The most practical way to run Linux on an Android phone is to install Termux and create a Linux userland with PRoot. Android remains installed and continues to provide the kernel; the Linux distribution runs inside Termux. You can use the command line only, or add a graphical desktop through Termux:X11 or a VNC viewer.
Choose a terminal-only setup if you need Linux utilities, shells, scripts or development packages. Choose a desktop setup only if you need Linux graphical applications and have enough memory, storage and a phone that can keep the background processes alive.

What this setup actually does
Linux on an Android phone is usually a container-like userland, not a replacement operating system. Termux supplies the Android application environment, while PRoot makes a distribution such as Ubuntu or Debian appear to have its own filesystem and package environment. The underlying Android kernel is still in control. The proot-distro documentation describes this approach as working without root, a kernel module or a Docker daemon.

Choose the right installation path
| Path | Best for | How it works | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
Termux with proot-distro |
Readers comfortable with a terminal who want control | You install a distribution, log into it and manage the environment with commands | More manual decisions and troubleshooting |
| Andronix with Termux | Readers who want a guided installer and selectable desktops | The app generates and runs an installation command that downloads and unpacks a distribution | Less manual control over the guided choices |
| Desktop over Termux:X11 or VNC | Graphical Linux applications | A desktop environment runs in the userland and is displayed through an Android client | Higher RAM and storage use, plus more compatibility issues |
Both routes use the same basic PRoot model, so neither turns the phone into a fully independent Linux computer. The choice is mainly between a manual command-line workflow and a guided installer; add a desktop only when the terminal is not enough.
Check the phone before installing
Andronix publishes the following requirements for its current command-line and desktop procedures. They are project guidance, not independent performance benchmarks or guarantees for every phone.
| Check | Command-line environment | Desktop environment | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Android version | Android 7 or newer | Android 7 or newer | The Google Play build of Termux requires Android 11 or newer according to the Andronix guide. |
| Free storage | About 0.5 GB | About 1.5–2 GB | KDE Plasma may need about 3 GB. |
| RAM | 2 GB | 3 GB or more is comfortable | KDE Plasma calls for 4 GB RAM. |
| CPU architecture | Usually arm64 on modern phones, but distribution support varies | The installer checks whether the selected distribution supports the device. | |
Leave additional free space for downloaded archives, package caches and your own files. A device that barely meets the figures can install successfully but become uncomfortable when a desktop, browser or several applications are open at once.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Android 12 and newer can stop long-running background applications. That can terminate a shell session or desktop after you switch away from Termux. Some older kernels also show a black desktop even though the command line works; Andronix specifically identifies some Android 9 phones using a 4.4 kernel as a known black-screen case. These are compatibility warnings, not a guarantee that every phone on a named Android release will behave identically.
Install Linux with Termux using the guided route
Andronix provides a guided route for selecting a distribution and, optionally, a desktop. Its current project listing includes Debian 13, Ubuntu 26.04 and 24.04, Kali rolling, Fedora 44, Arch Linux ARM rolling, Manjaro ARM stable, Alpine 3.24 and Void rolling. Those labels are the versions listed by the project and may change as distributions release new versions.
1. Install Termux from a supported source
- Install Termux from F-Droid, the Termux GitHub releases or Google Play. If you use the Google Play build referenced by the Andronix guide, the phone must run Android 11 or newer.
- Open Termux once and wait for its base packages and initial filesystem setup to finish. Do not close it while that first setup is running.
- Install and open Andronix, then grant only the Android permissions the installation workflow actually requests.
Using a current Termux build matters because Android packages and repository support can differ between distribution channels. Keep the installation source consistent rather than mixing add-ons from unrelated Termux builds.

