Most big-screen apps show a four-character code; enter that code at plex.tv/link in a browser already signed in to the correct account. The app should refresh within a few seconds.
What changes when you replace the streaming device
A replacement streaming device is a new Plex player. It displays and plays video, but it does not replace the Plex Media Server that stores, organizes, and streams your personal media. If your server is on a computer, NAS, or another always-on system, leave that system running and signed in as before. You normally do not reinstall or rebuild the server merely because the television-side player changed.

The new player must be associated with the Plex account that has permission to see the content. That may be the account that owns your server or an account that has been invited to a friend’s shared server. Linking the app signs it into the account; it does not migrate media, move a server, or copy libraries to the new hardware.

What you need before starting
- The replacement streaming device connected to the television and powered on.
- An internet connection for installing the app and completing account linking.
- The email address and password, or another sign-in method, for the Plex account with the required library access.
- Your existing Plex Media Server online if you plan to watch personal media.
- The server and player connected to the same home network for ordinary local playback, unless you have working Remote Access for playback away from home.
Check compatibility before you spend time troubleshooting
Plex lists Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, Android TV, Roku, and other connected-device families as supported platforms. The exact app listing can vary by model, operating-system version, store, and country, so check the replacement device’s own app store rather than assuming that every device in a product family is supported.

When choosing hardware after a failure, verify three separate things:
| Check | Why it matters | What is established |
|---|---|---|
| Plex app support | The player needs an official Plex app available in its store. | Supported families include Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, Android TV, and other connected devices; support for a particular model or country is not stated. |
| Television and connection fit | The device must connect to your display and work with its available HDMI, power, audio, and remote-control arrangement. | Verify the specifications for the exact device and television; no model-level comparison is established here. |
| Home-network access | The player has to reach the server for local playback. | Plex’s quick-start guidance calls for the player and server to be on the same local network for local access. Remote viewing requires working Remote Access. |
If the replacement is already in your possession, no additional purchase is required for setup. Installing the player app and signing into the correct account are the essential tasks.
Install Plex on the replacement device
- Open the device’s app store. Use the store built into the Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, Android TV device, or other supported player.
- Search for “Plex.” Select the official Plex player application shown by the store. Availability and exact labels can differ by platform.
- Install the app. Wait for the store to finish downloading and installing it, then launch Plex from the store or the device’s app list.
- Allow the app to load. The first screen generally offers a sign-in option. If the app asks you to choose a server immediately, continue to sign in first so it can discover the servers available to your account.
The app on the television is the player. Installing it does not install Plex Media Server, alter your server’s database, or erase watched status held by your Plex account or server.
Link the app to your Plex account
On many television-oriented Plex apps, the sign-in process uses a four-character code so that you do not have to type a long password with a remote.

- Select Sign In in the Plex app. Leave the screen with the four-character code visible. Use the code from the current session; do not rely on a code copied from an earlier attempt.
- Open a browser on a phone or computer. Go to https://plex.tv/link.
- Confirm the browser account. Before entering the code, check that the browser is signed into the Plex account that owns the desired server or has been invited to the desired shared libraries. A browser logged into a different household member’s account can complete linking successfully but show the wrong content.
- Enter the four-character code and submit it. Follow the page’s confirmation prompt.
- Wait for the player to refresh. Plex says the app should refresh a few seconds after successful linking. If it stays on the code screen, return to the app and retry the sign-in flow with the code currently displayed.
Connecting or linking your app signs it in to your Plex account, which has multiple benefits, including letting the app locate servers you own and content shared with that account. Linking is an account sign-in action, not a transfer of the server from the old device.
Confirm that the expected server and libraries appear
After the refresh, open the server or library selector in the Plex app and check for the libraries you used on the old player. The exact menu names differ among device families, but the account should expose the servers and shared content that the signed-in account is allowed to use.
If you own the server
Make sure the server computer or NAS is powered on, Plex Media Server is running, and that server is signed into the Plex account you intended to use. The new player does not need the server’s administrator password; it needs an account with access to the server.

Test one item before changing settings
Play a short, known-good item from the expected library. This separates account and discovery problems from an issue with a particular file, subtitle track, or audio format. If one item plays, try a second item from another library before concluding that the replacement is fully configured.
Network requirements: local versus remote playback
For playback at home, Plex’s quick-start guidance expects the player and the Plex Media Server to be on the same local network. “Connected to Wi-Fi” is not enough if the player is on a guest network, an isolated VLAN, or a different router segment that blocks local discovery.
Local playback checklist
- Connect the replacement player to the same home network name or wired network used by the server.
- Disable guest-network isolation for the player, or move it to the primary home network.
- Check that the server computer or NAS is online and that Plex Media Server is running.
- Temporarily test from a device on the same network if you need to determine whether the server itself is reachable.
When the player and server are on different networks, local discovery may fail even though both devices have internet access. Correcting the network path is more useful than repeatedly reinstalling the player app.

