OneGuide can put your cable or satellite channels in the Xbox One TV interface and let the console send commands to a compatible set-top box. TV power and volume are a separate configuration: the Xbox must also be taught how to control the television, normally through infrared (IR). The exact provider list, prompts and feature availability depend on your country, TV provider, set-top-box model and Xbox system software.
Use this sequence: connect the live-TV signal to the Xbox One, open Settings > TV & OneGuide, select your location and provider when prompted, test channel commands, then run the separate TV-control setup for power and volume. An Xbox One Media Remote is optional; it does not replace the provider and TV configuration.

What OneGuide controls—and what it does not
OneGuide combines live television with Xbox navigation, but it is not one universal remote-learning mode. The cable or satellite receiver and the television are separate targets.
| Task | What must be configured | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Change cable or satellite channels | A compatible set-top box, location and TV-provider selection in OneGuide | Xbox sends channel commands to the receiver and displays its live-TV source. |
| Turn the TV on or off | Separate TV-control setup in TV & OneGuide | The console sends the television’s power command when the hardware and IR path support it. |
| Raise or lower TV volume | The same separate TV-control setup | Volume commands target the TV (or configured receiver), not automatically the cable box. |
| Navigate Xbox menus | No provider setup required | Use the Xbox controller, voice control where available, or a compatible media remote. |
Microsoft described the Xbox One Media Remote’s TV and receiver control this way: “The Media Remote can also control TV/Receiver power and volume through Kinect, which uses IR blasting to send signals to your TV and/or receiver.” Read the original announcement at Xbox Wire. This explains why an IR-capable Kinect placement or another supported IR arrangement can matter. It does not establish that every television, receiver or console revision will work identically.

Check compatibility before changing settings
Confirm the equipment chain
You need an Xbox One, a television, a cable or satellite receiver with an active service subscription, and the cables required by those devices. A conventional OneGuide arrangement uses the receiver’s video output as the Xbox live-TV input and the Xbox video output as the television feed. Check the labels on your console before connecting anything: the receiver should feed the Xbox input, while the Xbox output feeds the TV. If your receiver or television uses a different connection, follow the device manuals and the official Xbox home-theater connection guide.
Check region and provider support
OneGuide’s provider data is location-specific. The provider list and channel metadata available in one country may not appear in another, and a particular set-top-box model may not respond even when its provider is listed. Treat the official Xbox live-TV setup page as the current reference, then verify support with your provider if the box is not recognized.
Keep the software context in mind
Xbox menus change as system software is updated. The path below is the documented path in the Xbox One media-remote quick-start instructions, but the wording or order of prompts on your console can differ. If you see different labels, stay in the TV and OneGuide area rather than selecting an unrelated device or accessory menu.

1. Connect the receiver and television
- Power off the Xbox One, television and cable or satellite receiver.
- Connect the receiver’s video output to the Xbox One input intended for live TV. Connect the Xbox One output to the television input you normally use for the console.
- Turn on the receiver first, then the television and Xbox. Select the television input carrying the Xbox signal.
- Use the receiver’s own remote to confirm that a subscribed channel produces a live picture before configuring OneGuide. OneGuide can send commands only after the receiver is receiving service and the console can see its video signal.
If this arrangement does not match the ports on your equipment, stop and consult the manufacturer diagrams or the Xbox home-theater guide rather than repeatedly changing OneGuide settings.
2. Open TV & OneGuide
- From the Xbox home screen, open Settings.
- Choose TV & OneGuide.
- Start the live-TV or provider configuration shown on screen.
- Read each prompt carefully. The console may ask for your location, ZIP code or postal code, provider and receiver information.
The accessory instructions that document this path say to follow the on-screen prompts for the remote’s button setup and identify TV & OneGuide as the place where compatible cable or satellite boxes are configured. Because current software can present different prompts, do not assume that a prompt shown in an older quick-start guide will appear word for word on your console.
3. Enter location and provider information
Enter the requested geographic information exactly. A Nex-Tech Xbox OneGuide manual, for example, asks the user to enter a ZIP code and select a TV provider before the console communicates with the connected set-top box. That is a provider-specific example, not a universal Xbox requirement. Your setup may use a different location field or provider-selection screen.
Choose the provider that actually supplies the connected receiver. Selecting a similarly named provider in another region can load incorrect channel data or send commands the box does not understand. If your provider is missing, do not substitute a random listing; use the troubleshooting branch below and confirm support with the provider.
4. Let OneGuide identify the receiver
Allow the console to complete its on-screen test. It may ask you to confirm whether the receiver changed channel or responded to a power command. Keep the receiver pointed toward the console’s supported IR path if the prompt calls for a test. Answer only after observing the receiver, not merely after the prompt advances.
5. Test channel control
- Open OneGuide from the Xbox interface.
- Select a channel that is included in your subscription.
- Watch the receiver and television for a channel change.
- Try a second channel, including one with a different number of digits, if the first test succeeds.
If OneGuide displays listings but the receiver does not change channel, the guide data and command path are not both working. Continue with the channel troubleshooting section instead of moving on to TV power and volume.
Configure TV power and volume separately
Channel changes and television control are related but distinct. The media-remote instructions specifically separate changing channels on a compatible cable or satellite box from configuring the console to control TV power and volume.

Run the TV-control prompts
- Return to Settings > TV & OneGuide.
- Open the TV-device or TV-control setup offered by your current software.
- Select the television or receiver target requested by the prompt.
- Follow the on-screen test for power, then volume. Confirm each result before continuing.
Some home-theater arrangements route sound through an AV receiver or soundbar. If the prompt lets you choose a control target, select the device that actually changes the listening volume. If the television picture changes but sound does not, the console may be controlling the wrong device.

