Google’s personal code-assistant project is a reproducible starting point for a university lab: it runs a Gemma 2 2B web service on a Linux host and connects it to a Visual Studio Code extension. Its tutorial specifies about 16 GB of GPU memory, about 16 GB of system RAM, and at least 20 GB of disk for that configuration. Those figures are not universal Gemma 2 requirements, and installing the project does not establish that its explanations are reliable for a course. Treat it as a prototype, then evaluate it against instructor-reviewed examples before students depend on it.
Choose a deployment route before installing
Google’s general execution guidance makes two choices central: which Gemma model variant to use, and which framework or execution path to run it with. The options include local desktop tools, Python frameworks, edge inference, and managed or self-managed cloud serving. Match the route to the lab’s existing hardware, technical capacity, interface needs, privacy requirements, and maintenance capability. Check that the selected framework supports the model’s file format.

For an instructor-facing code assistant integrated with VS Code, the closest documented starting point is Google’s Linux-based personal code-assistant project: Build a personal AI coding assistant with Gemma. It uses Gemma 2 2B behind a web service and connects that service to a VS Code extension.

Google also documents running Gemma through LM Studio. Its integration guide covers GGUF and MLX model formats, downloading and loading a model, and serving a local API: Run Gemma with LM Studio. This is an alternative local workflow, not the same deployment as Google’s custom web service and VS Code extension.

Match the hardware to the chosen setup
For the specific Gemma 2 2B code-assistant project, Google’s undated tutorial, accessed October 3, 2026, lists the following setup figures:
| Resource | Google’s figure for the tutorial configuration |
|---|---|
| GPU memory | About 16 GB |
| System RAM | About 16 GB |
| Disk space | At least 20 GB |
| Cloud VM GPU | NVIDIA T4 specified; L4 or higher recommended |
These are project-specific setup figures, not minimums for every way of running Gemma 2. The actual needs vary with model size, framework, model format, quantization, and accelerator. Google’s general guide explains that quantization can reduce memory and compute needs, but it may affect performance and limit tuning options. Validate any reduced-precision configuration on the lab’s own explanation tasks rather than assuming it will behave equivalently. See Run Gemma content generation and inferences for the broader execution guidance.
Install Google’s Linux code-assistant project
The project guide calls for Python 3, Python’s venv virtual-environment support, Node.js and npm, and Git. Its setup involves cloning Google’s Gemma cookbook, creating and activating a Python virtual environment, installing project dependencies, and setting up the web-service and VS Code-extension components. Follow the project’s current instructions for the exact commands and configuration: dependency versions and setup details can change, and a current pinned dependency matrix is not stated in the guide.

Evaluate explanations before student use
Google’s setup tutorial demonstrates running and prompting the model; it does not establish that the system is reliable for any particular course or student population. Google’s intended-use statement describes Gemma as a starting point for developers and researchers, saying: “Gemma itself is not a finished product and does not perform specific tasks directly.” The lab is responsible for shaping and checking the application. Google’s Responsible Generative AI Toolkit discusses evaluation and safeguards for open models.
Build a course-relevant test set
Before classroom use, assemble instructor-reviewed examples covering the languages and topics students will encounter. Include ordinary correct code, subtle bugs, edge cases, and requests for explanations aimed at different student levels. For each prompt, retain the code, expected interpretation, and the points a sound explanation should cover.

Score the response, not just whether it sounds plausible
Have instructors review answers for factual correctness, whether the explanation matches the actual code, how the system handles uncertainty, and whether it invents behavior that the code does not contain. A fluent explanation can still be wrong; assess claims against the example rather than judging style alone.

Re-test after changes
Repeat the evaluation when the lab changes the model, prompt, framework, or quantization. Those changes can alter outputs, so results from one configuration do not automatically apply to another. Keep the test set and scoring criteria stable enough to compare versions, and document the configuration used for each evaluation.

Set safeguards appropriate to the lab
Decide what information students may send to the assistant and where prompts, code, and outputs are processed or retained. A locally hosted service may support a lab-controlled workflow, but the deployment choice alone does not answer every privacy or governance question; review the selected software and infrastructure. Consider the toolkit’s topics—privacy, fairness, accountability, evaluation, and safeguards—and apply those relevant to the course and institution.
The official sources do not publish a measured reliability score for Gemma 2 code explanations in university labs, nor do they establish that a particular framework produces more correct explanations. Do not present the installation as educational validation or advertise a model-specific accuracy rate without results from a clearly defined evaluation.
