Run at least two web nodes in separate Availability Zones, place a health-checked application load balancer in front of them, keep files outside the nodes, use a MySQL-compatible database with automatic failover, and add tested backups and recovery procedures. For a regional outage, maintain a replicated secondary environment and route traffic there with health-checked DNS or a global load balancer.

This design removes single points of failure, but it does not create a universal uptime guarantee. Your actual recovery time objective (RTO), recovery point objective (RPO), traffic pattern, consistency requirements and budget determine which components must be redundant and how you operate them.

What “high availability” means for WordPress
A highly available WordPress site continues serving requests when an individual process, server, Availability Zone or, with additional preparation, an entire region fails. The goal is controlled interruption and predictable recovery rather than pretending failures will never occur.
RTO and RPO come first
- RTO (recovery time objective): the maximum acceptable time before the site is usable again. Automatic replacement of one web node can be nearly invisible; promoting a database in another region normally takes longer.
- RPO (recovery point objective): the maximum acceptable amount of data loss. Synchronous or managed local replication can minimize loss, while asynchronous cross-region replication may leave a replication gap.
- Failure scope: decide whether you are protecting against a crashed process, a node, an Availability Zone, or a regional disaster. Each larger scope requires more duplicated infrastructure and more operational testing.
Write these objectives down before selecting services. A site that can tolerate an hour of downtime and several minutes of lost content needs a different design from a store that cannot lose a completed order.

Reference architecture: separate every failure domain
Keep traffic routing, web execution, files, database, cache and recovery independent. A typical flow is edge service to load balancer, then to multiple WordPress nodes, with shared storage and a managed database behind them.
| Layer | Typical implementation | Failure behavior |
|---|---|---|
| Edge | CDN with TLS termination, WAF rules and static caching | Absorbs cacheable traffic and blocks some attacks before the origin |
| Traffic routing | Application load balancer with health checks | Stops sending requests to unhealthy nodes |
| Web tier | Two or more identical instances or containers in separate zones | Another node serves requests while a failed node is replaced |
| File layer | Distributed shared file system, or object storage for static assets | Files remain available when a web node disappears |
| Database | Managed MySQL-compatible cluster with replicas and automatic promotion | Writer failure is handled by the database service |
| Object cache | Multi-node Redis-compatible service where needed | Reduces database load; cache can be rebuilt after loss |
| Recovery | Backups, cross-region copies and an exercised runbook | Restores service after corruption or a broad outage |
AWS’s documented design combines CloudFront, S3, an Application Load Balancer, EC2 Auto Scaling, ElastiCache, Aurora MySQL and EFS. Microsoft’s App Service design combines Front Door, App Service, Blob Storage and Azure Database for MySQL with a standby. An AKS-based design uses Front Door, shared Azure NetApp Files, managed Redis and MySQL high availability. These are patterns, not a requirement to use one vendor.
Plan the build before deploying servers
Inventory what WordPress actually stores
List the WordPress core version, PHP version, web server configuration, themes, plugins, uploads, scheduled jobs, configuration values, salts, certificates and any local files created by plugins. Identify which plugins write to disk or depend on local sessions. A second node is not equivalent to the first until this inventory is reproducible.
Choose zones, regions and a budget
Place nodes in at least two independent zones in the primary region. A regional design needs a second region with replicated data and either a warm environment or a pilot-light stack that can be expanded during an incident. Duplicating zones, databases, storage and monitoring increases baseline spend; managed services reduce clustering and patching work but can increase provider dependence.
Define ownership and incident authority
Document who may declare a regional incident, who fences writes, who changes DNS or global routing, and who validates the recovered site. Without an explicit authority, two environments can accept writes at the same time and create split-brain data.
Step-by-step implementation
1. Make WordPress reproducible
- Put infrastructure definitions, web-server configuration, PHP settings and deployment scripts in version control.
- Build an immutable image or container containing the approved PHP runtime, web server, WordPress core and approved plugins. Pin versions rather than downloading arbitrary updates at boot.
- Store database passwords, salts, API keys and certificates in a managed secret store. Inject them at runtime; do not commit them to an image or repository.
- Define startup checks that verify the expected WordPress version, required PHP extensions, mounted storage and database reachability before the node is marked ready.
When a node can be recreated from code and configuration, autoscaling and disaster recovery no longer depend on manually copying a server.

