Then unlock your Samsung phone and hold it near a contactless payment terminal. The exact Settings labels can vary by Samsung model and software version, so use Settings search for “NFC” if the paths below do not match.
Before you set up Google Wallet
Google’s stated requirements include a valid Google Account, Android 9 or later, and current versions of Google Play services and Google Wallet. The phone also needs NFC for in-store tap to pay, a supported screen lock, and software that meets Google’s security requirements. Samsung branding alone does not guarantee compatibility: the model, software and security state matter.

Turn on NFC
Open Settings and search for “NFC,” then switch it on. The location and wording of the setting may differ between Samsung models and software versions. If Settings search finds no NFC option, the phone may not support NFC.

Make Google Wallet the default payment app
In Settings, search for “NFC,” then open NFC and Contactless payments > Payment default and select Google Wallet. Confirm if prompted. Labels may vary by device. Google Wallet Help: Set up contactless payments

Add a payment card
In Wallet, tap Add to Wallet > Payment card and follow the instructions, including any issuer verification. Your bank and the exact card must support Google Wallet in your country. A physical card’s contactless symbol by itself does not mean it can be added to Wallet. Google Wallet Help: Find supported payment methods

Set a screen lock and complete security checks
Set a supported screen lock, such as a PIN, pattern or password; supported biometrics may also be available for verification. Some smart-unlock methods are not accepted. If tap to pay is unavailable, check whether the phone is Play Protect certified and whether its software has been modified or is otherwise unsupported. Pay at a store
Unlock your phone and hold it near the contactless reader. You do not need to open the Wallet app first. Follow any on-screen prompt to verify the purchase. Google requires a payment method in a supported country; availability also depends on the bank and card. Google Wallet Help: Tap to pay with your phone
Fix common setup and payment problems
- Wallet says NFC is off or unsupported: Search Settings for NFC and turn it on. If no NFC setting appears, the device may lack NFC.
- A different app opens when you tap: Search Settings for NFC, then open NFC and Contactless payments > Payment default and choose Google Wallet.
- Your card is not ready or will not add: Finish any setup or verification prompt. If it still fails, ask your bank whether that specific card is eligible for Google Wallet in your country.
- Tap to pay is blocked by a security check: Check Play Protect certification. Rooting, a custom ROM, an unlocked bootloader, developer software or other modifications can prevent Wallet payments.
- The terminal declines the payment or asks you to insert the card: Make sure the phone is unlocked and the reader accepts contactless payments on your card’s network. A terminal may accept a network by chip or swipe without supporting contactless transactions on that same network. If the setup appears correct, reposition the phone near the reader.
Using Google Wallet on public transport
Some transit systems accept a contactless bank card in Wallet; others let you save a transit pass. Which option works depends on the local operator, so check its instructions before travelling. If the system records a journey when you tap in and out, use the same device and payment method for both taps. Your phone and watch count as separate methods, even when they are linked to the same card. Switching devices or cards can leave a journey incomplete and may result in a maximum fare.
