On Ubuntu, per-user storage limits require four things: the correct filesystem mount option, initialized quota metadata, active quota enforcement, and limits assigned to each account. For ext4 and other non-XFS filesystems, install the quota utilities, add usrquota to the target entry in /etc/fstab, remount it, run quotacheck, enable quotas with quotaon, and assign limits with setquota. XFS is different: quota accounting and enforcement are enabled at mount time, and quotaon is not used.

What a disk quota controls
A quota limits resources consumed by a user on one filesystem. Ubuntu can track two separate resources:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Blocks: the amount of filesystem space allocated to the user. Quota tools normally express block limits in 1 KiB quota blocks, so a value of 1048576 represents approximately 1 GiB.
- Inodes: the number of files and directories owned by the user. An account can run out of inodes even when free space remains.
Each resource can have a soft limit and a hard limit. A soft limit is a warning threshold that can be exceeded temporarily while a grace period is in effect. A hard limit is an allocation ceiling: once it is reached, operations that need additional blocks or inodes fail. Limits apply to the filesystem named in the command, not automatically to every mounted filesystem.
Quotas do not delete files or shrink existing data. If an account already exceeds a newly assigned limit, its current files remain; the user must remove data or an administrator must raise the limit before additional allocations can succeed.

Prerequisites and the filesystem decision
You need root or sudo access, the Ubuntu quota package, and a clear mountpoint to limit. Determine the filesystem that actually stores the users’ data before editing configuration:
sudo apt install quota
findmnt -no FSTYPE,TARGET
findmnt -T /home -no FSTYPE,TARGET,OPTIONS
Replace /home in later commands with the mountpoint that contains the users’ files. If /home is only a directory inside the root filesystem, the quota belongs on /, not on a nonexistent separate /home mount.

| Filesystem | Quota data and activation | Important consequence |
|---|---|---|
| ext4 and other non-XFS filesystems supported by the quota package | External files such as aquota.user at the filesystem root; enable with quotaon. |
The mount must include a user-quota option such as usrquota before quota checking can work. |
| XFS | Quota information is filesystem metadata maintained internally with journaling. | Enable accounting and limit enforcement through the XFS mount option; do not create aquota.user files or use quotaon. |
Set up quotas on ext4 or another non-XFS filesystem
1. Back up and edit /etc/fstab
Keep a copy of the file so a bad option can be reverted from a recovery shell:
sudo cp -a /etc/fstab /etc/fstab.before-quota
Open the file and add usrquota to the comma-separated options for the target mount. Preserve the existing device identifier, filesystem type, dump value, and filesystem-check order. A separate home partition might look like this after the change:
UUID=existing-uuid /home ext4 defaults,usrquota 0 2
Do not add usrquota to an unrelated mount. If you also need group quotas, add grpquota; user quotas and group quotas are independent features.
2. Remount the filesystem
Apply the new option without rebooting when the filesystem and kernel permit a remount:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
sudo mount -o remount /home
For a root filesystem, use sudo mount -o remount /. Confirm that the active mount options include the quota option rather than assuming that an edited fstab is already active:
findmnt -T /home -no FSTYPE,TARGET,OPTIONS
If the remount fails, inspect the error before continuing. Correct the fstab entry, then remount again or reboot during a maintenance window. A reboot is also appropriate when the filesystem or mount arrangement does not support changing quota options online.

3. Create or refresh user quota metadata
With the filesystem mounted and the quota option active, scan it to create or update user quota information:
sudo quotacheck -cum /home
In this invocation, -c asks for quota files to be created, -u selects user quota data, and -m allows the check to proceed on the mounted filesystem. The exact option set available depends on the installed quota package, so consult man quotacheck if your package reports an unsupported flag.
The scan reads ownership and allocation information. Avoid running it while a busy service is creating, deleting, or rewriting large numbers of files; concurrent changes can make the result inconsistent. Stop or quiesce write-heavy applications when practical, and ensure the filesystem has enough free space for its metadata files. For a routine refresh after the initial setup, run the package-supported check mode without forcing creation unless you specifically need to rebuild the files.
For version-2 user quotas on non-XFS filesystems, the resulting file is normally named aquota.user and resides at the root of the quota-enabled filesystem. It is not stored in an arbitrary administrator directory.
4. Enable enforcement with quotaon
Turn on user quotas and request a status message:
sudo quotaon -v /home
The verbose output should identify the selected filesystem and indicate that user quotas are enabled. To check an existing mount without changing its state, use:
sudo quotaon -p /home
sudo quotaon -av
The first command prints the status for one mount. The second checks all quota-enabled entries known to the system. If the expected mount is absent, return to the active mount options and quota-file checks before assigning limits.

