Set up a small set of clearly named OBS scenes, assign a dedicated hotkey to each, and test every transition and audio source before going live. Use Studio Mode when you want to preview the next scene before viewers see it. For an all-night stream, treat this as a setup and monitoring workflow—not a guarantee that OBS, your computer, network, or streaming platform will stay uninterrupted.
Plan the scenes your ASMR stream actually needs
An OBS scene is a layout built from sources such as a camera, image, text, or media file. Start with the visual states your broadcast requires rather than creating scenes for every small variation. For example, you might use an opening slate, a main close-up or tabletop view, an alternate angle, a brief break screen, and an ending slate. These are examples, not required presets.

In the Scenes dock, give each scene a name that makes its purpose obvious while you operate. Add the sources needed for that layout, then inspect their order: sources higher in the list appear above sources beneath them. Set up native scene hotkeys
- In OBS, open Settings → Hotkeys.
- Find the “Switch to a specific Scene” function for each scene and assign a distinct key or key combination.
- Choose controls that are easy to remember and unlikely to be pressed accidentally. Avoid overlapping assignments that could trigger the wrong scene or another action.
- Apply the settings, return to the main OBS window, and rehearse the entire scene sequence while watching the preview.
OBS includes hotkeys for switching to a specific scene, so basic switching does not require a plugin or dedicated control hardware. The OBS Studio Overview Guide covers hotkeys and scene operation.

Choose how scene changes appear
Cut for an immediate change
Use Cut when you want the next scene to appear instantly—for example, when moving from an opening slate to the main camera view.
Fade for a softer change
Use Fade for a gradual transition. OBS provides Cut and Fade by default, and lets you adjust transition duration. Choose a change that suits the quiet viewing experience you want; a dramatic transition is not automatically a better fit for ASMR.

Studio Mode to preview before going live
Enable Studio Mode when you want to prepare a scene without immediately showing your edits to viewers. Set up the next scene in the edit area, check its sources, then press Transition to make it live. Rehearse this extra step so you do not mistake a prepared preview for the scene viewers currently see. OBS documents Studio Mode and transitions in its overview guide.
Check the microphone and any audio media
- Open OBS audio settings and select the microphone you intend to use.
- Speak or make a brief test sound and confirm that the corresponding Audio Mixer meter responds.
- Listen to a local recording or private test where possible. Meter movement confirms activity, but does not establish that the audio is clean or at a suitable level.
- If a scene uses a Media Source for audio, check whether Loop should be enabled and review the options for restarting playback when active or closing a file while inactive.
OBS lists MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV as supported audio formats for Media Sources. Its Media Sources guide explains the playback options. The OBS Quick Start Guide recommends checking selected devices and testing before a first broadcast.

There is no universal microphone, gain setting, filter, or recording format established for every ASMR creator: the right choice depends on your equipment, room, and intended sound. Test processing carefully, since a filter can change subtle sounds.
Test the complete sequence before an all-night broadcast
- Switch through every scene and confirm that each hotkey selects the intended one.
- Check transitions, including the Studio Mode preview-to-live step if you use it.
- Confirm that the intended camera, microphone, overlays, and media are present, correctly ordered, and visible.
- Verify that any looping audio or other media behaves as expected when its scene becomes active.
- Make a short recording or test stream and review it. OBS says in its Quick Start Guide: “We strongly encourage running a test for a few minutes to make sure that there are no issues, rather than just jumping in to your first stream or recording.”
A few minutes of testing cannot establish overnight reliability. For a long broadcast, consider a longer private or unlisted rehearsal under the conditions you expect to use, and arrange a way to monitor the stream. OBS’s documentation describes setup and testing workflows; it does not promise uninterrupted overnight operation for a particular computer, plugin combination, network, or platform. Follow the live-stream rules of your chosen platform, including its copyright requirements, and use only material you have permission to stream.

Choose the switching method that fits your stream

When to consider automation or hardware
Start with native hotkeys if you will be operating the stream. For condition-based automation, the OBS Project Forums listing for Advanced Scene Switcher reports version 1.36.1, updated August 7, 2026, and a minimum OBS Studio version of 31.1.1. Plugin versions and compatibility can change; check the current listing against your installed OBS version and back up your settings before depending on macros for a long run.
A Stream Deck is an optional physical control, not a prerequisite for switching scenes. OBS’s Plugins Guide mentions it as hardware some plugins allow OBS Studio to communicate with. Check the compatibility of the particular device and plugin before purchasing or building a workflow around it.
