How to Set Up OBS on an Oracle Cloud Ubuntu VPS for 24/7 YouTube Streaming

A practical OCI Ubuntu VPS walkthrough for OBS and YouTube Live, including display requirements, network rules, encoding settings, testing, and recovery limits.

You can run OBS on an Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) Ubuntu VPS and send a continuous broadcast to YouTube, but the VM alone does not make the setup 24/7-ready. OBS needs a working Linux graphics/display environment, enough sustained CPU and network capacity for your chosen output, and a tested way to recover from reboots, disconnects, and application failures. This walkthrough uses Ubuntu 24.04 on x86_64 as a reference baseline; it does not name an OCI shape or region because there is no validated shape-specific performance or uptime figure for this workload.

What you need before you begin

  • An OCI account with permission to create Compute instances, virtual cloud networks (VCNs), and network security groups (NSGs).
  • An Ubuntu 24.04 x86_64 platform image, if available in your selected OCI region. Check the image and architecture shown in the console before creating the VM.
  • A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube.
  • A video or scene that OBS can capture, a stream key from YouTube Live Control Room, and enough sustained outbound bandwidth for the selected stream bitrate plus overhead.
  • A plan for OBS’s Linux display requirement. OBS lists OpenGL 3.3 and X Window System or Wayland for Linux; a minimal shell-only server image should not be assumed to provide a usable display session.

Choose your OCI shape, region, display arrangement, and encoder based on the actual workload, then validate the combination. A vCPU count by itself cannot establish whether a machine will sustain a particular resolution, frame rate, or scene. OBS notes that CPU requirements vary with encoder, resolution, FPS, and scene complexity, and that meeting its basic system requirements does not guarantee streaming capability.

1. Create the OCI Ubuntu instance

Choose an image and shape

  1. In the OCI Console, open Compute > Instances and choose the option to create an instance.
  2. Select an Ubuntu platform image. For the examples below, the intended baseline is Ubuntu 24.04 x86_64; confirm that exact release and architecture in the image selector rather than assuming all regional images are identical.
  3. Choose a shape with resources appropriate to your scene and encoder. There is no validated OCI shape recommendation here for a given resolution, frame rate, or uninterrupted runtime. Do not assume an Always Free or lower-cost shape can sustain a target stream without testing.
  4. Choose the VCN and subnet for the instance. A public IP can allow direct internet administration; a bastion or other private-access design can avoid exposing SSH directly to the internet.
  5. Configure SSH access and retain the private key securely. Restrict SSH to a trusted source address range where possible.

Choose a region for the network path

Select a region based on your operational needs and test its outbound path to YouTube ingest from the actual instance. OCI documentation for launching an instance covers image, VNIC, subnet, and public-IP choices, but the reviewed sources do not establish a best region or an egress-performance guarantee for OBS streaming.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Configure OCI and Ubuntu networking safely

Allow administration, not unsolicited YouTube traffic

OCI network controls and the guest operating system’s firewall are separate layers. Prefer an NSG for instance-level rules; Oracle recommends NSGs over security lists. Add only the inbound SSH rule you need, ideally restricted to your trusted IP range. OBS pushes the broadcast out to YouTube, so this workflow does not require an inbound YouTube port.

Keep the instance’s outbound access available so OBS can reach YouTube’s ingest service. If your organization limits egress, verify the approved route and rules with its network administrator before testing.

Be cautious with the guest firewall

Oracle’s Ubuntu platform-image guidance warns that UFW changes might prevent an instance from booting. Do not casually enable or rewrite UFW rules over SSH. If host-firewall changes are necessary, follow Oracle’s Ubuntu-specific platform-image guidance and ensure you have a recovery route before applying them.

Run them in a terminal session on the VPS. The OBS download page is the authority for whether the PPA still supports your chosen release; do not rely on an older generic Linux article as proof that every Ubuntu version is currently supported.

Establish and test a Linux display session

OBS on Linux requires OpenGL 3.3 and X Window System or Wayland. Installing the package on a minimal Ubuntu server does not by itself prove that those requirements are met. Before configuring a live broadcast, establish a display/session arrangement suitable for OBS—such as an actual desktop session or another arrangement you have specifically tested—and verify that OBS launches and can access the intended scene sources in that environment.

The official OBS system requirements do not prescribe an OCI-specific virtual-display setup. For that reason, this walkthrough does not claim that a particular virtual-display package, desktop, or shell-only configuration will work on every OCI image. Record which arrangement you use, how it starts after a reboot, and how you regain access if the session fails.

4. Enable YouTube Live and connect OBS

Activate live streaming and create a stream

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room for the channel and enable live streaming if it is not already enabled. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so complete this before your planned start.
  2. Create or configure the broadcast in Live Control Room and locate its stream key and ingest settings.
  3. Treat the stream key like a password. Do not put it in screenshots, source code, command history, or publicly accessible logs. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube and update OBS.