Microsoft’s description of the Media Remote says TV and receiver power and volume operate through Kinect’s IR blasting. In practical terms, the IR transmitter must have a usable path to the device’s sensor, and the selected device must understand the command. Do not place the Kinect or any supported IR hardware behind the television, inside a closed cabinet or where the receiver’s sensor is blocked.
IR behavior is hardware-dependent. A successful channel setup does not prove that TV power and volume will work, because those functions can use different codes or a different target. Test power and volume independently.
Use a Media Remote only if you want one
An Xbox One Media Remote can make navigation easier, but it is optional. You can complete OneGuide configuration with the Xbox controller. The quick-start instructions place the remote’s button setup under Settings > TV & OneGuide; they do not establish that the remote is required for live-TV setup or that it guarantees compatibility with every TV and receiver.
If you use a remote:
- Insert its batteries and keep the remote within normal operating range of the console.
- Open Settings > TV & OneGuide and choose the remote or button-setup option shown by your software.
- Follow each pairing or button-test prompt.
- Test guide navigation, channel changes, TV power and volume as separate functions.
Buy or borrow a remote only after checking the exact console, television and receiver combination. The cited Microsoft announcement is from 2014, and the available documents do not verify current stock, a current sales program or universal compatibility.

OneGuide has no provider or the wrong provider
- Recheck the location or ZIP/postal code you entered.
- Make sure the selected provider supplies the receiver physically connected to the Xbox.
- Check the provider’s support for Xbox OneGuide and your receiver model.
- Do not use a neighboring provider merely because its name looks similar. Incorrect provider data can produce listings that do not match your subscription.
Provider availability is unresolved by a generic Xbox menu. If the correct provider never appears, the limitation may be regional, software-related or provider-specific rather than a cabling failure.
Listings appear, but channels do not change
- Use the receiver’s original remote to prove that the subscription and receiver are working.
- Confirm that the receiver’s video output still feeds the Xbox input and that the Xbox output feeds the TV.
- Repeat the receiver identification test in Settings > TV & OneGuide.
- Check the IR path. Remove obstacles and avoid enclosing the receiver or IR hardware in a cabinet.
- Test a subscribed channel with a simple number, then another channel. A listing alone does not prove that commands are reaching the box.
The TV picture works, but power or volume does not
- Run the separate TV-control setup; channel configuration does not automatically configure TV controls.
- Check whether volume is produced by the television, an AV receiver or a soundbar, and target that device.
- Improve the IR path and repeat the power and volume tests individually.
- Verify that the console software offers your television or receiver family. If it does not, the device may not be supported by the available command set.
The Media Remote does not control anything
- Confirm that the remote’s button setup was completed under Settings > TV & OneGuide.
- Test the Xbox controller to separate a OneGuide configuration problem from a remote problem.
- Replace batteries and retry the on-screen test.
- Remember that the remote is not a substitute for provider selection or TV-control configuration.
The menus do not match this guide
Do not force an older prompt sequence onto a newer build. Look for the current TV and OneGuide section, check the official live-TV support page, and record your Xbox software version, console model, region, provider and receiver model before contacting support. Those details determine whether a missing option is expected.
There is no live picture through OneGuide
- Confirm that the receiver is powered on and showing a subscribed channel using its own remote.
- Verify the selected TV input and the Xbox input/output connections.
- Restart the receiver and Xbox after checking cables.
- If the receiver works directly with the TV but not through the Xbox, consult the official home-theater connection guidance and check the receiver’s output format and compatibility.
What to record before asking for help
Support can diagnose this setup much faster when you provide a complete equipment description. Record:
- Xbox One model and current system-software version.
- Country or region and the ZIP/postal code used during setup.
- TV provider name and receiver model.
- Television model and, if applicable, AV receiver or soundbar model.
- Whether the failure affects channel changes, TV power, volume, guide listings or the live picture.
- Whether the receiver responds to its original remote and whether the Xbox controller can navigate OneGuide.
This separates a provider-data problem from a connection problem and from an IR-control problem.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need an Xbox One Media Remote to use OneGuide?
No. The controller can navigate the console, and the remote is an optional convenience accessory. Its documented setup is in TV & OneGuide, but the available instructions do not make it a requirement for live-TV configuration.

Can OneGuide control any cable or satellite box?
No universal compatibility guarantee is established. Support depends on region, provider, receiver model and current Xbox software. Confirm the combination with the provider and Xbox support before assuming that channel commands will work.
Why does channel changing work while TV volume does not?
They are separate targets and setup tasks. Channel commands go to the cable or satellite receiver, while power and volume must be configured for the television or another audio device and normally depend on a working IR path.
What if my provider asks for a ZIP code?
Enter the ZIP or postal code for the service location, then select the provider serving that location. The Nex-Tech manual documents this sequence for its own service; other providers may show different fields.

Is Kinect required?
The cited Microsoft announcement describes TV and receiver power and volume through Kinect IR. Whether your particular Xbox One setup needs Kinect or another supported IR arrangement depends on the console, accessory, TV and receiver. Check the current setup prompts rather than assuming Kinect is either universally required or universally sufficient.
Bottom line
Start with the signal path, then configure the receiver in Settings > TV & OneGuide using your actual location and provider. Test channel commands before configuring TV power and volume as a separate step. Treat the Media Remote as optional, keep the IR path clear, and verify current provider and hardware support whenever the menus or behavior differ from these instructions.
