To get alerts about activity on Reddit, turn on the relevant options under Settings > Notifications on desktop, or open Settings > Manage notifications in the mobile app. If you want email, configure it separately in your email preferences. Reddit’s documented alert for comments on your own post covers direct comments—not replies to someone else’s comment in the thread.
Choose the kind of Reddit alert you need
The right setting depends on what you want to monitor. Personal notifications cover activity associated with your account and posts; email preferences control which activity Reddit sends to your inbox; moderator notifications cover certain activity in a community you manage. Search helps you find existing content, but Reddit’s documented search features are not a recurring keyword-alert service.

Turn on personal notifications on desktop
- Sign in to Reddit.
- Open Settings and select the Notifications tab.
- Review the notification types and switch on the ones you want.
- If you want alerts by email, configure the relevant categories separately in your email preferences.
Reddit’s settings page provides controls for available notification types. The exact options shown can depend on the account and current interface.

- Open the profile or avatar menu.
- Go to Settings and open the account settings.

On Android, Reddit’s documented route places notification management under Contact settings. The iOS help instructions also direct users through account settings to manage notifications. Intermediate labels can vary by app version.

Get notified about comments on your own post
Enable the relevant post-comment notification in your account’s notification settings. Reddit’s documented coverage is specific: if you opt in, you can be notified when someone comments directly on your post, also called a parent comment. You will not get a notification when someone replies to another person’s comment in that discussion. If you need email delivery, check that the corresponding activity category is enabled in your email preferences.
Set up email activity notifications
Email is configured separately from in-app or site notifications. In your Reddit email preferences, enable the categories you want. Reddit lists activity that can include mentions, follows, upvotes, replies to comments, and comments on posts; the categories available and your choices determine what reaches your inbox.
Set moderator notifications for a community
- Open the community you moderate and go to Mod Tools.
- Open Mod Notifications.
- Turn on New Posts, Posts with comments, or both, depending on what you need to monitor.
These notifications are subject to rate limits, and Reddit lists exclusions, including posts older than seven days. Treat them as useful signals rather than a guarantee that every qualifying event will generate an alert.

Find posts and comments with Reddit search
Use search when you want to locate existing discussion rather than receive a recurring notification. You can search within a community or across Reddit, and narrow results with filters such as subreddit:, author:, title:, and selftext:. For example, subreddit:cats scopes results to that community, while title:cats searches titles for the term. Reddit also documents searching comments within an individual post.
These search tools do not, by themselves, mean Reddit will send a notification whenever a new matching post or comment appears. A general recurring keyword-alert setup is not established by the documented search features.
Troubleshoot missing Reddit alerts
- No alert for a nested reply: This is expected for the documented post-comment notification. It covers direct comments on your post, not replies to another commenter.
- No email arrives: Check the email preferences for the specific activity category you expect; email settings are separate from notification controls.
