To sync Dropbox with Windows 11, install the Dropbox desktop app, sign in, and use its Dropbox folder in File Explorer. Then choose which files stay online-only and which are stored on your PC for offline access. The standard desktop app supports Windows 11 outside S mode; Dropbox lists ARM processor support for supported Windows versions.
Check Windows 11 compatibility
Dropbox’s standard desktop app supports Windows 10 and Windows 11, but not Windows running in S mode. Dropbox says ARM processors are supported on those Windows versions. If your PC is in S mode, check Dropbox’s separate system requirements for Dropbox Lite instead. The requirements page was updated June 30, 2026.

Install Dropbox and find your synced files
- Download and install the Dropbox desktop app.
- Sign in to your Dropbox account, or create one, and follow the installation prompts to choose what to sync. Dropbox’s instructions do not establish one fixed sequence of screens, so follow the options shown in your installer.
- Open File Explorer and locate the Dropbox folder. You can also open Dropbox from its taskbar icon.
Once set up, changes made in the Dropbox desktop app sync across the places you access your Dropbox files, including your account on dropbox.com. The desktop app overview explains its File Explorer and taskbar integration.
Choose whether files use local storage
Dropbox offers two practical availability states. Choose based on whether conserving disk space or opening files without an internet connection matters more.

To make a file or folder online-only, use the Dropbox desktop app’s online-only setting. You can also set future items added directly to the Dropbox root folder to be online-only by default. Opening an online-only item downloads it and makes it available offline, so make sure the PC has enough free space for the download. Understand offline changes
You can open available-offline files without an internet connection. If you edit a file while offline, that change will not reach your other synced devices until the PC reconnects. Dropbox says it syncs the updates automatically after the connection returns.

Check sync status and troubleshoot
Use both the per-item indicators in File Explorer and the Dropbox taskbar icon: the first helps identify a particular file’s state, while the second reports overall account sync status.

- Cloud icon: the item is synced but online-only. Opening it downloads it.
- Green check: the item is synced and available offline.
- Circular arrows: Dropbox is uploading, downloading, waiting, or encountering a sync issue. Check the item’s context rather than treating the arrows alone as proof of an error.
- Red X: the file or folder cannot update or sync.
The taskbar icon can show that sync is in progress, fully synced, or paused. If syncing is paused, changes will not update elsewhere until it resumes. Dropbox’s sync-status guide, updated August 14, 2026, describes these indicators.

File Explorer features are missing
If sync icons, Dropbox context-menu options, or the ability to open online-only files from File Explorer are missing, check whether the app was installed with administrator privileges. Dropbox says admin privileges are needed for full desktop-app functionality, including those integrations; its installation instructions cover the requirement.
