To manage a child’s Game Center activity, add the child’s own Apple Account to your Family Sharing group, then use the Game Center restrictions in Family or Screen Time—depending on the software installed. To change your own Game Center profile and privacy preferences, go to Settings > Game Center. These are separate controls: account preferences manage how your profile works, while parental restrictions limit what a child can do.
Before you begin: set up the child’s account
For parent-managed controls, the child needs their own Apple Account in your Family Sharing group. A parent or guardian in that group can manage the child’s settings from their own Apple device. Avoid using a parent’s account as the child’s gaming account: the family controls are organized around each child’s account.

Apple’s newer family-control workflow is documented for iOS 27 and iPadOS 27. Apple says every device in the Family Sharing group must be on the applicable latest software to use that shared experience. If the family cannot update all its devices, use the earlier Screen Time interface or set restrictions directly on the child’s device. Menu availability and some defaults can vary by the child’s age and location.
Choose the Game Center restrictions path for your software
Current Family settings in iOS 27 and iPadOS 27
- On a parent or guardian’s device, open Settings > Family.
- Tap the child’s name, then open Apps & Websites > Restrictions.
- Scroll to Game Center, choose a control, and set it to Allowed or Blocked as appropriate.
Apple’s current family workflow is documented in its parental controls guide. If the labels on your device differ, check its installed software version and region rather than assuming the setting is missing.

Earlier Screen Time settings
- Open Settings > Screen Time.
- Tap Content & Privacy Restrictions and turn it on if necessary.
- Open App Store, Media, Web & Games > Game Center, then choose the restrictions you want.

For example, a parent might allow multiplayer but block adding friends, or permit play while blocking private messaging. Choose each restriction based on the interaction you want to allow; blocking one feature does not automatically configure the others.

These account-level preferences are for the signed-in user and are distinct from a parent’s restrictions on a child’s account. On iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Game Center. Depending on the options available on your software, you can:

- Review friends and requests.
- Allow or prevent apps from accessing your Game Center friends list.
- Choose whether friends can find you using the email address or phone number associated with your Apple Account.
- Set activity visibility to Everyone, Friends Only, or Only You.
- Allow invitations from nearby players over Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.
- Sign out of Game Center.
Apple’s Game Center settings guide describes these profile options. Changing your own visibility or app access does not replace parental restrictions on a child’s account.
Set play-time and other limits separately
Game Center restrictions manage social and profile features; they do not create a gaming schedule. Screen Time has separate tools for limits and broader device use. You can use these alongside Game Center controls where available:

- Schedules: use Screen Time scheduling controls to restrict device use at chosen times.
- Communication controls: manage permitted communication separately from Game Center interactions.
- Content and age restrictions: set limits for age-rated content and other supported categories.
- Screen Time passcode: require a passcode before Screen Time settings can be changed.
Apple’s Screen Time guide for families explains the broader controls. Decide separately whether your goal is to limit social contact in games, restrict access to games, or set when games can be used.
Check the settings on the child’s device
After changing restrictions, review the options shown for the child’s account and confirm that the intended activities are allowed or blocked. Apple notes that parental settings can be enabled by default based on a child’s age and location, and some may not be removable. If a setting is absent or locked, consult Apple’s current guidance for the device’s software and region rather than relying on a different version’s menu.