setquota accepts the account name, block soft limit, block hard limit, inode soft limit, inode hard limit, and filesystem. This example gives user alice a 1 GiB block soft limit, a 1.2 GiB block hard limit, and no inode limit:
sudo setquota -u alice 1048576 1258291 0 0 /home
Values are quota blocks and inode counts. A value of 0 means unlimited for that resource in the quota tools. Choose limits that match your policy rather than copying the example. For a 100,000-file ceiling with a 1 GiB/1.2 GiB space policy, the command would be:

Setting equal soft and hard inode limits makes the inode threshold effectively a hard ceiling. If you want a warning period for file count, set a lower inode soft limit and a higher hard limit, just as you do for blocks.
6. Verify the account and the filesystem report
Inspect one user’s usage and limits:
sudo quota -u alice
The report shows current block and inode consumption alongside the configured limits and any grace information. For an administrator-wide view of users on the mount, run:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemssudo repquota -u /home
Compare the report with the policy you intended. A zero limit displayed for a resource means that resource is not constrained. Test with a non-critical account or a temporary limit before imposing a strict ceiling on production users; a hard-limit failure is normally returned by the application as an out-of-space or quota error.
Choosing practical limits
Separate space policy from file-count policy
Block limits are appropriate when the concern is capacity: home directories, uploaded media, build artifacts, or mail spools. Inode limits protect the filesystem from a user creating millions of tiny files, which can exhaust directory or inode resources while many gigabytes remain free. Decide whether you need one resource or both; assigning an inode limit of zero leaves file count unrestricted.
Use soft limits for warnings and hard limits for protection
A common policy is a lower soft block limit and a higher hard block limit. The user can temporarily cross the soft threshold during its grace period, while the hard threshold prevents indefinite growth. Grace periods are maintained by the quota system and can be inspected in quota reports; configure their duration with the quota administration tools appropriate to your Ubuntu release. A hard limit with no grace is suitable for services that must never exceed a fixed allocation, but it can interrupt writes abruptly.
Apply limits to the correct scope
User quotas follow file ownership. If several accounts write through a shared service account, the service account consumes the quota. Group quotas require the group quota mount option and group-specific administration; enabling only usrquota does not limit a group as a whole. Some filesystems also support project quotas for directory trees, but project support and commands are filesystem-specific and should not be mixed with the non-XFS user-quota procedure.

XFS treats quota information as filesystem metadata and uses journaling for consistency. It does not use external aquota.user files. The Ubuntu quota documentation describes XFS as a special case: quota accounting and enforcement must be enabled through the filesystem’s mount options, and the quotaon utility cannot enable them.
Enable XFS user accounting at mount time
Edit the XFS entry in /etc/fstab and add the XFS user-quota mount option supported by your Ubuntu release (commonly written as usrquota or uquota). Keep the existing XFS options, then remount or reboot as required by the host:

