A working setup depends on four details: every EssentialsX module must use the same version, the jars must be in the server’s plugins/ directory, Vault must load before EssentialsX reads permission metadata, and the format must contain the placeholders you expect, such as {PREFIX}, {DISPLAYNAME}, and {MESSAGE}.

EssentialsX Chat is an optional EssentialsX module that controls how player messages are displayed. The core EssentialsX jar provides the main plugin; the Chat jar adds chat formatting and chat-related permissions. Installing only the core jar does not give you the full EssentialsX Chat feature set.
Chat formatting is a chain of plugins rather than a single setting. The player sends a message, the permissions plugin stores group and prefix metadata, Vault exposes that metadata through a common interface, and EssentialsX Chat applies the pattern in its configuration. If any link is missing, a player can still have a rank in LuckPerms while seeing no prefix in chat.

Requirements and preparation
- A supported Bukkit-derived Minecraft server. EssentialsX recommends Paper for servers running Minecraft 1.13 and newer.
- The core EssentialsX jar and the separate EssentialsX Chat jar, both from the same release.
- Vault when you want EssentialsX to read prefixes, suffixes, groups, or other permission-plugin metadata.
- A permissions plugin, such as LuckPerms, when ranks and prefixes are managed outside EssentialsX.
- File access to the server directory and permission to stop and restart the server cleanly.
- A backup of the existing
plugins/Essentialsfolder before a major upgrade or configuration rewrite.
Do not mix EssentialsX module versions. A mismatched core and Chat jar can produce startup errors or behavior that appears to be a formatting mistake. Download a matching set and keep the version number consistent across every EssentialsX module you use.
Install EssentialsX Chat step by step
- Choose the server platform. Use Paper if you are starting a modern server; it is the platform EssentialsX recommends for 1.13 and later. Other supported Bukkit-derived platforms can work, but compatibility depends on the server and Minecraft version you run.
- Prepare the plugins directory. Stop the server if it is running, then locate the server’s main directory and open
plugins/. Do not put plugin jars in a subfolder insideplugins/. - Copy the EssentialsX jars. Place the core EssentialsX jar and the EssentialsX Chat jar in
plugins/. If the download is an archive, extract the jars first; the server loads jar files, not a compressed archive containing them. - Add Vault and a permissions plugin when needed. Install Vault and LuckPerms if prefixes, suffixes, or group-specific formats are part of your design. Basic message formatting can work without permission metadata, but
{PREFIX},{SUFFIX}, and group features need the bridge and a source of group data. - Start the server once. A first startup creates the EssentialsX data folder and writes
plugins/Essentials/config.yml. Watch the console while the server loads and confirm that the core, Chat module, Vault, and LuckPerms all enable without errors. - Stop the server cleanly. Use the server console’s normal stop command rather than terminating the process. This flushes configuration and player data and leaves you with a reliable point from which to edit.
- Back up the generated folder. Copy
plugins/Essentialssomewhere safe before changing many settings or upgrading. A backup lets you restore your known-good format if a YAML edit prevents EssentialsX from loading.
Configure the chat section in config.yml
Open plugins/Essentials/config.yml in a text editor and find the top-level chat: section. Keep the indentation exactly as shown: YAML uses spaces, not tabs. Quote format strings that contain ampersand color codes, punctuation, or a colon so the parser treats the entire pattern as one value.
Use one global format
For a server where every rank should look the same, define one format under chat:. This example displays a LuckPerms prefix, the player’s display name, a gray separator, and the message in white:
chat:
radius: 0
format: '{PREFIX}{DISPLAYNAME}&7: &f{MESSAGE}'
The radius line is shown with the common global-chat value of 0. Keep the value used by your server if you have deliberately configured a different chat radius; changing it is independent of the placeholder pattern.
Use group-specific formats
When ranks need different colors or layouts, use group-formats and define one entry per permission group. The names must match the group names exactly, including capitalization where your permissions setup distinguishes it.

chat:
radius: 0
group-formats:
default: '{PREFIX}{DISPLAYNAME}&7: &f{MESSAGE}'
moderator: '{PREFIX}{DISPLAYNAME}&7: &e{MESSAGE}'
admin: '{PREFIX}{DISPLAYNAME}&7: &c{MESSAGE}'
Choose either a single pattern or a group-oriented design deliberately. A global format is easier to maintain when all ranks share one presentation. group-formats gives each rank precise styling but requires an entry whenever you add or rename a group.