2. Select a distribution and desktop
In Andronix, choose the distribution you want and then select a desktop environment or the No desktop option. XFCE, LXQt and MATE are listed for all of the project’s distributions. KDE Plasma is listed for Debian, Ubuntu 26.04 and Kali and requires 4 GB RAM according to the project documentation.
A terminal-only installation is the sensible first test on a marginal phone. It uses less space and memory and lets you confirm that the distribution starts before adding the extra display and desktop layers.
3. Run the generated command in Termux
Copy the command Andronix generates, switch to Termux and paste it at the shell prompt. The setup page gives this Ubuntu/XFCE example:
curl -fsSL https://dl.andronix.app/get.sh -o $PREFIX/tmp/get.sh && sh $PREFIX/tmp/get.sh install ubuntu --de xfce
The script downloads and unpacks the selected userland and installs the selected desktop when one was chosen. Keep the phone awake and connected to a reliable network until the command completes. The exact command changes with the distribution and desktop selections, so use the generated command rather than substituting the example blindly.
4. Start the environment
For a graphical installation, run:
andronix desktop
That command opens the desktop through Termux:X11 when the corresponding display path is installed. A VNC viewer is another documented display option; it is useful when your chosen workflow is based on a VNC server and client rather than X11.

For a no-desktop installation, use the shell entry command shown by the installer. The result should be a prompt belonging to the selected Linux userland rather than the normal Termux prompt. Keep the two prompts distinct when copying commands: a command intended for Android’s Termux shell may not be the same as one intended for the Linux distribution.

5. Update the Andronix installation
Andronix documents this update command for its installer-managed setup:
andronix update
Run it from the Termux side of the installation as documented by the project. Distribution package updates are a separate task handled inside the Linux userland with that distribution’s own package manager.
Install Linux manually with Termux and proot-distro
The manual route is smaller and more transparent. It is documented in the proot-distro README and does not require the Andronix interface.
1. Install the manager
pkg install proot-distro
Run this in the normal Termux shell. If Termux asks to confirm package installation, accept only after checking that you are using a current, supported Termux repository.
2. Install a distribution image
proot-distro install ubuntu:24.04
The tag in this example identifies Ubuntu 24.04. Available images and tags can change, so check the current project documentation when an image is unavailable or you need a different release. The manual route gives you direct control over the image name but does not remove the architectural and kernel limits of PRoot.
3. Log in
proot-distro login ubuntu
A successful login presents the distribution’s filesystem and shell. From there, use the package manager and configuration files belonging to that distribution. Termux remains outside the userland, so files, environment variables and installed packages are not automatically interchangeable between the two contexts.

4. Remove an environment you no longer need
proot-distro remove ubuntu

Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Add a graphical Linux desktop
A graphical desktop requires three layers: the Linux userland, a desktop environment and a display client. Installing only Ubuntu, Debian or another distribution does not automatically create a usable Android window.
Termux:X11
Andronix’s documented desktop workflow uses Termux:X11. Install the compatible Termux:X11 component for your Termux channel, start the display application, then run the project’s desktop command:
andronix desktop
The desktop should appear in the X11 display window rather than replacing Android’s launcher. If the command starts but no window appears, verify that the X11 application is running and that the desktop command belongs to the same installation you configured.
VNC
A VNC viewer is an alternative display path documented by Andronix. In that arrangement, the Linux userland runs a VNC server and the Android VNC client displays the session. VNC adds another service and connection setting, so it is not automatically lighter than X11, but it can be convenient when an X11 setup is incompatible with a particular phone.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

- LXQt: also listed for all of the project’s distributions and designed around a relatively light desktop workflow.
- MATE: listed for all of the project’s distributions and offers a conventional desktop layout.
- KDE Plasma: listed for Debian, Ubuntu 26.04 and Kali; the project calls for 4 GB RAM and about 3 GB of storage.
These are availability and requirement statements from the Andronix project, not a promise of identical speed on every processor or Android build.

