For an Atmos soundbar or AV receiver, connect Apple TV 4K to the audio device’s HDMI input, then connect the device’s HDMI output to the TV. On Apple TV, check Settings > Video and Audio > Audio Format and make sure Dolby Atmos is on under Immersive Audio. Atmos also requires a compatible signal path and a program that offers it.
Check that your devices and content support Atmos
These instructions are for Apple TV 4K. Apple lists Atmos-compatible soundbars, Atmos-enabled AV receivers, TVs that support Dolby Atmos audio, and one or two HomePod speakers among the supported setups. The exact path depends on your audio device and television.

Atmos availability also depends on the specific program. Apple TV 4K automatically selects the highest audio quality supported by the setup and available from the content, so a compatible system alone does not make every title play in Atmos. Apple’s setup guidance is available in its Apple TV 4K audio format guide.
Connect a soundbar or AV receiver
- Connect Apple TV 4K to an HDMI input on the Atmos-compatible soundbar or AV receiver.
- Connect the soundbar or receiver’s HDMI output to an HDMI input on the TV.
- Use the soundbar or receiver’s input selection to choose the HDMI input connected to Apple TV.
Apple says most TVs do not pass Dolby Atmos through to soundbars or receivers, and Apple TV 4K’s high-bandwidth Atmos does not work over ordinary ARC. For this soundbar/receiver route, connect Apple TV directly to the audio device rather than relying on the TV to send its audio back over ARC. See Apple’s soundbar and AV receiver setup instructions.

Check video pass-through before choosing this route
Some Atmos-capable soundbars and receivers cannot pass through HDR10 or Dolby Vision. If yours cannot pass the video format you want, Apple’s guidance describes connecting Apple TV 4K directly to the audio device for Atmos or directly to the TV for HDR or Dolby Vision. Getting both depends on the TV, receiver, or soundbar chain supporting Atmos and the desired video formats.
Apple requires an HDMI cable and recommends a compatible Ultra High Speed HDMI cable when connecting Apple TV 4K to a 4K HDR TV. A suitable cable does not by itself guarantee Atmos; the devices, routing, and program must also support it. See Apple’s Apple TV 4K setup guide.

Enable and verify Dolby Atmos
- On Apple TV 4K, open Settings > Video and Audio > Audio Format.
- Under Immersive Audio, check that Dolby Atmos is on.
- Open the audio information for the program you want to watch and look for the Dolby Atmos indicator. The route to audio information varies between Apple TV+ and other apps.
If Immersive Audio or Dolby Atmos is missing, Apple says the home entertainment setup may need to be changed. If the setting is present but a title is not playing in Atmos, check that title’s audio information: the format must be available for that program as well as supported by your setup.

Use HomePod for home cinema audio
Apple supports one or two HomePod speakers for Apple TV 4K home cinema audio. Apple TV and HomePod (or the stereo pair) must be on the latest software and assigned to the same room in the Home app. When prompted, choose Use as TV Speakers. If there is no prompt, set the speakers under Settings > Video and Audio > Audio Output. Apple documents this setup in its HomePod home cinema audio guide.
HomePod mini does not support Dolby Atmos 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound, and other AirPlay-compatible speakers are not supported for this home cinema mode.

Use eARC to send TV audio to HomePod
Apple TV 4K (2nd generation or later) can use eARC to pass audio from a compatible TV or another HDMI device connected to that TV to HomePod. This is a specific HomePod setup, not a workaround for the ordinary ARC limitation in the soundbar/receiver route.

- Connect Apple TV 4K to the TV’s HDMI port labeled eARC.
- Enable HDMI-CEC on the TV and choose HomePod as the default audio output.
- On Apple TV, open Settings > Video and Audio > Audio Output > Audio Return Channel and turn on Play Television Audio.
- If needed, enable eARC in the TV’s own settings.
Troubleshoot when Atmos is not showing
- Atmos or Immersive Audio is absent: Recheck that Apple TV 4K is connected through an Atmos-capable audio system using a supported path. For a soundbar or receiver, connect Apple TV directly to its HDMI input instead of relying on ordinary ARC from the TV.
- The system is compatible, but one title lacks Atmos: Check the title’s audio information for the Dolby Atmos indicator. Apple TV selects the highest quality supported by both the setup and the available content.
- Atmos is enabled but playback still lacks it: Check that Quick Start is on at Settings > Apps > iTunes Films and TV Shows > Quick Start.
- You are using HomePod: Confirm the speakers and Apple TV are updated, assigned to the same Home app room, and selected as the audio output. For TV audio over eARC, verify the TV’s eARC connection and settings, HDMI-CEC, and Apple TV’s Play Television Audio option.
- Atmos works but HDR or Dolby Vision does not: Check whether the soundbar or receiver passes through the desired video format. The full chain must support both that format and Atmos.