2. Deploy a stateless web tier
- Create at least two nodes in separate Availability Zones or equivalent failure domains.
- Attach them to an application load balancer. Configure the balancer to remove failed targets and add replacements automatically.
- Keep the document root and runtime configuration identical on every node. Do not make an emergency edit on one machine and assume the others changed.
- Set session handling so a user can move between nodes. Prefer centrally stored sessions or stateless authentication; avoid relying on one node’s local session directory.
AWS specifically recommends an Application Load Balancer for HTTP or HTTPS WordPress traffic. Its scaling guidance describes health checks that remove failed instances from rotation.
3. Create a useful health endpoint
The load balancer needs a fast endpoint that represents real readiness. A check of /wp-login.php can confirm that PHP is being served, as AWS notes, but it does not prove that the database, shared files or critical dependencies work. For production decisions, use a custom endpoint that:
- returns success only when the web process and required PHP extensions are available;
- performs a short, read-only database connection test;
- confirms the shared storage or object-storage path is accessible;
- does not trigger a login, write, expensive query or cache purge; and
- returns failure quickly enough for the balancer’s timeout and interval.
Use a separate deep diagnostic check for monitoring. Do not expose credentials, stack traces or infrastructure details in the public response.
4. Externalize WordPress files
Every node must see the same themes, plugins and uploads. You have two main patterns:
PC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute- Shared file storage: place the WordPress installation or at least
wp-contenton a distributed file system and mount it on each node. AWS documents moving the installation directory to EFS so it is independent of any one EC2 instance. - Object storage and a CDN: keep immutable static assets in object storage and deliver them through an edge service. This can reduce file-system contention, but plugins must be compatible with offloaded media and you still need a controlled deployment location for PHP code and plugin files.
Whichever pattern you select, standardize ownership, group permissions, UID/GID mapping, mount options and encryption. Test an upload on node A, retrieve it through node B and verify that a replacement node sees it without manual copying. Do not use local disk for uploads that must survive node loss.
5. Use a failover-capable database
- Create a managed MySQL-compatible cluster with a primary writer and replicas placed in separate failure domains.
- Configure WordPress with the provider’s stable writer or cluster endpoint, not a single instance hostname. The endpoint should continue identifying the current writer after promotion.
- Set connection and query timeouts, then verify that the application retries safely after a dropped connection. A retry must not duplicate a non-idempotent operation such as an order or form submission.
- Run a planned failover in a staging environment and observe connection errors, DNS refresh behavior, PHP workers and background jobs.
AWS states that Aurora automatically fails over between a primary and replicas and recommends the cluster endpoint for application connections. Its 2026 whitepaper gives “typically less than 30 seconds” as a vendor-stated failover time; treat that as an indicative value, not a guarantee for your workload or region.

6. Add object caching deliberately
A multi-node Redis-compatible cache can reduce repeated database work and improve response times. Keep cache keys, eviction policy and serialization consistent across nodes. Design for cache loss: the site should rebuild cached values from durable data rather than fail when the cache is empty. Review plugins that store sessions, locks or queues in Redis, because a cache restart can affect those functions differently from ordinary page caching.
7. Put a CDN and security controls at the edge
Use a CDN or edge service in front of the load balancer for static caching, TLS certificates and web-application-firewall rules. CloudFront is part of AWS’s reference architecture; Azure Front Door is used in Microsoft’s App Service and AKS designs. Configure cache rules so personalized pages, administrator responses and preview URLs are not publicly cached. Purge or version assets after deployments instead of relying on every edge location expiring at the same instant.
Azure documents that Front Door can serve cached responses while an origin is temporarily unavailable. That can preserve cached pages, but it is not a replacement for redundant origins, durable data and a recovery plan.
8. Automate replacement and scaling
Use an autoscaling group or orchestrator to replace unhealthy nodes from the immutable image. Scale on request rate, latency, CPU and memory, not CPU alone; PHP workers can be exhausted while CPU appears moderate. Set minimum capacity so one node can fail without taking the service below its target. Ensure deployments drain connections, remove a node from the balancer, migrate or stop scheduled jobs safely, then add the new version.
Backups and recovery are part of availability
Redundancy does not protect against accidental deletion, corrupted content, compromised credentials or a bad deployment. Back up and restore each stateful layer:
- database contents, including users, orders, comments and plugin tables;
- uploads and other user-generated files;
- themes, plugins and any custom code not reproducible from version control;
- WordPress configuration, secrets references, certificates and DNS or routing definitions; and
- infrastructure definitions and the exact image or container versions used in production.
Keep copies in a separate account, project or region with access controls that an application credential cannot overwrite. Encryption keys and their recovery procedures must be documented. A backup is unproven until a restore produces a working site; schedule restore drills and record the measured RTO and RPO.