Placeholder reference
EssentialsX documents these placeholders for chat patterns:
| Placeholder | Value inserted into the message | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
{MESSAGE} |
The text the player sent | Always include it unless you intentionally suppress player text. |
{USERNAME} |
The player’s username | Use when you want the account name rather than a formatted display name. |
{DISPLAYNAME} |
The player’s display name | Usually the readable name shown after a prefix. |
{NICKNAME} |
The player’s Essentials nickname, when one is set | Use for nickname-oriented servers. |
{PREFIX} |
Prefix metadata supplied through the permissions integration | Ranks such as Moderator or a colored tag. |
{SUFFIX} |
Suffix metadata supplied through the permissions integration | Titles, seasonal tags, or other text after a name. |
{GROUP} |
The player’s permission group | Show a group name when you do not want a separate prefix. |
{WORLD} |
World-related value exposed by EssentialsX | Include world context in multi-world formats. |
{WORLDNAME} |
The world name | Show the full world name to players. |
{SHORTWORLDNAME} |
The shortened world name | Keep a multi-world tag compact. |
{TEAMNAME} |
The player’s team name when team data is available | Display scoreboard-team context. |
{TEAMPREFIX} |
The team prefix when team data is available | Add a team tag before the name. |
{TEAMSUFFIX} |
The team suffix when team data is available | Add a team tag after the name. |
A placeholder only prints useful data when the relevant system supplies it. For example, adding {PREFIX} to the format does not create a rank; LuckPerms must assign the prefix and Vault must make that metadata available to EssentialsX.
Make LuckPerms prefixes appear through Vault
- Create or select the groups in LuckPerms. Use the group names you intend to reference in
group-formats, such asdefault, moderator, andadmin. - Assign a prefix or suffix to each group. The metadata belongs to the LuckPerms group, not to the EssentialsX format. Include any color codes in the value you assign, following the syntax supported by your installed versions.
- Check inheritance. If a player inherits a group rather than holding it directly, verify that the inherited group supplies the expected prefix and that another inherited value is not taking precedence in your permissions configuration.
- Match group names exactly. For
group-formats, an entry namedmoderatorwill not match a LuckPerms group namedModerators. Correct the spelling in either the permissions data or the YAML entry. - Confirm the bridge is loaded. Vault must be enabled and able to see the permissions provider. If Vault is missing or disabled, EssentialsX cannot read LuckPerms prefixes, suffixes, or group information through the normal integration path.
- Keep the placeholder in the pattern. The format must contain
{PREFIX}or{SUFFIX}where you want that metadata displayed. Assigning a prefix without adding its placeholder leaves chat unchanged.
For a simple rank tag, a pattern such as {PREFIX}{DISPLAYNAME}&7: &f{MESSAGE} keeps the permission metadata separate from the visual layout. You can later change a group’s prefix in LuckPerms without editing every chat format.
Control player-entered formatting with permissions
EssentialsX provides separate permissions for player-entered formatting. Grant only the nodes your groups need instead of giving every player a wildcard permission.

| Permission | Purpose | Policy decision |
|---|---|---|
essentials.chat.color |
Allows the player’s message to use supported color codes. | Useful for trusted ranks; withhold it from ordinary players when colored text would reduce readability or complicate moderation. |
essentials.chat.format |
Allows supported formatting styles in player messages. | Grant separately from basic color access when you want tighter control. |
essentials.chat.magic |
Allows the magic/obfuscated style. | Usually restrict this because it can make messages difficult to read or moderate. |
essentials.chat.rgb |
Allows RGB color formatting where the installed EssentialsX release supports it. | Check your release before assigning it; RGB capability is version-dependent. |
essentials.chat.url |
Allows URL-related chat formatting behavior documented by EssentialsX. | Grant only if links are appropriate for the server’s moderation policy. |
These permissions govern what players can enter in their own messages; they do not replace the server-wide pattern in config.yml. A player can have color permission and still see no rank prefix if the format omits {PREFIX}.
Restart and verify the installation
After editing the file, save it and perform a controlled server restart. A restart is safer than relying on a reload command because it causes EssentialsX, Vault, LuckPerms, and the Chat module to initialize in a known order.
- Join with a normal player account, not only an administrator account with every permission.
- Send a plain message and confirm that
{MESSAGE}appears and that the separator and colors are readable. - Test one player in each relevant LuckPerms group. Confirm the expected prefix, display name, and group-specific style.
- Test a group that should not have color or formatting permissions. Its message should remain subject to your restricted policy.
- Review the console for missing dependencies, disabled plugins, YAML parsing errors, or version warnings.
- If you changed a format while the server was running, verify that the saved file contains the new value and that the restart did not restore an older copy.
Troubleshooting common EssentialsX Chat problems
There is no chat output or EssentialsX Chat is disabled
Check the console first. Confirm that both the core EssentialsX jar and the Chat jar are present in plugins/ and that they enable successfully. Remove duplicate or obsolete EssentialsX jars, then restart. A mismatched module version can prevent the Chat component from loading even when the core plugin appears active.
The prefix is missing but messages work
Check the problem in this order:
- Confirm that the format contains
{PREFIX}in the position where the tag should appear. - Confirm that LuckPerms actually assigns a prefix to the player’s effective group.
- Confirm that Vault is installed and enabled.
- Check that EssentialsX is reading the intended permissions provider rather than a different plugin.
- If you use
group-formats, verify that the group name in the YAML matches the LuckPerms group exactly.
This isolates whether the failure is in the pattern, the metadata, the bridge, or the group lookup rather than changing all four systems at once.
The wrong group format is being used
Inspect the player’s effective LuckPerms group and compare it character-for-character with the keys under group-formats. Correct capitalization, spelling, and inheritance. If a player inherits a group with a different name than the one you formatted, add a matching entry or adjust the permissions hierarchy.

