Install the Dynmap build that matches your server software, place it in the correct plugins or mods directory, restart the server, and open TCP port 8123 unless you deliberately configure another port. A new map can appear black until you render tiles; use /dynmap radiusrender 100 as a quick test, then /dynmap fullrender for full coverage.

What Dynmap does and what you need
Dynmap creates a browser-based, zoomable map of a Minecraft world. The server generates map tiles from loaded world data and serves the map through Dynmap’s built-in web server, so players can view it without installing a map client. The default address is http://server-ip:8123/.

You need administrative access to the Minecraft server files and console, permission to stop and start the server, and a network path to the web port. For a private test, a browser on the same machine can use http://localhost:8123/. Friends connecting from outside your home network need an externally reachable address, a permitted TCP port, and usually router port forwarding.
- Identify the exact Minecraft version and server implementation.
- Download the matching Dynmap plugin or mod build.
- Stop the server before copying files.
- Allow time and storage for map rendering.
- Never use a hot reload to install or repair Dynmap.

Use a normal server stop and start instead./reload your server. This will break Dynmap and a restart will be required to fix it.

Choose the correct Dynmap build
Dynmap is distributed in separate builds for Bukkit-family servers and for modded servers. A file intended for one loader is not interchangeable with another. Check both your Minecraft version and the server software before downloading.

Download from a project-linked distribution such as the official project release locations, SpigotMC, Modrinth, or CurseForge. Do not rename a plugin into a mod or place a mod JAR in plugins/; the loader determines how the file is discovered and initialized.
Install Dynmap on a Spigot, Paper, or Bukkit server
1. Stop the server cleanly
Use the host control panel’s stop action or issue the normal console stop command. Wait until the process has finished saving the world and exited. Copying a JAR while the server is running can leave the installation incomplete, and a reload is specifically unsafe for Dynmap.
2. Copy the plugin JAR
In the server’s top-level directory, open plugins/ and copy the Bukkit-family Dynmap JAR there. Do not unzip the JAR. If the directory does not exist, you are probably looking at the wrong server root or the server has not completed its first startup.

3. Start the server and read the console
Start the server normally. Watch the startup log for Dynmap initialization and for a web-server message. The Linux installation guide uses a successful bind message on 0.0.0.0:8123 as the confirmation that the web service started. A plugin load error, dependency error, or version mismatch must be fixed before testing the browser page.
4. Check the generated configuration
For Bukkit-family servers, Dynmap’s main configuration file is plugins/dynmap/configuration.txt. Keep the default webserver-port: 8123 when the port is available. If your provider has assigned a different port, change this value to the allocated port and save the file before restarting.

1. Confirm the loader and versions
Record the Minecraft version, the Forge or Fabric loader version, and any server-side requirements listed with the Dynmap release. Modded servers are less forgiving of an incorrect build: a JAR for a different loader may simply fail during startup or prevent the server from reaching a usable state.
2. Stop the server and copy the mod
After a clean shutdown, place the matching Dynmap mod JAR in the server’s mods/ directory. Leave the file as a JAR and preserve any required companion libraries or dependencies specified by that release.

3. Restart and inspect the log
Start the modded server normally and verify that Dynmap is initialized without a loader or dependency error. The exact configuration layout can differ by mod build, so use the configuration file and labels created by that release rather than copying a Bukkit-only path. The web service still needs a reachable TCP port, normally 8123 unless configured otherwise.
Configure the web server and port
Default port: TCP 8123
Dynmap’s built-in web server listens on TCP port 8123 by default. On the server itself, test http://localhost:8123/. From another device on the same network, replace localhost with the server’s private LAN address, such as 192.168.1.25. For an internet connection, use the public address that points to your network and include the port: http://public-address:8123/.
The port is independent of Minecraft’s gameplay port. Opening the Minecraft port does not automatically expose Dynmap, and exposing Dynmap’s port does not replace the gameplay port. Treat the web port as a separate TCP service in firewall and router rules.
Bind address
The bind address controls which network interfaces accept Dynmap connections. If the service is bound only to a loopback or an interface that remote clients cannot reach, the page may work on the server but fail everywhere else. When connection problems occur, the Dynmap configuration reference recommends deliberately using 0.0.0.0, subject to your host’s network and firewall policy. This listens on all available interfaces; do not use it to bypass a provider’s restrictions.

Changing the port
- Stop the server cleanly.
- Open the Dynmap configuration file. On Bukkit-family servers, use
plugins/dynmap/configuration.txt. - Locate
webserver-portand set it to the port your host or network permits. - Save the file and start the server normally.
- Confirm the startup log shows the new port, then update firewall rules, router forwarding, bookmarks, and the URL you give to players.
On shared hosting, you may not be allowed to claim 8123 yourself. Ask the provider for a secondary web-port allocation and use exactly the port they assign. A port that is free on your computer can still be blocked by the host’s network policy.
Render the map so it is not black
A black or empty map immediately after installation usually means Dynmap has no rendered tiles yet. Installation starts the web service; it does not instantly generate every block of every world.

Join the server or use the server console with the required permissions, stand near an area you recognize, and run:
/dynmap radiusrender 100
This requests a render around the player’s location with a radius of 100 blocks. Refresh the browser after the job completes. You should see terrain near that location, which confirms that the plugin or mod can read the world, generate tiles, and serve them.
Render the wider world
Once the small test works, start a broader render:
/dynmap fullrender
A full render can take substantial time and disk space, especially for large worlds or multiple dimensions. Let it run rather than repeatedly starting new renders. Keep the server online and monitor its console and storage while the map populates. If your installation contains multiple worlds, follow the command syntax and world-selection options shown by that build’s in-game help; do not assume a render of one world covers every dimension.
Open Dynmap to friends outside your network
Self-hosted server checklist
- Find the machine’s private LAN address and confirm Dynmap works locally.
- Confirm the Dynmap bind address permits the interface used for remote traffic; use
0.0.0.0when appropriate for your network. - Create a router port-forward rule for the chosen TCP web port to the server’s private address.
- Allow that TCP port through the operating system and any host firewall.
- Test from a device on a different network using
http://public-address:8123/or your changed port.
Testing from inside the same network can be misleading because some routers do not support hairpin connections. A phone using cellular data or a trusted external connection is a better test of public reachability.
Managed or shared hosting
Managed hosts often control firewall rules and port allocations. Ask for a separately reachable web port, confirm that it accepts HTTP traffic, and use that port in Dynmap’s configuration. If the provider cannot expose an additional port, Dynmap’s built-in web server may remain available only to the host’s internal network.

Use the built-in server for a straightforward installation. Consider an external server only when you already operate one and understand its file-sync, access-control, and upgrade responsibilities.
Troubleshoot the most common failures

Read the startup message before changing network settings
The console tells you whether Dynmap reached the web-server stage. If it did not, router changes cannot fix the problem. Resolve plugin/mod loading errors first; only then diagnose binding, firewall, and forwarding.
Check the exact URL
Use http://, not a guessed HTTPS address, unless you have separately configured TLS through another web service. Include the configured port when it is not the standard HTTP port. A missing port in the URL sends the browser to port 80 instead of Dynmap.

/dynmap radiusrender 100, verify visible tiles, then run/dynmap fullrender. - For internet access, verify firewall rules, router forwarding, and shared-host port policy independently.
