To give each person personalized responses from shared Google Home speakers or displays, each household member must set up Voice Match with their own Google Account. In the Google Home app, open Home settings, select the home’s assistant, then choose Voice Match and enable it on supported devices. Repeat those steps for each person; one home can have Voice Match for up to six people.

Set up Voice Match for each household member

  1. Use the right Google Account. Each person should be signed in to the Google Account they want associated with their voice profile. Google allows one Voice Match profile per Google Account. Google’s home setup instructions do not work with Google Workspace accounts. For a supervised account on a shared device, use Google’s Family Link guidance.
  2. Open the home’s settings. In the Google Home app, tap your profile picture or initial at the top right, then tap Home settings.
  3. Choose the assistant configured for the home. Tap Google Assistant or Gemini for Home voice assistant, depending on what appears in the app.
  4. Open Voice Match and choose devices. Tap Voice Match. The app displays the devices that support it; select the ones where this person should be recognized. If no devices are enabled, tap More and follow the in-app prompts.
  5. Repeat for each person. Each member completes the setup using their own account. Google supports up to six people with Voice Match in one home. If more than six people need access, Google advises prioritizing people who need specific controls, such as children or guests.

Google’s older Assistant instructions use the path Settings > Google Assistant > Voice Match. The current Google Home instructions use the profile menu and Home settings; labels can vary with the assistant configured for the home. See Google Home’s Voice Match setup instructions for the current flow.

What Voice Match does—and what it does not do

Voice Match lets supported devices recognize household members and provide results associated with the recognized person. Google lists speakers, Smart Displays and Smart Clocks as example device types, but support depends on the device and language. The Google Home app’s device list is the practical way to see which devices can be enabled in your home.

Voice Match recognition is separate from permission to provide Personal results. Those results can include information from Gmail, Google Calendar and Google Photos, as well as private YouTube playlists and personal YouTube Music library content. Availability varies by country and language. A person can be recognized without Personal results being enabled, so review that setting separately.

  • Small size, bigger sound – Stream your favorite music, shows, podcasts, and more from providers like Amazon Music, Spotify, and Prime Video—now with deeper bass and clearer vocals. Includes a 5.5" display so you can view shows, song titles, and more at a glance.

  • See more with the built-in camera – Check in on your family, pets, and more using the built-in camera. Drop in on your home when you're out or view the front door from your Echo Show 5 with compatible video doorbells.

Review Personal results on shared devices

In Google Home, tap the profile picture or initial, then go to Home settings > Google Assistant or Gemini for Home voice assistant > Personal results. Set the home-level permission first, then adjust which individual devices can provide those results. Google says Personal results must be enabled for the home before they can be enabled on a particular device. See Google’s Personal results settings guidance.

  • If Personal results are on but Voice Match is off, anyone who speaks to the device may be able to access information made available there.
  • Google warns that a mistaken match—for example, to another person’s voice or a recording—could expose the account holder’s information.
  • If Voice Match is turned off after both it and Personal results were enabled, Personal results turn off automatically as well.

Use Guest Mode for temporary privacy

On supported Google smart speakers and displays, say “Hey Google, turn on Guest Mode” when you want to suppress Personal results temporarily. Say “Hey Google, turn off Guest Mode” to return to ordinary use. While Guest Mode is on, Personal results will not be spoken or shown, and Google says Assistant recordings and activity are automatically deleted from the device owner’s account during that period. Guest Mode availability varies by country and language; third-party services may still save activity related to their features. Details are in Google’s Guest Mode help.

How Voice Match handles voice data

Google says it creates a unique voice model on its servers and stores it only on devices where Voice Match is enabled. When someone speaks, the device sends the model to Google to process the query and compare the voice. Google says it deletes the model and comparison data immediately after that process. A recognized person can receive their Personal results if those are enabled; an unmatched voice is treated as a guest query and does not receive that person’s Personal results. Google’s account-level Voice Match help contains additional details, including information that may differ from older device-level descriptions: Google Account Voice Match information.

Common setup issues

  • Voice Match is missing from settings: Check whether you selected the assistant option shown for your home, and look for Voice Match there. The app only lists devices that support the feature.
  • The device does not appear: Check the Google Home app’s supported-device list for that home. Device and language support vary, so do not assume every speaker, display or clock is compatible.
  • A household member cannot complete setup: Confirm they are signed in to their own Google Account, not a Google Workspace account. For a supervised account on a shared device, consult Family Link guidance.
  • Personal information is available to other speakers: Review Personal results at both the home and device levels. Turn them off on a shared device if that access is not appropriate, or use Guest Mode when available for a temporary change.
