An eligible adult in that group then buys a Nintendo Switch Online Family Membership; the subscription follows the accounts in the group, not the console. Create or manage the group on Nintendo’s account website, invite existing account holders (or create child accounts), and verify that each person accepts the invitation and appears in the member list.
A shared Switch with several local profiles is not enough by itself. Family-group membership, subscription coverage, and parental controls are separate pieces that must be configured deliberately.

What a Nintendo Switch Online Family Membership covers
Nintendo defines a Family Membership as coverage for everyone in the purchaser’s Nintendo Account family group, with a maximum of eight Nintendo Account users. Members can use different consoles; they do not need to share a household Switch. The important link is each person’s Nintendo Account, not the number of user profiles on one system. Nintendo’s official explanation is available in Information About Nintendo Switch Online Family Memberships.
| Item | How it works |
|---|---|
| Family-group capacity | Up to 8 Nintendo Account users |
| Who receives the online service | Accounts listed in the purchaser’s Nintendo Account family group |
| Where members can play | Members may use different Nintendo Switch consoles |
| Who may purchase | A family-group member aged 18 or older |
| Who controls membership changes | The family-group administrator manages invitations and departures |
The person who pays does not have to be the administrator. Conversely, being the administrator does not automatically provide online service unless that account is also covered by a membership. A member added after purchase is covered while the family membership is active, so you can finish the group first or add people later.

Before you start: accounts, roles, and decisions
Prepare one Nintendo Account per player
Every player who needs their own saves, friends list, purchases, or online identity should use an individual Nintendo Account. A local user profile on a console is not proof that the associated Nintendo Account is in your family group. Ask each existing account holder for the email address registered to their Nintendo Account; that is the address used for the invitation.
Know the administrator’s job
The administrator creates or oversees the family group and controls who joins or leaves. Nintendo describes the available roles and permissions in What Are the Different Roles in a Nintendo Account Family Group?. Administration is an account function, not a console setting. The administrator can invite another adult, create a child account, and manage family-group membership from the account website.
Choose the subscription edition in your region
Nintendo sells a standard Nintendo Switch Online Family Membership and a Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack Family Membership. The included benefits and prices depend on your country or region and can change, so compare the options shown for your account at purchase time. Do not assume a price from another market or an older promotion applies to you. Nintendo’s family-membership overview is at Nintendo Switch Online Family Membership – Share with up to 8 accounts.
Step-by-step: create or use a family group
1. Sign in as the account that will administer the group
- Open the Nintendo Account website and sign in with the account you want to use for administration.
- If that account is not in a family group, select Create family group.
- If a group already exists, open the family-group management area and select Add a member.
Only one family group is needed for the people whose subscriptions you intend to share. Starting a second group for the same household can split accounts across memberships and make coverage appear inconsistent.
2. Invite an existing Nintendo Account
- Choose Invite someone to your family group.
- Enter the email address registered to the person’s Nintendo Account, not an address that belongs only to a console profile.
- Submit the invitation. Nintendo sends an invitation email to that address.
The invitation is pending until the account owner completes the acceptance process. Sending the email alone does not place the account in the group.

3. Have the invitee accept
- The invitee opens Nintendo’s email and follows its verification link.
- They sign in to the Nintendo Account that received the invitation.
- They choose Join family group and complete the prompts.
After acceptance, the account should appear in the administrator’s family-group member list. If it does not, check that the invitee signed in with the same Nintendo Account email that received the message, then send a fresh invitation if necessary. Nintendo’s detailed invitation and acceptance guidance is in How to Add Members to a Nintendo Account Family Group.
4. Create a child account when needed
If a child does not already have a Nintendo Account, use the family-group option to create one rather than inviting a nonexistent email account. Follow Nintendo’s prompts for the child’s details and any parental-consent steps required in your region. Consent screens and verification requirements are not identical worldwide, so complete the flow shown for your account’s country.
The new child account appears in the family group after creation. Give the child their own sign-in credentials as appropriate, but keep the supervising adult’s account secure; the adult account controls family-group administration.
5. Confirm every intended player is listed
Before buying, compare your household list with the family-group member list. Confirm the spelling of names or nicknames, the account email, and whether each person is shown as an active member rather than an outstanding invitation. A practical checklist is:
- Every player has a separate Nintendo Account or a newly created child account.
- Each existing account accepted the invitation.
- No account is still shown only as pending.
- The total is eight accounts or fewer.
- The adults know which account will make the purchase and retain access to it.
Purchase the family membership
Who can buy it
Any family-group member who is at least 18 can purchase the family membership. The buyer does not have to be the family-group administrator. Use an adult account that will remain in the group and whose payment method and email you can access.

Complete the purchase
- While signed in to the eligible adult account, open the Nintendo Switch Online membership purchase page for your region.
- Select the family edition you want: standard Family Membership or Family Expansion Pack.
- Review the displayed term, regional currency, renewal settings, and included benefits.
- Complete payment and save the confirmation email or transaction record.
The membership is associated with the purchaser’s Nintendo Account family group. It is not a code that must be entered separately on each console. After payment, have members sign in on their own consoles with the Nintendo Account that appears in the group, then test an online feature or open the Nintendo Switch Online area to confirm access.