Designing regional failover
Choose warm standby or pilot light
A warm standby keeps a scaled-down but serving environment in the secondary region. It costs more but shortens promotion. A pilot light keeps core definitions and replicated data ready while most compute capacity is started during an incident. It costs less but adds startup and validation time.
Replicate data and files
Replicate the database asynchronously unless your chosen service supports a consistency model that meets your objectives. Replicate uploads and other durable files to the secondary region. Measure replication lag; it defines the worst-case data loss more accurately than a marketing label.
Route traffic and fence writes
- Monitor the primary with health checks that test more than network reachability.
- When the incident authority declares a regional failure, stop or isolate primary writes if possible.
- Promote the secondary database according to the provider’s documented procedure and record the last replicated point.
- Enable or scale the secondary web tier, then run smoke tests for login, reading content, uploading a file and the site’s critical transaction.
- Change health-checked DNS or global load-balancer routing to the secondary. Use a DNS TTL appropriate for your measured recovery target, but expect resolvers to cache records beyond the nominal TTL.
- Monitor error rates and replication state. Keep the primary fenced until you have a deliberate rollback plan.
AWS recovery guidance calls for recovering the operating system and services, WordPress code and configuration, themes and plugins, uploads and the database; it also describes Route 53 health checks for redirecting traffic to a secondary region. Microsoft’s multiregion AKS pattern similarly combines replicated data with global routing.

Alert on symptoms that users experience and on leading indicators:
- load-balancer 5xx responses, target health and connection errors;
- p95 and p99 latency, PHP worker saturation and queue depth;
- database CPU, storage, replication lag, failed connections and deadlocks;
- shared-storage latency, capacity and permission errors;
- cache hit rate, evictions and unavailable nodes; and
- backup completion, restore verification and certificate or secret expiry.
Run these exercises on a schedule and record measured results:
- Terminate one web node and confirm uninterrupted service and automatic replacement.
- Block one Availability Zone and verify that capacity and health checks behave as designed.
- Perform a planned database promotion and confirm safe application reconnection.
- Restore the database and files into an isolated environment, then validate WordPress functions.
- Flush or disable the cache and measure recovery while the database carries the load.
- Simulate primary-region loss, execute the runbook, test DNS behavior and practice rollback.
Do not infer RTO or RPO from a provider’s typical figure. Publish the times your own team measured, including detection, decision, promotion, DNS convergence and application validation.

Trade-offs when choosing an architecture
| Decision | Option A | Option B | What changes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Failure scope | Multiple nodes in one zone | Nodes across zones or regions | Broader protection requires more networking, data replication and testing |
| Database operation | Managed MySQL-compatible cluster | Self-managed replication | Managed service reduces patching and promotion work; self-management increases control and responsibility |
| File handling | Shared file system | Object storage plus CDN | Shared mounts simplify plugin compatibility; object storage can scale static delivery but may require plugin changes |
| Regional posture | Pilot light | Warm standby | Pilot light lowers idle cost; warm standby generally shortens activation |
| Consistency | Local managed failover | Cross-region asynchronous replication | Local promotion is usually faster and loses less data; cross-region replication can have measurable lag |
| Portability | Cloud-specific services | Portable components and automation | Specialized services simplify HA; portable designs may reduce lock-in but require more engineering |
Common failure modes and fixes
Nodes serve different content
If a plugin or upload appears on one node only, local disk or an incomplete deployment is usually responsible. Move shared data to the selected file or object-storage layer, verify mounts at boot and test reads and writes from every node.
The balancer marks a broken site healthy
A basic HTTP 200 check can pass while the database is unavailable. Replace it with a dependency-aware readiness endpoint that is fast, read-only and safe to call repeatedly.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Database failover causes errors or duplicate actions
Check that WordPress uses the cluster endpoint, DNS caching is not excessively long, timeouts are finite and retry logic is safe for each operation. Review connection pools in PHP workers after a promotion.
Failover works but users see stale pages
Inspect CDN and page-cache rules, purge or version changed assets, and exclude personalized or administrative responses from shared caches. Cached content can mask origin recovery or expose the wrong user’s response if rules are too broad.
Regional recovery creates conflicting writes
Do not activate both regions as writers without a conflict strategy. Fence the old primary, record replication lag and require an incident authority to approve promotion and rollback.
