How to Set Up Playwright Screenshot Tests for an Indian Ecommerce Website

A practical Playwright setup for ecommerce visual tests, including India-facing fixtures, stable screenshot baselines, CI, and failure diagnosis.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Install Playwright Test, define a small browser-and-device matrix, and use expect(page).toHaveScreenshot() to create reviewed visual baselines. For an Indian ecommerce store, make the tested state deterministic—including delivery location, currency display, product data, and checkout copy—so a failed comparison points to a meaningful UI change rather than shifting catalogue data.

Install Playwright Test and its browsers

Use the language and package manager already established in your web project. For a new Node.js project, Playwright’s initializer creates a starting test setup; in an existing project, add the test package directly. Install the browser binaries that match the installed Playwright version.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

npm init playwright@latest
npx playwright install

For an existing Node.js project:

npm install --save-dev @playwright/test
npx playwright install

Commit the package lockfile and keep the Playwright package and browser binaries aligned. Playwright notes that browser binaries are tied to Playwright versions and may need to be reinstalled after an upgrade. See the Playwright browser guide.

Choose a small, useful browser and device matrix

Start with the browsers and viewports that reflect customer usage and support commitments. Each added project creates another rendering configuration whose screenshots may need their own baselines. Playwright supports Chromium, Firefox, WebKit, branded browser channels, and emulated mobile and tablet devices; consult its current browser and device documentation for available configurations and descriptor names.

Philips 24 Inch Computer Monitor FHD 100Hz VA VESA Flicker-Free, 241V8LB | 1920×1080 LED Monitor, 4ms GtG, Adaptive Sync, HDMI 1.4, Tilt Adjust, Low Blue Light, 4yr Advance Replacement Warranty
  • CRISP CLARITY: This 23.8″ Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail
  • INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
  • THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
  • WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
  • A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents

This example checks desktop Chromium and mobile WebKit. Treat the device names as configuration examples, and verify that they remain available in the Playwright version you install.

// playwright.config.ts
import { defineConfig, devices } from '@playwright/test';

export default defineConfig({
  testDir: './tests',
  projects: [
    {
      name: 'chromium-desktop',
      use: { ...devices['Desktop Chrome'] },
    },
    {
      name: 'webkit-mobile',
      use: { ...devices['iPhone 13'] },
    },
  ],
  expect: {
    toHaveScreenshot: {
      animations: 'disabled',
      caret: 'hide',
    },
  },
});

Do not add every browser and device combination by default. Expand the matrix when customer usage, support requirements, or a rendering defect justifies the extra coverage and baseline maintenance.

Pick ecommerce states that are repeatable

Build tests around user-visible journeys and controlled state, rather than internal implementation details. A useful first set of candidates is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • A home or campaign page with a seeded campaign.
  • A product listing with a stable filter and sort selection.
  • A product detail page with its primary image loaded and a known variant selected.
  • A cart containing a known item, quantity, and configured price display.
  • A delivery or address step using a deterministic test location.
  • A checkout review screen showing the store’s configured labels and totals.

These are coverage suggestions, not rules every store must follow. Seed or fixture the inventory, images, prices, delivery eligibility, and account state needed by each test. Playwright recommends independent tests that do not share cookies, storage, or data state; see its testing best practices. Prefer a controlled test route or fixture to a live production catalogue, where promotions, stock, recommendations, or personalized content can change independently of your code.

  • CRISP CLARITY: This 22 inch class (21.5″ viewable) Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail

Write a first visual test

Navigate to a stable test state, assert that the expected user-visible content is present, and then compare the page with its screenshot baseline. The route and accessible names below are illustrative; replace them with real routes and semantics from your application.

// tests/product-list.spec.ts
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';

test('product listing visual baseline', async ({ page }) => {
  await page.goto('/test-fixtures/category/footwear?region=mumbai');

  await expect(page.getByRole('heading', { name: 'Footwear' })).toBeVisible();
  await expect(page.getByRole('list', { name: 'Products' })).toBeVisible();
  await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('footwear-listing.png', {
    fullPage: true,
  });
});

Use roles, labels, and visible text where practical instead of selectors coupled to incidental CSS classes. Playwright’s toHaveScreenshot() waits for two consecutive screenshots to match before it compares them, but that does not replace assertions that the application reached the intended state. The PageAssertions API documents the assertion and its options.

Capture a component when the rest of the page is noise

A full-page screenshot is useful for layout and journey coverage. If unrelated page regions change frequently, capture a stable component instead:

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
await expect(page.getByTestId('product-card-101')).toHaveScreenshot('product-card.png');

Use a test ID when it expresses a stable test contract. Otherwise, prefer a user-facing locator. A component screenshot narrows what the test protects; it does not replace page-level checks where the surrounding layout matters.

