Choose the location and daylight first
Time of day, weather, season, and the sun’s position all affect the light available to your camera. If possible, avoid placing a face under hard midday sun, which can produce deep shadows and bright highlights. Nikon’s guide to simple video lighting setups recommends considering the sun as a key, fill, or backlight rather than treating it as a problem to eliminate.

Try side light or backlight
Set the camera and subject, then assess whether the sun can fall to one side or behind the subject. Backlight can create separation from the background, but check the face and bright areas in the camera preview: a bright sky behind the subject can make the face look too dark. Godox demonstrates using the sun behind a subject for dimension in its exterior daylight lighting example.

Soften or bounce harsh sunlight
If the face has hard shadows, move the subject into open shade or bounce sunlight back toward the shadowed side with a reflector. If direct sunlight remains too harsh, diffusion can soften it; secure the frame or stand against the conditions at your location. A reflector needs no electrical power, but positioning it well may take a helper or stable support. Godox’s daylight example uses a collapsible diffuser; neither a diffuser nor a reflector replaces checking exposure in the live preview.

Add an LED only when natural light is not enough
A powered light can help when shade, changing weather, or the available time of day leaves the face too dim. There is no universal wattage threshold for overpowering sunlight: usable output depends on the fixture, distance, modifier, and brightness of the ambient conditions. Choose based on the light you can actually put on the subject, not a wattage number in isolation.
Build a simple lighting arrangement after dark
Think in roles rather than assuming you need a three-light kit. The key light establishes the subject, fill controls the contrast of shadows, and backlight or background lighting helps separate the subject from the scene. The sun, a reflector, or practical background lights can perform some of these roles; they do not all require dedicated fixtures.

Start with a soft key
Place a soft key near the camera, slightly to one side if you want facial shape. A softbox can soften a fixture, although diffusion reduces output; distance and the darkness of the surroundings affect how much light reaches the subject. This placement is a practical starting point, not a fixed angle that suits every face or camera.

If the key leaves the shadow side too dark, add a lower-level fill there or use a reflector to return some of the key light. Keep the fill less dominant than the key if you want the face to retain shape. In its camping livestream example, Godox uses a softbox key and a softbox fill; that is one manufacturer’s example, not a required equipment list.

Separate the subject from a dark background
If the subject blends into the background, add a restrained backlight or illuminate part of the background. Godox’s camping setup uses tube lights behind the subject and small practical fairy or camping lights to give the scene depth. Keep those lights from competing with the face, and check their balance in the camera preview as ambient light changes.
Match color and check the camera image
Set the camera’s white balance to suit the dominant light, and keep controllable fixtures consistent with one another where possible. Nikon gives roughly 5600 K as a daylight-effect reference and roughly 3200 K for a warmer look. These are starting points, not mandatory outdoor settings: sky, shade, fixture color, and the look you want all affect the right choice.

Before going live, inspect the actual camera preview for face exposure, background highlights, shadow detail, mixed color casts, and flicker. The cited lighting guidance does not establish camera-specific exposure or anti-flicker settings, so check the camera manual and the local power frequency for those controls.

When comparing fixtures, prioritize usable output at your distance and ambient brightness, power-input and battery compatibility, runtime at your planned brightness, color-temperature control, modifier compatibility, weight, setup time, and stable mounting. These are practical selection factors, not results from a controlled product comparison.

Plan power and outdoor safety
Estimate runtime for the actual load: check each fixture’s rated draw and input requirements, confirm that the battery plate or voltage matches, and allow for conversion losses. Battery capacity, brightness, and the number of lights all affect how long a setup can run.
Godox says the portable power stations and V-mount batteries in its camping example supported its lights for about three to four hours, and notes adding batteries for longer operation. That figure applies to that example only; it is not a general runtime estimate for other lights or brightness settings.
- Stabilize stands and modifiers for the site and weather.
- Route cables to avoid trip hazards.
- Keep electrical equipment within its rated use and verify manufacturer specifications before exposing it to rain or damp conditions. The cited example does not state weatherproof ratings for its lights.