What you can realistically use Linux for
A PRoot userland is well suited to command-line tools, shell scripting, text-based development utilities, language runtimes and many ordinary user-space packages. A desktop can make lightweight Linux graphical applications accessible from the phone when the display layer and memory are adequate.
It is not a reliable substitute for a rooted phone, a native Linux installation or a desktop PC. PRoot does not provide a new kernel or unrestricted access to Android hardware. A program that assumes a particular kernel interface, privileged device node, hardware accelerator or low-level network capability can fail even when its files are present.
PRoot limitations you should plan around
The Andronix limitations documentation identifies several boundaries that are easy to miss when a distribution appears to work normally.
Recommended Free Tools
- Kernel-dependent software: applications that require kernel features unavailable through Android may not run.
- Large compilation jobs: substantial builds can fail or become impractical because of resource limits and the PRoot layer.
- Container runtimes: Docker, Snap and Flatpak are not supported in the documented PRoot environment.
- Hardware and storage access: the environment cannot freely mount or read drives and adapters, and Linux cannot be installed on external storage through this method.
- Networking: you cannot change network properties freely from inside the userland or use a VPN from inside the container as though it controlled Android’s network stack.
- Graphics: hardware acceleration is limited, so demanding 3D applications and GPU-dependent workflows should not be expected to behave like they do on a native Linux installation.
Do not buy a USB drive, hub or external storage on the assumption that it is required or will solve these limits. The documented restrictions concern the PRoot model itself.
Troubleshoot the common failure modes
The installer fails before creating a distribution
- Check free storage against the selected desktop’s requirement, including room for the downloaded archive and temporary extraction files.
- Confirm the phone’s CPU architecture is supported by the selected image. Most modern phones are arm64, but not every distribution publishes the same architecture builds.
- Keep Termux open and prevent the phone from entering aggressive battery-saving mode during the download.
- If a distribution tag is rejected by
proot-distro, consult the current README for the image names and tags instead of guessing a replacement.
The command line works but the desktop is a black screen
First test the command-line login; this separates the Linux userland from the display layer. Then confirm that Termux:X11 or the VNC viewer is running and that the desktop command matches the installed environment. Older Android kernels can produce a black screen even when the shell is functional; some Android 9 devices with a 4.4 kernel are specifically called out by Andronix.
The session disappears after switching apps
Android 12 and newer may stop long-running background applications. Keep Termux in the foreground while installing or compiling, disable battery optimization for Termux where your phone’s settings provide that option, and avoid treating a backgrounded desktop as a persistent server.
The desktop is too slow or closes unexpectedly
- Use a terminal-only installation or choose XFCE, LXQt or MATE instead of KDE Plasma.
- Close Android applications before launching the desktop and leave more storage available for temporary files.
- Reduce the number of graphical applications open at once; the published RAM figures are minimum guidance, not a performance guarantee.
A Linux application says a feature is unavailable
Check whether it depends on Docker, Snap, Flatpak, hardware acceleration, direct device access, external mounts, privileged networking or a specific kernel feature. If it does, the failure is likely a PRoot limitation rather than a missing package. Moving the same application to a native Linux machine or a properly virtualized environment is the appropriate workaround.
Quick Recap
Security and maintenance habits
- Install Termux and any companion components from a consistent, current source; mixing builds can create incompatible packages.
- Use distribution package repositories and verify commands before pasting scripts from elsewhere.
- Keep personal files outside an environment you plan to remove, or copy them out before uninstalling the distribution.
- Remember that a Linux userland does not isolate you from Android’s security model. Android permissions, the Termux app’s access and the PRoot filesystem all affect what a command can reach.
- Do not treat a PRoot desktop as a secure replacement for Android’s lock screen, device encryption or application sandboxing.
Which setup should you choose?
| Your goal | Recommended starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Run shell tools, scripts or compilers | Termux plus proot-distro, with no desktop |
Lowest overhead and the clearest manual control |
| Install Linux with fewer shell decisions | Andronix plus Termux, no desktop first | The guided workflow selects a distribution and generates the install command |
| Use a light graphical application | Andronix with XFCE, LXQt or MATE through Termux:X11 | These desktops are listed across the project’s distributions and avoid KDE’s higher published requirement |
| Try KDE Plasma | Andronix with Debian, Ubuntu 26.04 or Kali, only on a phone with at least 4 GB RAM | KDE is restricted to those listed distributions and has the highest stated memory and storage requirements |
| Use Docker, Snap, Flatpak, direct USB storage or GPU-heavy software | Use a native Linux computer or another environment designed for that workload | Those requirements conflict with documented PRoot limitations |
Final checklist
- Decide whether you need a terminal or a desktop.
- Confirm Android version, CPU architecture, available storage, RAM and the phone’s background-process behavior.
- Install Termux from F-Droid, GitHub or Google Play, observing the Android 11 requirement for the Google Play build noted by Andronix.
- Use Andronix for a guided distribution and desktop selection, or install
proot-distromanually. - Test the command line before adding a desktop display path.
- Use Termux:X11 or VNC for graphics, and choose a desktop appropriate to available memory.
- Keep expectations within PRoot’s boundaries: Android’s kernel remains underneath, and hardware, networking, container-runtime and acceleration access is limited.
