“Googlebooks” usually refers to Google Play Books, Google’s reader and personal ebook library. To get started, open the app on an Android phone or tablet, or open your Google Play Books library on a computer, and sign in to the Google account that holds your books. Then open a title and test its reading controls, annotations, uploads, and offline access.
This guide is for readers. Google Play Books Partner Center is a separate service for publishers distributing books.

Open your library and find a book
On Android
- Install or open the Google Play Books app.
- Check the profile or account shown in the app. If a purchase or rental is missing, make sure you are signed in to the Google account used to buy or rent it.
- Open a title from your library to enter the reader.
On a computer
- Open the Google Play Books library in a browser.
- Sign in to the Google account that contains your books, then open a title.
Test navigation and reading display
While a book is open, tap the center of the page to reveal the reading controls. Swipe to turn pages, and open the contents menu to move between chapters. Explore the display options available for that title, such as font, text size, line spacing, brightness, or page background.

Choose the view that suits the book
Some books provide original pages, which preserve a fixed page layout; others use flowing text that can adapt to reading settings. A title may offer one mode or both, so the absence of a mode is not necessarily a setup problem.

Upload a PDF or EPUB to your library
From a computer
- Open the Google Play Books library.
- Choose Your books, then Upload files.
- Select a PDF or EPUB file and let the upload finish.
From Android
- For a PDF, open Play Books settings and enable PDF uploading.
- Save the PDF or EPUB on the device, then open it with Play Books or upload it through the app.
The PDF-upload setting is specific to PDFs; EPUB uploads do not require enabling it. Uploaded files can be read on devices signed in to the same Google account.
Try bookmarks, highlights, and notes
In an open book, add a bookmark, select text to highlight it, and attach a note if the title supports those actions. Use the reader’s annotations view to find or edit your saved annotations. On a computer, annotations can also be saved to Google Drive or exported.

These features are available for most books, not guaranteed for every title. Publishers control whether text can be copied, so a copying restriction is not evidence that the reader is malfunctioning.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCheck that offline reading works
- While connected to the internet, download the ebook to the device you plan to use.
- Once the download is complete, disable the device’s network connection.
- Open the downloaded title in Play Books and check that you can read it.
Downloading in advance is the key test: having a book in your online library alone does not confirm that it is available without a connection. Google also documents computer export to EPUB or PDF where available. If an export is delivered as an ASCM file, Google says Adobe Digital Editions is needed to read the exported EPUB or PDF.

If a purchased or rented book is missing
- Check the account shown in Play Books against the Google account used for the purchase or rental.
- Consider device limits. Publishers set these restrictions; Google says most books typically allow downloads on 3–5 devices, while many textbooks limit downloads to one device at a time.
Use a device you already have
The documented Play Books app runs on Android phones as well as tablets. You can complete the setup and feature checks on a compatible Android device you already own; buying a new tablet is not a requirement.
