In OBS Studio, open the Filters for the microphone you actually use, then add only the processing your audio needs: suppression for mild steady noise, a gate or expander for noise between phrases, and compression or limiting for peaks. There is no universal preset—tune by listening to your microphone in your room, then test an unlisted stream before going live.
How do I set up mic filters in OBS for YouTube?
- Improve the sound before processing it. Choose the quietest practical location and address steady sources such as a fan, appliance, traffic, or wind. A microphone can improve audio for YouTube streams, but filters cannot fully compensate for loud environmental noise or poor mic placement. YouTube’s filming tips recommends using a microphone for better audio.
- Select the right input. In OBS Studio, find the microphone/auxiliary channel in the Audio Mixer, open its gear menu, and choose Filters. Alternatively, right-click the microphone source in the Sources list and choose Filters. OBS allows filters on sources, audio devices, and scenes. Speak and check that the input you selected shows activity; filters on the wrong source will not affect the intended microphone.
- Add a filter only when it addresses an audible problem. Use the + in the Filters window to choose from OBS’s audio filters, including Noise Suppression, Noise Gate, Expander, Compressor, Gain, and Limiter. Start with the relevant filter below rather than stacking several strong effects.
- Listen, adjust, and save. Speak at your usual distance and volume while monitoring the result. Adjust one control at a time; listen for damaged or muffled voice, clipped syllables, abrupt cutoffs, sudden level changes, or pumping.
- Test the actual broadcast path. Make a local recording or create an unlisted live stream. YouTube recommends testing audio, video, and equipment with an unlisted stream; its encoder guidance also recommends a test that includes audio and movement similar to the real broadcast. Check the preview and stream health before making the stream public.
These menu instructions and filter behaviors are for OBS Studio. Filter names and availability may differ in other encoders or hardware mixers.

Which OBS filter should I use?

How do I stop background noise on a live stream?
Start with the room and microphone
Move away from steady noise where possible and use a sensible speaking distance. A USB or other external microphone is an option if you do not have a suitable mic; YouTube lists external microphones among typical encoder-stream equipment. Changing the noise source or mic placement is often more effective than trying to remove loud noise with filters.

Try suppression for mild, steady noise
OBS describes Noise Suppression as a way to remove mild background or white noise. Choose the filter on the microphone source and compare the result while speaking. If you use RNNoise, OBS says it is higher quality but uses more CPU than Speex. Speex has an adjustable suppression level; stronger suppression can distort the voice. Reduce the strength or remove the filter if speech becomes robotic, watery, or muffled. OBS notes that suppression is generally not effective against large amounts of background noise in a loud room.

Should I use a noise gate or an expander?
Use a gate when you want the mic to close during silence and the cutoff can be made unobtrusive. Choose an expander when you want quieter sounds reduced more gradually. OBS explains that an expander’s adjustable ratio can produce a smoother open and close than a gate’s fixed behavior.
Set gate thresholds against your actual levels
OBS’s guidance is to set the gate’s close threshold above the room’s noise floor and its open threshold slightly below your voice level. Speak softly as well as at your normal level while tuning: if the gate opens late or closes on a quiet syllable, adjust the thresholds rather than accepting the cutoff.

Use the expander figures as starting points only
OBS’s Expander documentation suggests a 4:1 ratio as a possible balance, an attack of 5–10 ms, and a release of 50–120 ms. These are starting values, not a preset guaranteed to suit every microphone or voice. Raise the threshold cautiously; if speech is cut off, lower it.

How do I stop my microphone from clipping?
Use compression for loud peaks
A compressor reduces the level of louder parts of your voice. OBS recommends placing it near the beginning of the filter chain. Listen for more consistent speech without abrupt level changes or pumping; if the voice sounds unnatural, ease the processing.

Put the limiter last
OBS recommends placing a limiter at the end of the chain to prevent peaks from exceeding its threshold. A limiter cannot restore audio that was already clipped before processing, so also check your input level and listen for distorted syllables in a recording or test stream. The cited guidance does not establish a universal YouTube loudness target for microphone filters.
Common microphone-filter problems and fixes
- The filter seems to do nothing: Confirm that you opened Filters for the input showing activity when you speak, not a different microphone, desktop-audio source, or scene.
- Speech sounds robotic, watery, or muffled: Reduce Noise Suppression strength or disable it. If the room is loud, address the noise source or mic placement instead of increasing suppression.
- First or last syllables disappear: The gate may be closing too aggressively, or the expander threshold may be too high. Recheck thresholds while speaking at your quietest normal level.
- The mic is noisy only between phrases: Try a gate for a clear off/on cutoff or an expander for more gradual reduction. Tune so quiet speech still comes through.
- Voice level surges or sounds squeezed: Reduce compressor processing and retest. A limiter should catch final peaks, not produce an obviously unnatural voice.
- The problem appears only on the live broadcast: Make an unlisted test and inspect the preview and stream health. Check the full path from microphone through OBS to YouTube rather than relying only on the local meter.
