To get motion alerts on your phone, enable detection and push alerts in the camera’s app, allow that app to send notifications in your phone’s settings, and confirm the camera’s active mode or schedule permits alerts. Then choose the events and areas you want to monitor, and test the setup. Menu names and available features vary by camera, app, phone, and subscription.
Before you start: check the camera and its app
Use the app that controls the camera, sign in, and select the correct device. Confirm it is online. Some systems stop sending push notifications when you are logged out. Set up alerts separately for each camera if the app requires it; Google Home, for example, handles alerts per camera.

There are two separate gates: the camera must detect and be configured to report an event, and the phone must permit the app to deliver notifications. A motion-detection toggle alone does not guarantee a phone alert.
Turn on detection and push alerts
Look in the camera’s settings for sections named Notifications, Alerts, Motion Detection, Events, Rules, or Routines. The exact path depends on the brand. For example, Google Home offers alert choices in a camera’s notification settings; Arlo configures detection and notifications through device rules associated with a mode.

- Check the active mode. Confirm the mode, routine, or schedule currently in effect allows detection and notifications. An Arlo rule only applies when its selected mode is armed; other systems may use schedules or home/away states.
Allow notifications in your phone’s settings
Even a correctly configured camera cannot send a visible alert if the phone blocks notifications from its app. In Android, Arlo documents this path: Settings → Notifications → App notifications → Arlo Secure. Make sure notifications are allowed. Other Android versions and camera apps may use different labels.
On iPhone, allow notifications for the camera app in iOS settings. If you use Apple Home with a compatible camera, Apple’s camera-alert controls are in Home → Home Settings → Cameras & Doorbells → [camera] → Activity Notifications. Labels and available options can vary with the iOS version and camera.

Limit alerts to the useful part of the camera’s view
Use a motion or activity zone, when available, to include the doorway, driveway, or other area that matters and exclude busy streets or sidewalks. Zone behavior is not identical across systems: Google Activity Zones can suppress alerts for activity inside a zone while preserving alerts elsewhere, and Apple HomeKit Secure Video Activity Zones do not change motion-detection automations.
Adjust sensitivity in small steps. Lowering it may reduce unwanted alerts; raising it may help with missed movement. Re-aiming the camera or changing the zone can be more effective than making the detector broadly less or more sensitive. Ring lists motion zones, sensitivity, schedules, and Motion Frequency as distinct controls. Its Smart Alerts require a Ring subscription, according to Ring’s support page.

Changing light, moving shadows, swaying plants, and headlights can trigger unwanted detections. Review what is actually in the camera’s view before changing settings, and check for privacy zones or obstructions that might exclude the area you want monitored.
Test the setup
- Walk through the monitored area or create another safe, visible motion event.
- Check the camera app’s event history to see whether the camera recorded the event.
- Confirm that the phone received a push alert for it.
If the event appears in history but no notification arrives, focus first on alert settings, the active mode, and the phone’s app notification permission. If no event appears, check detection, camera connection, schedule, zones, camera aim, and privacy settings.
Troubleshoot missed, unwanted, or delayed alerts
| What happens | What to check |
|---|---|
| No event appears in history | Confirm the camera is online, detection is enabled, the intended mode is active, the schedule allows monitoring, and the target area is in view and not excluded by a zone or privacy setting. |
| Event is recorded, but there is no phone alert | Check in-app push settings, the selected event types, the active mode or schedule, and the phone’s notification permission for the camera app. For Arlo, confirm the app is signed in. |
| Alerts report irrelevant movement | Adjust camera aim or zones, filter event types if available, lower sensitivity gradually, or revise the schedule. Look for shadows, changing light, vegetation, and headlights. |
| Alerts arrive late | For Nest alerts, Google recommends checking whether another device signed into the same home receives them and, if needed, testing with a different network. |
For brand-specific steps, consult the official instructions for Google Home and Nest camera alerts, Arlo push notifications, Arlo Android notification permissions, Ring Motion Detection, and Apple Home security camera setup. Google also provides troubleshooting for Nest camera alerts; Arlo explains ways to receive fewer notifications.
