To set up Gmail on a Samsung Galaxy tablet, open the Gmail app, tap your profile picture, choose Add another account > Google, and follow the sign-in prompts. You can also add the Google account in Samsung Settings. Menu names can vary by model and software version.
Before you begin
Connect the tablet to Wi-Fi or confirm that mobile data works. On a new tablet, Samsung’s setup guidance has you choose a Wi-Fi network before the Google account prompt. Cellular setup may differ on LTE and 5G models.

A Google account is what you use for Gmail and Google Play. It is separate from a Samsung account, which is for Samsung services; you do not need a Samsung account just to sign in to Gmail.

- Open Gmail. If the app asks you to choose an account, select the Google sign-in option.
- Tap your profile picture at the top right of the search bar.
- Tap Add another account, then choose Google.
- Enter your Google account details and follow the prompts. If two-step verification is enabled, complete the requested verification step.
Google’s instructions apply to Android phones and tablets: sign in to Gmail on Android.

Add the Google account through Samsung Settings
Use this route if you want to add the account at the device level or cannot start the sign-in flow in Gmail:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Accounts and backup > Manage accounts.
- Tap Add account > Google, then sign in and follow the prompts.
Samsung says adding a Google account this way enables Gmail and other Google services. Its Galaxy tablet account guidance notes that screens and labels can vary across models and software versions.

Find or install Gmail
Swipe up to open the Apps screen and check the Google folder. Google apps may be preloaded on a Galaxy tablet, but Gmail is not guaranteed to be present on every model. If it is missing, install it from the Google Play Store after signing in with a Google account. Samsung’s Google apps guidance covers finding and downloading apps. Samsung Email is a separate app, not Gmail.
Choose the right setup route

Neither route is stated by Google or Samsung to be faster or more secure than the other. Samsung’s account-management instructions give the Settings path; labels may differ on your tablet.

Add another email address, including a non-Gmail account
In Gmail, tap the profile picture > Add another account. Choose Google for another Gmail address. For a supported provider such as Outlook, iCloud Mail, or Yahoo, select that provider and follow its prompts.
If your provider is not listed or automatic setup fails, choose Other, enter the full email address, select Personal (IMAP), and enter the provider’s IMAP settings. Get the server details from the email provider rather than guessing. Some providers require a different sign-in method, such as an app password. Google’s Android account setup instructions describe these options. Google says Gmail supports up to five email addresses; the current help page does not state a publication year.

Fix Gmail if messages are missing or not syncing
- Check the connection: Confirm Wi-Fi or mobile data is connected by loading a website.
- Check Gmail sync: In Gmail, open Menu > Settings > select the account and make sure Sync Gmail is on.
- Check device account sync: Open Settings > Accounts and backup > Manage accounts and review the Google account’s sync settings. Exact labels may vary.
- Try a manual sync: Swipe down in the inbox. Google says this can take up to 15 minutes, and longer if the device has not been used for a while.
- Check storage: Google storage is shared across Gmail, Google Photos, and Google Drive. If it is full, Gmail syncing and sending or receiving messages can be affected.
- Update the app: Install any Gmail update available in Google Play. Restart the tablet if the issue seems temporary.

A password or verification problem is different from a sync problem: sync checks only help after the account is signed in. If you have forgotten your username or password, use Google’s account recovery guidance. Never share your password or verification codes with another person.