Enter the key and select secure ingest in OBS

  1. Open OBS and go to Settings > Stream.
  2. Select the YouTube service and the RTMPS ingest option where available. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP.
  3. Enter the stream key in OBS’s stream-key field and save the settings. Do not publish the key.
  4. Set up your scene and audio sources, then start streaming from OBS. Check the incoming preview and stream status in Live Control Room before making the broadcast public.

5. Set a YouTube-compatible output

In OBS, open Settings > Output and configure the video encoder and bitrate for the actual resolution and frame rate you intend to send. Use YouTube’s recommendation row for the codec and format you selected; the examples below are for standard SDR H.264, not universal settings for every codec or HDR format.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
H.264 output YouTube-recommended video bitrate
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 3 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 6 Mbps

These are YouTube’s recommended video bitrates for the listed H.264 SDR modes. For other codecs, frame rates, resolutions, or output formats, use the matching row in YouTube’s encoder settings guidance rather than extrapolating from this table.

  • Rate control: CBR (constant bitrate), as YouTube recommends.
  • Keyframe interval: 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds.
  • Audio: AAC or MP3 are listed options; YouTube recommends 128 Kbps for stereo audio.

The VPS needs sustainable outbound bandwidth above the configured stream bitrate, with additional headroom for audio, protocol overhead, and variability. That is a practical capacity requirement, not a published guarantee for any OCI shape or region. Test the actual instance under sustained load.

6. Validate the stream before relying on it

Run an unlisted or private test broadcast and check the whole path from OBS to YouTube. A successful launch alone does not establish that a VPS can run continuously or recover from failures.

  • OBS opens in the display/session arrangement you chose, and the required sources are available.
  • The selected encoder sustains the target resolution and frame rate without persistent rendering or encoding lag.
  • YouTube Live Control Room receives the stream and displays a stable preview.
  • The instance’s outbound connection remains stable during a sustained test from the selected region.
  • The stream key is stored only where the OBS process needs it and is absent from public logs or screenshots.
  • You have tested what happens after a VM reboot, an OBS process exit, a lost display session, and a dropped YouTube connection—each is a separate failure case.

Document unattended recovery

For an unattended broadcast, document the process supervisor or session-start method, startup order, restart behavior, log location, alerting, and manual recovery procedure. Test each expected failure case on the instance itself. The reviewed official guidance does not establish a universal systemd, desktop, virtual-display, or YouTube configuration that guarantees recovery or uninterrupted streaming, so describe the behavior you actually verified rather than labeling it guaranteed 24/7.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely area to check What to do
OBS installs but will not open, or reports a display/graphics problem Linux display session or OpenGL availability Confirm the instance has a running X/Wayland or other tested display arrangement and meets OBS’s OpenGL 3.3 requirement. A shell-only login is not evidence that a usable display is available.
SSH no longer works after firewall changes OCI NSG/security-list rules or Ubuntu host firewall Check the OCI network rules and trusted source range. If UFW was changed on an Oracle Ubuntu platform image, use Oracle’s recovery guidance; its documentation warns firewall changes might prevent boot.
OBS starts, but YouTube shows no incoming preview Stream key, ingest selection, outbound route, or channel activation Confirm live streaming is enabled, the key is current, the OBS service uses YouTube RTMPS, and outbound connectivity is allowed. Replace the key if it may have been exposed.
YouTube reports unstable or insufficient stream health Bitrate, encoding load, or sustained egress Match the bitrate to YouTube’s row for the selected codec and output mode; test encoder load and network stability on the instance. Reduce resolution or frame rate if the chosen combination cannot sustain the target.
Stream stops after a reboot or OBS exit Startup/session orchestration or process recovery Verify the display/session starts before OBS, then test the documented restart procedure after a reboot and process exit. Do not assume installing OBS configures unattended restart.
OBS remains open but the broadcast does not resume after a disconnect Connection recovery behavior Test the exact disconnect scenario and observe whether OBS reconnects and whether YouTube accepts the resumed feed. Add an alert and a tested manual or automated recovery step if needed.
CPU or rendering/encoding lag rises during the stream Shape capacity, encoder, scene complexity, resolution, or FPS Check OBS statistics and reduce workload or choose a more capable tested shape/encoder combination. There is no evidence-based universal vCPU threshold for this job.

Copyright and YouTube policy still apply

A 24/7 broadcast does not change the rights you need for the video, music, images, or other material in the stream. Use content you own, have permission to broadcast, or are otherwise legally entitled to use, and review YouTube’s live-streaming and monetization rules for your channel. Replaying material continuously is not by itself proof that a channel meets YouTube’s monetization or reused-content requirements; those decisions depend on YouTube’s policies and review of the channel.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a continuous loop of pre-recorded video rather than a camera-based live production, StreamNeo is a simpler alternative to maintaining an OBS VPS: upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo runs the playback in its cloud; it streams to YouTube and does not go live from a camera.

  • Nothing has to stay on at home: your computer and home connection can be off.
  • Each slot streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot rather than quality tiers.
  • It can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card; one free day is available per account.

Monthly pricing: $9.99 per month. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free day.