Colors or styles do not work in player messages
Check the relevant permission node on the player’s effective group. Color, general formatting, magic, RGB, and URL behavior have separate controls. Do not assume that essentials.chat.color grants every style. RGB in particular depends on the EssentialsX version installed, so consult that release’s documented capability before troubleshooting the permission itself.
The format appears as literal braces
Literal text such as {PREFIX} usually means the value was placed outside the recognized chat: configuration, the key was misspelled, or another chat plugin is handling the message. Check indentation and spelling, then inspect the console for configuration errors. Verify that no second chat formatter is replacing EssentialsX’s output.
EssentialsX reports a YAML or configuration error
Restore the last known-good backup, then reapply one change at a time. YAML is sensitive to indentation and tabs. Keep the format on one quoted line, use spaces for indentation, and ensure every opening quote has a closing quote. A malformed chat: block can prevent more than chat formatting from loading.
Another plugin changes the final appearance
Some servers run a separate chat plugin that intercepts or rewrites messages. If EssentialsX loads and its configuration is correct but the output ignores the pattern, temporarily test with the competing formatter disabled or configured not to handle chat. Keep one plugin responsible for the final format to avoid duplicated prefixes, colors, or separators.
Changes do not appear after saving
EssentialsX configuration edits require a controlled restart for a dependable result. Confirm that you edited the active server directory, not a development copy or backup, and check the file timestamp and console startup messages after restarting.
Best Value
Global format versus group-formats
| Situation | Better starting point | Reason | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| One rank or one visual identity | Global format |
One line keeps the layout consistent and is quick to change. | Every group receives the same visual treatment unless another system changes the message. |
| Several ranks with minor color differences | group-formats |
Each group can receive a distinct color while retaining the same name and message structure. | Every new or renamed group requires a matching configuration entry. |
| Many ranks with different information needs | group-formats with a documented naming scheme |
Each rank can show a different prefix, suffix, or layout. | Maintenance grows with the number of groups, and inconsistent entries are easier to create. |
| Frequent rank changes | Global format plus LuckPerms metadata |
Prefixes can change in LuckPerms without duplicating the whole layout for every group. | Ranks cannot have entirely different layouts without moving to group-specific entries. |
For most servers, start with one readable pattern and let LuckPerms provide rank text through {PREFIX}. Move to group-formats only when a group genuinely needs a different layout, not merely a different prefix.

A complete minimal configuration
The following arrangement is enough for a small Paper server that wants LuckPerms prefixes and a single consistent layout:
plugins/
EssentialsX.jar
EssentialsXChat.jar
Vault.jar
LuckPerms.jar
chat:
radius: 0
format: '{PREFIX}{DISPLAYNAME}&7: &f{MESSAGE}'
The operational sequence is:
- Place matching EssentialsX jars plus Vault and LuckPerms in
plugins/. - Start once so EssentialsX creates its folder, then stop cleanly.
- Set the
chat:format inplugins/Essentials/config.yml. - Assign prefixes to LuckPerms groups.
- Grant only the chat-formatting permissions appropriate to each group.
- Restart and test with accounts from more than one group.
If you later need rank-specific colors, replace the single format with a group-formats map whose keys exactly match the LuckPerms groups. Keep the same placeholders in each entry unless a deliberate design calls for a different set.
Maintenance after the first setup
- Update every EssentialsX module together rather than replacing only the Chat jar.
- Back up
plugins/Essentialsbefore upgrades and retain a copy of the workingconfig.yml. - Review configuration changes when moving between releases; newer versions can add or revise documented options.
- Keep Vault and LuckPerms enabled and watch the console after upgrades for dependency or compatibility messages.
- Re-test prefixes, group-specific formats, and restricted color permissions after every plugin or Minecraft-version change.
- Document your group names and the reason for each formatting permission so future administrators do not grant broad wildcard access by accident.
With the core and Chat modules matched, Vault connecting EssentialsX to LuckPerms, and a correctly indented chat: section, EssentialsX Chat provides predictable formatting without requiring a separate paid service.