sudo cp -a /etc/fstab /etc/fstab.before-xfs-quota
sudoedit /etc/fstab
sudo mount -o remount /home
findmnt -T /home -no FSTYPE,TARGET,OPTIONS
The final findmnt output must show an XFS filesystem with the user-quota option active. If a remount cannot change the option, reboot after validating /etc/fstab.
Set and report limits with XFS tools
After accounting is active, use xfs_quota and the XFS quota format documented on the system. For example, an administrator can use the XFS report command to inspect usage:
sudo xfs_quota -x -c 'report -h' /home
Limit syntax is XFS-specific and differs from the positional arguments accepted by setquota. Read man xfs_quota on the server and use its user-limit command to set block or inode soft and hard values. Do not run quotacheck to create aquota.user files on XFS, and do not expect quotaon -v to activate XFS quotas.
Why quotacheck says the filesystem is not quota-enabled
This message means the filesystem presented to quotacheck does not currently advertise the required quota option. Work through the checks in order:
- Confirm the target mount: run
findmnt -T /path/to/data -no FSTYPE,TARGET,OPTIONS. A path inside/must be checked against the root mount, while a separate/homepartition must be checked against/home. - Inspect the active options: verify that
usrquotaappears for a non-XFS filesystem. An option typed only in/etc/fstabis not active until a successful remount or reboot. - Check the filesystem type: if the output says XFS, stop using the external-file workflow. Enable XFS accounting at mount time and administer it with XFS quota tools.
- Remount and recheck: run
sudo mount -o remount /mountpoint, then repeatfindmnt. Fix syntax or ordering errors in/etc/fstabif the option still does not appear. - Run the check against the same mountpoint: after activation, use
sudo quotacheck -cum /mountpoint. A quota file created for one filesystem does not enable quotas on another.
If the error persists on a non-XFS filesystem, review man quotacheck for the options provided by your installed package, inspect system logs for mount errors, and ensure the filesystem is writable enough for quota metadata. Never delete quota files while enforcement is active without a recovery plan; disabling quotas, rebuilding metadata, and re-enabling them should be a controlled maintenance operation.
Common operational pitfalls
Editing the wrong mount entry
Servers often have separate mounts for /home, application data, backups, and containers. A quota on /home cannot limit files written to another mount, even when the path looks related. Resolve the path with findmnt -T before every new quota policy.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Forgetting to enable quotas after a reboot
The mount option controls whether quota support is available, while quotaon controls activation for non-XFS filesystems. Confirm both after boot with findmnt and quotaon -p. If your distribution uses startup configuration to enable quotas automatically, verify that the service or boot action is present rather than assuming it.
Scanning during heavy writes
quotacheck derives usage by scanning the filesystem. Run it during a quiet period or stop write-heavy jobs temporarily. A scan taken while ownership and allocation are changing can produce a report that does not match the final on-disk state.
Best Value
Confusing a soft warning with a hard failure
Crossing a soft limit is not necessarily an immediate write failure; the grace period determines how long the account may remain over it. Crossing a hard limit, or exhausting the grace period, can prevent new allocations. Explain this distinction to users so they do not treat every warning as proof that the filesystem is full.
Assuming quotas replace backups or monitoring
Quotas control allocation; they do not protect against deletion, corruption, or hardware failure. Keep normal backups and monitor quota reports. Periodically run repquota -u for each managed filesystem, alert before users reach hard limits, and review limits when workloads change.
A repeatable administration checklist
- Identify the filesystem and mountpoint with
findmnt. - Determine whether it is XFS or a non-XFS filesystem.
- Install the quota utilities with
sudo apt install quota. - For non-XFS, back up
/etc/fstab, addusrquota, and remount. - Confirm the active option with
findmnt -T. - For non-XFS, run
quotacheckduring a quiet period and then enable the mount withquotaon. - Assign block and, if needed, inode soft and hard limits with
setquota. - For XFS, skip external quota files and
quotaon; use the XFS mount option andxfs_quota. - Verify individual users with
quota -uand review the filesystem withrepquota -uor the XFS reporting command. - Document the mount, limits, grace policy, and recovery steps for the next administrator.
Frequently asked questions
Will assigning a lower quota automatically remove a user’s existing files?
No. Quota changes do not delete data. They change what the account may allocate next; an account already over its limit must reduce usage or receive a temporary increase.
Why can a user still read files after reaching a hard limit?
Reading existing data does not allocate additional blocks or inodes. Operations that create, extend, or otherwise allocate storage are the ones most likely to fail at the hard limit.
Can I limit users on several filesystems with one command?
No. A quota record is associated with one filesystem. Assign and verify the policy separately for every mount that stores the user’s data.
Do I need both block and inode limits?
Only if you need protection against both capacity growth and excessive file counts. Set the unused resource to zero when your policy intentionally leaves it unlimited.
What should I do before changing a production quota?
Record the current quota and repquota output, confirm the mountpoint, make a tested backup of /etc/fstab, and schedule changes that could reject writes during a maintenance window.