Check coverage on every console
Use account identity as the diagnostic anchor. On a console, select the user profile linked to the covered Nintendo Account; switching to a different local profile can make a covered console appear uncovered. If a player still sees a membership prompt:
- On the Nintendo Account website, verify that the exact account is listed in the family group.
- Check whether an invitation is still pending or was accepted by a different Nintendo Account.
- On the Switch, confirm the player selected the correct user profile and that it is linked to that account.
- Close and reopen the game or Nintendo Switch Online application after the group or subscription changed.
- Allow for account-service synchronization, then test again.
Do not add a second individual subscription just because a console has several profiles. First resolve the account-to-group mismatch; local profiles do not automatically inherit family coverage.
What happens when people join or leave
Adding a member later
A family membership applies to accounts added to the purchaser’s family group while the membership remains active. The new member still must accept an invitation (or be created as a child account) and appear in the group. There is no need to buy a separate membership for that account once the group update is complete.
When the purchaser leaves
If the purchaser leaves the family group, other members can lose Nintendo Switch Online benefits, including Save Data Cloud backup, until another valid source of coverage is established. The departing purchaser also loses the family coverage. Plan any transfer or group change before the account that paid for the membership exits.

When a member leaves
An account that leaves the family group is no longer covered by that family membership. Its console, games, and local user profile remain, but Nintendo Switch Online features tied to the account may stop working after coverage ends. Rejoining a family group or obtaining an individual membership restores eligibility; it does not merge the account with anyone else’s data.
Points and activity stay separate
Family grouping does not merge members’ My Nintendo points, purchase history, or activity. Each Nintendo Account keeps its own identity and records. The group shares subscription eligibility, not account data.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Existing individual memberships and overlapping terms
If an account already has an active individual Nintendo Switch Online membership and is then covered by a family membership, Nintendo says the periods are not added together. The account receives the longest applicable period rather than a combined extension. Check the account’s membership status and end date before buying another plan.
Nintendo also states that an account covered by an active family membership cannot buy or redeem an individual membership code. If you intend to use an individual code, resolve the family coverage and timing first instead of assuming the code will stack.
Parental controls are a separate setup
Joining a family group and buying Nintendo Switch Online does not configure child-safety settings. Nintendo separates account-level family-group restrictions from controls applied on the console and through the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls smart-device app. Its overview, How to Set Up, Adjust, or Remove Parental Controls on Nintendo Switch, explains the distinct control surfaces.
Best Value
Family-group account restrictions
Use the family-group settings for restrictions that belong to a child’s Nintendo Account, such as supervision and account-management permissions. The exact options and consent flow can vary by region, so use the labels shown after signing in.
Console restrictions
Console controls can limit functions for users of that Switch. Nintendo notes that many parental controls are system-wide: a restriction set on the console can affect everyone who uses it, not only the child’s profile. Decide whether a rule should apply to the entire device before enabling it.
Smart-device app features
The Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app provides features such as play-time limits and gameplay history. These are separate from the family membership itself. A parent or guardian who is eligible in the family group can share responsibility for parental controls using the process described in How to Share Responsibility for Parental Controls using the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls App.

Troubleshooting common setup failures
The invitation never arrives
- Ask the recipient to check spam, junk, and filtered folders.
- Verify the address matches the Nintendo Account email exactly.
- Confirm the recipient has not already accepted the invitation under another account.
- From family-group management, send a new invitation and use the latest email.
The invitee cannot join
The recipient must open the verification link, sign in, and choose Join family group. If the browser is signed in to a different Nintendo Account, sign out and repeat the link with the invited account. Regional eligibility or consent prompts may also stop the process until the required adult approval is completed.
A player is listed but still has no online access
Check that the player’s console profile is linked to the listed Nintendo Account, not merely using the same nickname. Confirm the membership is active on the purchasing account and that the player has not left the group. Restart the software after correcting the account link.
The family has more than eight accounts
Nintendo’s stated limit is eight Nintendo Account users per family group. Decide which accounts need coverage, keep the intended members in the group, and arrange another valid membership for accounts that cannot fit. Do not rely on multiple local profiles to bypass the group limit.
A child’s restrictions affect adults
Review the console-level settings. Because many controls are system-wide, a rule configured on the Switch may apply to every profile. Move account-specific supervision to the family-group controls where available, and adjust the console or app settings for the shared device.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSafe handoff and maintenance checklist
- Keep the purchasing adult’s Nintendo Account email, password, and two-step verification method current.
- Review the family-group list whenever someone changes consoles, email addresses, or household arrangements.
- Before removing the purchaser, establish who will maintain the active membership and understand the coverage interruption risk.
- Check renewal dates and regional pricing on Nintendo’s current purchase screen instead of relying on an old receipt.
- For children, review both family-group supervision and the console/app rules after a device reset or replacement.
- When troubleshooting, test with the exact Nintendo Account that should be covered, not only the console owner’s profile.
The shortest reliable setup path
For a typical household, the sequence is: create or open one Nintendo Account family group; invite each existing account and wait for acceptance; create child accounts where needed; verify that every intended player appears in the member list; have an adult group member purchase the appropriate Family Membership for the local region; then test each account on its own console profile. Treat parental controls as a separate pass, because subscription sharing does not set them up for you.
