successful socket connection is not enough if the client is pointed at the wrong server. Verify the identity and permissions before using administrative commands.
- Confirm that the server name, player count, and other visible details match the intended instance.
- Run a harmless read-only console query, such as requesting server information, and confirm that a response appears.
- Check that console output updates when the server generates a new event.
- Test only the permissions you actually need. Do not experiment with destructive commands on a live world.
If the server appears online but commands are rejected, separate transport from authorization: a reachable port can still have an incorrect password or an RCON service running in a different mode.

Resolve port confusion methodically
- Write down the game port, RCON port, and query port separately.
- Check the panel’s current allocation after every restart; automatic assignments can change when a server is recreated.
- Check
server.cfgfor an overridingrcon.portvalue. - Confirm that the firewall rule references the RCON port, not only the game port.
- Change one variable at a time and restart before testing again.
Do not “fix” a failed connection by trying random nearby ports. The published defaults conflict, so the server’s active configuration is more reliable than a general rule.
Secure the RCON service
RCON credentials provide full server administration. A leaked password can allow commands that disrupt gameplay, remove players, alter settings, or otherwise damage the server.
- Use a long, unique password that is not reused for the hosting panel, game account, email, or operating system.
- Restrict inbound access to the RCON port to your fixed administrative IP addresses or a VPN. Avoid exposing it to the entire internet.
- Keep the server, RustAdmin client, operating system, and firewall rules updated.
- Do not paste the password into public chat, issue trackers, screenshots, or shared configuration repositories.
- Remove old administrators’ access and rotate the password when staff changes or you suspect exposure.
- Store saved RustAdmin profiles on encrypted, access-controlled computers.
- Prefer WebSocket RCON as required by your current server setup, and avoid the older Source-engine mode when your server identifies it as deprecated.
For a self-hosted server behind a router, port forwarding should target only the machine running Rust. A VPN that places administrators on a private network is safer than forwarding RCON openly. In either design, test access from an approved network and confirm that an unapproved network cannot reach the port.

Changing the password or port later
Plan a short maintenance window for credential and port changes. First update the server setting, save it, and restart. Then update RustAdmin’s saved profile with the new value. If you change the port, update the firewall or provider allocation at the same time. Test from an approved network before announcing that administration access is restored.
When retiring a server, remove its RCON firewall rule and delete saved credentials from shared administrator computers. When cloning a server, generate a new password and verify the clone’s IP, game port, RCON port, and identity before connecting.
