How to Set Up QNAP Remote NAS Access with myQNAPcloud Link

Use myQNAPcloud Link for remote access to a QNAP NAS. Learn browser and mobile setup, access-control choices, security trade-offs, and troubleshooting.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For remote access to a QNAP NAS, use myQNAPcloud Link, not myQNAPcloud One. QNAP describes myQNAPcloud One as cloud storage for storing, managing, and sharing files; myQNAPcloud Link is the remote-connection service. The steps below cover browser access and QNAP mobile apps without manual port forwarding.

Before you begin: check the product name and compatibility

QNAP’s product listing describes myQNAPcloud One as cloud storage, while its remote-access instructions use myQNAPcloud and myQNAPcloud Link. If you specifically need a myQNAPcloud One storage account, these NAS remote-access steps are not its setup workflow.

For the mobile-app route, QNAP’s guide applies to supported NAS models running QTS 4.3.3 or later or QuTS hero h4.5.1 or later, and to QNAP mobile apps that support myQNAPcloud. Check your model and app support if the relevant controls do not appear. Menu labels can vary with NAS firmware.

Choose how you want to connect

Method Router changes Access and exposure Best fit and trade-off
myQNAPcloud Link No manual port forwarding is required. Access can pass through QNAP servers without exposing the NAS directly to the internet. Set device access controls and publish only services you intend to share. Convenient browser or compatible-app access. Relay performance can slow at peak times.
VPN Requires a VPN service configured on the router or NAS; QNAP suggests using the router’s VPN service where possible. QNAP recommends VPN to improve speed and connection security. It avoids publishing NAS services directly when configured as intended. A stronger option when security and performance matter, but setup requires networking knowledge.
Direct FQDN or public IP Requires forwarding NAS service ports. Forwarded services are exposed to internet attack; restrict access and understand the risk before using this method. QNAP says it may be faster for streaming, but it increases exposure and setup complexity.

QNAP provides no quantified throughput or latency comparison for these methods. Select based on the task and your comfort managing network access, rather than assuming one method will always be faster.

QNAP TR-004 4 Bay USB Type-C Direct Attached Storage (DAS) with hardware RAID (Diskless)
  • Direct-attached storage device via USB Type-C for Windows, macOS and Linux
  • Use the TR-004 as external storage for NAS backup
  • Expand the capacity of your QNAP NAS
  • 4 x 3.5-inch SATA 3Gb/s (Diskless)
  • Hardware RAID supports RAID 0, 1, 5, JBOD, and individual disks

Set up browser access with a SmartURL

  1. Create a QNAP ID if you do not already have one.
  2. Sign in to the NAS as an administrator and open myQNAPcloud.
  3. Select Get Started, sign in with your QNAP ID, and choose a globally unique device name.
  4. Choose the myQNAPcloud services you need and set device access control. Review the summary and complete registration.
  5. Sign in to the myQNAPcloud website, open My Devices, select the NAS, and open its SmartURL.
  6. At the page opened by the SmartURL, sign in with a NAS user account. Your QNAP ID registers and associates the device; it does not replace the NAS login.

QNAP’s browser tutorial was last modified 2022-08-02, so button names or locations may differ in newer firmware. See QNAP’s myQNAPcloud setup tutorial for its documented browser workflow.

Set up mobile access with myQNAPcloud Link

  1. Decide which QNAP ID will own the NAS registration. Create that account or have its credentials ready.
  2. Sign in to QTS or QuTS hero as an administrator. Open App Center; install myQNAPcloud if needed, then install myQNAPcloud Link.
  3. Open myQNAPcloud, sign in with the QNAP ID, and register a globally unique device name if prompted.
  4. Enable myQNAPcloud Link and select an access mode appropriate for the intended users. For personal access, QNAP gives Private as an example.
  5. Check that myQNAPcloud Link status reads Normal. The Overview page should show the QNAP ID, device name, and SmartURL.
  6. In a compatible QNAP app such as Qfile Pro, choose the myQNAPcloud connection option, sign in using the same QNAP ID, and select the registered NAS.
  7. When prompted, authenticate with a NAS user account. The app uses the QNAP ID to find the registered NAS; the NAS account controls login to it.

Set device access controls deliberately

QNAP documents three access modes for stand-alone devices. Choose based on who should discover the NAS and reach its services:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Public: The device is searchable, and published services are exposed on myQNAPcloud. Use this only when you intend those services to be publicly discoverable.
  • Private: The device is removed from search, and website access is restricted to its owner.
  • Customized: Visibility and access are limited to the owner and invited users.

Use a restricted mode for personal NAS access, and do not publish services merely to make remote connection work. QNAP’s device access-control documentation describes the modes; its QTS 5.1.x menu details may differ from later versions.

Rank #3
QNAP TS-264-8G-US 2 Bay Desktop NAS
  • Intel Quad-core CPU burst up to 2.9 GHz with 8GB RAM
  • Dual 2.5GbE (2.5G/1G/100M) ports accelerates file sharing across teams and devices or streamline large file transfers
  • Dual M.2 PCIe Gen3x2 NVMe SSD slots enable cache acceleration or SSD storage pools for improved performance
  • Multiple USB 3.2 Gen 2 ports (type-A) with up to 10Gb/s transfer speeds, allowing compatibility with newer, faster USB drives/expansion enclosures for transferring large media files
  • Centrally store and organize personal or family photos, music, and videos

Secure remote access

  • Keep the device in a restricted access mode and limit who can use or share its SmartURL.
  • Use strong, unique passwords and enable 2-step verification.
  • Keep QTS or QuTS hero, myQNAPcloud, and installed apps updated.
  • Avoid publishing NAS services unnecessarily. If you use direct access, understand that forwarding NAS service ports exposes those services to internet attack.

These precautions reflect QNAP’s security guidance for myQNAPcloud. For a VPN alternative, QNAP recommends connecting the NAS using a VPN to improve speed and connection security; consult its VPN connection FAQ. If a router VPN is unavailable, QNAP describes forwarding the QVPN service port instead of the NAS system port, a configuration that still requires care.

Troubleshoot a mobile app that cannot connect

  • Link is not Normal: Check myQNAPcloud Link status. If it is abnormal, QNAP suggests restarting the Link service or turning it off and back on.
  • The NAS does not appear in the app: Confirm the app and NAS use the same QNAP ID associated with the registered device.
  • The connection fails despite a Normal status: Confirm the NAS has internet access and that its system time and time zone are correct.
  • Controls or connection behavior seem outdated: Update myQNAPcloud and myQNAPcloud Link, along with the mobile app and NAS software.

QNAP’s current troubleshooting checks are included in its mobile-app remote-access FAQ.
