To set up a reset Google Nest or Home speaker or display, power it on, then open the Google Home app and choose Home > Add > Device > Search for device. Follow the prompts to connect it to Wi-Fi. If you only changed your Wi-Fi password or router, try forgetting the device’s saved network and adding it again before performing another factory reset.
Set up the speaker or display after a factory reset
- Power on the device. Connect the Nest or Home speaker or display to power and wait for it to start.
- Open Google Home. Use the latest version of the app on your phone or tablet.
- Start device setup. From Home, select Add > Device > Search for device.
- Follow the on-screen prompts. Select the Wi-Fi network you want the device to use and enter its password.
- Keep your phone or tablet nearby. Google recommends keeping it about 5 to 20 feet from the speaker or display during Wi-Fi setup; closer is preferable when pairing is unreliable. Google Home and Nest Help: Set up your speaker or display
The physical factory-reset procedure depends on the specific model. If you still need to reset the device, follow Google’s instructions for that model rather than assuming all Nest and Home devices reset the same way: Google Home and Nest Help: Factory reset your speaker or display.

If you only changed your Wi-Fi network
A router replacement or changed Wi-Fi password does not always require a factory reset. In Google Home, open the device tile, tap its settings, then go to Device information > Wi-Fi > Forget this network. Return to Home and add or search for the device again, then select the current network and enter its password. Google recommends a factory reset and setup again if forgetting the network does not work, the app says it cannot communicate with the device, or the app will not let you change network settings. If Google Home cannot find the device
- Confirm the speaker or display is plugged in and powered on, and that Google Home is up to date.
- Move the setup phone or tablet closer to the device, then restart the speaker or display and search again.
- On Android, try turning the phone’s Wi-Fi off and on, then force close and reopen Google Home. If the device’s temporary Wi-Fi network appears in the phone’s Wi-Fi list, connect to it and continue setup.
- If possible, try another supported phone or tablet. This can help identify whether discovery is failing on the setup device.
- If the Wi-Fi network does not appear, verify the password and confirm that the setup phone or tablet supports the network band in use. Google recommends being within 15 to 20 feet of the router while searching for a network; this is a troubleshooting distance, not a guarantee of coverage.

If setup freezes or stops responding
Unplug the speaker or display, wait 10 seconds, reconnect power, and try the setup flow again. A reboot is not the same as a factory reset: Google says, “A reboot isn’t the same as a factory reset of your speaker or display.” A factory reset clears the device’s data and cannot be undone, so do not repeat one simply as a routine restart.
