To use push-to-talk (PTT), choose PTT as the voice mode in your app, assign a key, and test it while the app or game is in the context where you need it. Discord’s browser version captures PTT only while its window is focused; Discord says system-wide PTT requires its desktop app. On Linux, a community workaround exists for some Discord setups, but it is not an official or universal fix.
Set up push-to-talk in Discord desktop
- Open User Settings and select Voice & Video.
- Under Input Mode, select Push to Talk.
- Record a shortcut in the PTT key field and check that the assigned key appears there.
- If speech cuts off immediately when you release the key, adjust Push to Talk Release Delay.
- Test pressing and releasing the key in the app or game context where you plan to talk. Choose a key that is not already claimed by the game or desktop environment.
PTT sends input audio only while you hold its assigned key, as Discord explains in its Voice Input Modes 101 guidance. Discord also documents desktop keybind options in its keyboard shortcuts and custom keybinds guide.

Know where the keybind works
Discord’s browser PTT works only while the browser window is focused. If you need to speak while another application or a game has focus, use Discord’s desktop app. A key that works while Discord is focused but not while another window is active points to a keybind-scope issue, not necessarily a microphone fault.
Configure and test Steam voice
- In Friends & Chat, open the gear/settings and go to Voice.
- Select the intended microphone and run Start Microphone Test.
- Choose the appropriate Voice Transmission Type.
- Check the key shown beside Push-to-talk hotkey assigned as, then test it in the context where you intend to use voice.
Steam’s microphone troubleshooting guidance recommends narrowing down whether an issue is hardware or software related, and whether it happens everywhere or only in a particular situation. If Steam voice works but a game does not, check whether the game is using a different input device or whether the problem is limited to a particular server. Steamworks describes the developer-side PTT model as starting voice recording when a user presses the key and stopping it on release; this is implementation context, not a player setup guide: Steam Voice documentation.

Try a community workaround for Discord PTT on Linux
The Discord-PTT-Linux project README describes a method for global Discord PTT that uses Discord in X11 mode, a configured PTT binding, and a helper daemon. Its instructions include example launch and package commands for Ubuntu/Debian, Fedora, and Arch. This is a community-maintained approach, not official Discord guidance; compatibility depends on the distribution, desktop session, and client setup.
The available guidance does not establish one official fix that works across Linux distributions, desktop environments, and Wayland sessions. Before trying the project approach, identify your distribution, desktop environment, session type (X11 or Wayland), Discord client/package, and whether the key works while Discord is focused. If the method does not fit your setup, avoid treating arbitrary downloaded scripts as a guaranteed fix.

Find the point where PTT stops working
- Check the physical microphone. Confirm it is connected; for a USB microphone, try another port or connect it without a hub.
- Check the operating-system input. Verify that the intended microphone is selected and its input level is usable.
- Test within the voice app. Use the app’s microphone test before adding a game or server to the diagnosis.
- Check the app configuration. Confirm the input device, PTT mode, and exact assigned key.
- Test the scope. Note whether the key fails only when a game is focused, whenever Discord is outside focus, or only on one server.
- Separate audio quality from key capture. For distortion or echo across apps, inspect the microphone connection and positioning. Earphones or headphones can reduce feedback from speakers, and Steam Support suggests trying another microphone if poor quality persists. Neither step is established as a fix for a global hotkey that the app cannot capture.