Outside the home network, the player depends on Remote Access being set up and running on the Plex Media Server. If local playback works but remote playback does not, focus on the server’s Remote Access status, router configuration, and internet connection rather than the replacement device’s app installation. The setup material does not establish a universal port, router model, or performance result, so use the Remote Access status shown by your own server.

Troubleshoot the four-character link code
The code is rejected
- Return to the Plex app and confirm that the code is still the one displayed by the current sign-in session.
- In the browser, open https://plex.tv/link again and verify the signed-in Plex account before entering anything.
- Enter the code exactly as shown, then submit it.
- If the attempt fails, back out of the app’s sign-in screen, start a fresh sign-in attempt, and use the newly displayed code.
Plex’s linking instructions do not specify a code-expiration interval, so do not assume a fixed timeout. The reliable recovery is to use the current code from a newly started app session and the intended account in the browser.
The app does not refresh after a successful submission
Allow a few seconds for the normal refresh. If nothing changes, confirm that the browser reported success, then restart the sign-in flow in the app and link again. A full device reboot can be useful if the app is visibly frozen, but it does not correct an account mismatch.
The browser is signed into the wrong account
Sign out of the browser or use a private window, sign in to the account with the required server permission, and repeat the code entry. A successful link to the wrong account can look like a technical failure because the resulting home screen contains no expected libraries.
Troubleshoot missing servers or libraries
Verify account permission first
Open the Plex account details in a browser or another known-working player and verify whether that account can see the server. If the server is shared, confirm that the owner invited the exact account now linked to the replacement device. If the account cannot see the library elsewhere, the replacement player cannot restore access on its own.

Verify the server’s sign-in and status
On the computer or NAS hosting Plex Media Server, confirm that the server is running and signed into its Plex account. A server that is stopped, signed out, or unavailable on the network will not appear reliably even when the player account is correct.
Verify local connectivity
For an in-home test, place the player and server on the same local network and try again. Check for guest Wi-Fi, client isolation, separate routers, or a recently changed network name. If the server appears locally but not while traveling, investigate Remote Access rather than reinstalling Plex.
Check the library view and filters
Make sure you are looking at the correct server and library in the app. A filter, a different user profile, or a changed library view can hide items without indicating that the server is offline. Clear or change the view only after confirming that the correct account is linked.

Remove the old device (optional)
Replacing hardware does not require deleting the old player. If the failed device remains in your account, Plex’s Authorized Devices list lets the account owner inspect linked devices and remove ones that are no longer used.
- Open the Plex account’s Authorized Devices list in a browser.
- Identify the old player by its device name or platform.
- Remove it only if you no longer want that device authorized.
- Keep the replacement linked and test playback before removing anything you still need.
Removing an entry is housekeeping, not a server transfer. It does not move libraries or change the server’s storage. If you remove a device and later recover it, Plex says to sign out in that device’s app and sign back in to register it again.
Choosing a replacement when the old hardware failed
If you are still deciding what to buy, start with compatibility rather than advertised speed. Plex identifies supported platform families, but the available evidence does not establish a current ranking of individual models, prices, decoding performance, or regional store catalogs.
| Decision question | How to evaluate it | Evidence limit |
|---|---|---|
| Is Plex available? | Search the exact model’s built-in store before purchase or check the manufacturer’s current app support. | Family-level support is listed; exact-model and country availability are not stated. |
| Will it connect to the display? | Match HDMI, power, audio, remote, and any required adapter to the television and sound system. | No device-specific connector comparison is provided. |
| Can it reach the server? | Confirm Wi-Fi or Ethernet compatibility with the home network where the server runs. | Same-local-network guidance is established; no wireless standard or throughput ranking is provided. |
| Do you need new hardware? | If the current replacement already has a supported Plex app, install and link it rather than buying another player. | No purchase is required merely to reconnect an existing account. |
A complete replacement-day checklist
- Connect the new player to the television and home network.
- Install Plex from that device’s app store.
- Open Plex and select Sign In.
- Keep the current four-character code on screen, if shown.
- Visit https://plex.tv/link in a browser signed into the correct Plex account.
- Submit the code and wait for the app to refresh.
- Confirm that the expected owned or shared server appears.
- Test a known-good item from a library.
- If local playback fails, put player and server on the same local network and check that the server is running.
- If remote playback fails, verify that Remote Access is working on the server.
- Optionally remove the retired player from Authorized Devices after the replacement works.
What you do not need to do
- You do not need to reinstall Plex Media Server solely because the television-side player changed.
- You do not need to migrate or copy media to the replacement player.
- You do not need to delete the old device before linking the new one.
- You do not need to buy another streaming device if the one you already have offers the Plex app.
- You should not create a new Plex account when the existing account already owns or has access to the required libraries.
Once the app is installed, linked to the correct account, and able to reach the running server, the replacement device is ready. Any remaining failure can be narrowed to one of three areas: account permission, server availability, or network path.
