To focus a manual E-mount lens, enable Peaking Display for a quick visual cue, then use Focus Magnifier to inspect a critical detail while turning the lens’s focus ring. Sony’s menu paths and feature availability vary by camera body, so use the model-specific Help Guide if the example paths below do not match your camera.
What focus peaking and magnification do
Focus peaking enhances the outlines of areas the camera identifies as in focus. It helps you scan a scene quickly, but its colored outlines are a visual aid—not a guaranteed focus measurement. Focus Magnifier enlarges part of the image so you can inspect a selected detail more closely. Sony notes that availability and operation of Focus Magnifier and MF Assist depend on the camera model. Set up manual focus aids
- Select Manual Focus (MF) if needed. In MF, focus by turning the lens focus ring. Whether you need to change a camera setting depends on the lens and body combination.
- Turn on peaking. On the Sony ILCE-9M3, go to
MENU → Image (Focus) → Peaking Display → Peaking Display → On. In the same menu, choose Peaking Level and Peaking Color settings that stand out against your subject. Other bodies may place these controls elsewhere. See Sony’s ILCE-9M3 accessibility functions guide for that model’s instructions. - Enable Focus Magnifier. On the ILCE-9M3, use
MENU → Image (Focus) → Focus Assistant → Focus Magnifier. Use the center control to enlarge the view and the directional controls to move the magnified area. - Focus on the important detail. Place the magnified area over the feature that needs to be sharp, then turn the manual lens’s focus ring until it looks clear. Use peaking for a quick overview and magnification to inspect fine detail.
Make magnification easier to reach
If you use magnification often, assign Focus Magnifier to a custom key when your camera supports it. Sony’s ILCE-7RM6 customization guide explains assigning the function for manual focus, including use with a manual lens or a lens without signal contacts, and recommends choosing an easy-to-operate key. Using touch controls
Some Sony bodies support touch-based magnification. Sony documents touch magnification for the ILCE-7CM2 and ILCE-7CR when the required touch settings are enabled. The settings and operation are specific to those models; consult Sony’s ILCE-7CM2 and ILCE-7CR accessibility functions guide rather than assuming the same controls apply to another E-mount camera.

If the menu path does not match
- Look for Peaking Display, Focus Magnifier or Focus Assistant in your camera’s focus-related menus; names and locations can differ.
- Check the Help Guide for your exact camera model to confirm feature availability and control instructions.
- If you cannot find magnification or MF Assist, do not assume the feature is available with the same controls on every body; Sony states that availability and details vary by model.