Represent India-facing details with fixtures, not assumptions

The Indian context should affect which configured states you test, not lead to assumptions about what every Indian store must display. Depending on the features your site actually supports, fixtures might cover:

  • A seeded PIN code or delivery location, with the selected region visible.
  • The application’s configured rupee or other currency representation and price precision.
  • The store’s own tax, delivery-fee, offer, and checkout wording.
  • A payment or address state that appears in the tested journey.
  • Region-dependent availability or offers, driven by a mocked or deterministic location.

A BrowserStack example repository includes a Mumbai-location offer scenario alongside purchase-flow and image-loading examples. That is a possible testing pattern, not authority for any store’s tax, payment, or consumer-law obligations. Have the relevant product and compliance owners define expected business values; use screenshot tests to check how those configured values render.

Reduce noisy screenshot differences without hiding regressions

Playwright’s guidance is explicit: “For consistent screenshots, run tests in the same environment where the baseline screenshots were generated.” See Visual comparisons. Screenshot output can vary with operating system, browser version, hardware, settings, and headless mode, so make the comparison environment deliberate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Use the same operating system, project configuration, Playwright package version, and browser binaries for baseline generation and comparison.
  • Set viewport and device options explicitly in the project, and do not compare a desktop baseline to a mobile run.
  • Wait for fixture data and important images to reach known states before capture.
  • Disable animations or hide the caret when they are irrelevant to the scenario; the screenshot assertion provides controls for both.
  • Use masking or a stylePath stylesheet only for genuinely nondeterministic content that is outside the test’s purpose, such as an unrelated rotating ad.
  • Do not mask the product price, delivery eligibility, key product imagery, stock notice, or checkout total when the test is meant to protect those elements.

The assertion API documentation describes masking locators and screenshot styling options. Prefer deterministic fixtures to broad masking: masks can make a noisy test quieter while also concealing a real change.

Create, review, and update screenshot baselines

Run the tests to generate initial expected screenshots, then inspect them before committing. A baseline records what the UI rendered; it does not certify that the rendering is correct. Once approved, keep snapshots under version control with the test code.

npx playwright test

When a comparison fails, inspect the expected image, actual image, and diff. Decide whether the change is an intended design update, an environment mismatch, unstable input data, or a real regression. Only after approving an intentional UI change should you regenerate snapshots:

npx playwright test --update-snapshots

Playwright documents first-run snapshot creation, review, version control, and the update option in its visual comparison guide. Avoid using snapshot updates as a routine way to clear failures.

Run the suite in CI and scale coverage deliberately

For reliable comparisons, use the same pinned Playwright package and browser installation that produced the accepted baselines. Local and CI environments that differ can produce image noise; use a consistent CI image or generate and compare snapshots in the same CI environment. Run visual tests on pull requests if their execution time fits the team’s workflow, and retain actual, expected, and diff artifacts using the repository’s CI practices.

Add Firefox, additional desktop browsers, or more mobile projects when usage data, support policy, or observed defects make their coverage worthwhile. A cloud service is another option if you need broader browser or real-device execution. BrowserStack’s Playwright page describes browser and device configurations, parallel execution, CI integration, and debugging artifacts; check its current availability, pricing, security requirements, and commercial terms directly before adopting it.

Choose the screenshot scope and execution approach

Choice Useful when Trade-off
Page screenshot You need to catch journey-level layout and composition changes. More page content can introduce unrelated volatility.
Component screenshot A focused card, panel, or other region has a stable test contract. It does not show how that component fits into the whole page.
Desktop or mobile project The viewport reflects customer use or a meaningful layout risk. Each distinct configuration can require its own baseline.
One browser or a browser matrix You want coverage matched to your supported browsers and known risks. More browsers mean more configurations and snapshots to maintain.
Local CI or cloud execution Local CI fits the team’s needs, or broader device execution is needed. Cloud execution adds a service decision; verify its current terms and fit.
Deterministic fixture or mask Fixtures should cover meaningful UI; masks can isolate irrelevant external volatility. Overuse of masks can conceal changes that the test should catch.

Or skip the browser setup

For a direct screenshot request instead of maintaining a Playwright browser project, ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns an image or PDF. For example, this cURL request captures a page as WebP:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before a shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, with no card.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a screenshot test confirm that an ecommerce tax or payment rule is legally correct?

No. It checks how the configured state is rendered; business and compliance owners must establish the expected rule.

Should I generate baselines from the live store?

Use a controlled test route or fixture for stable inputs; live catalogue content can change independently of code.
