DiscordSRV connects a Bukkit-compatible Minecraft server to Discord through a server-side plugin and a Discord bot. To set it up, install the plugin in the server’s plugins directory, create and configure a Discord application, map Minecraft channels to Discord channel IDs, then test the bridge. Account linking is optional unless you enable it in linking.yml.

DiscordSRV is a server-side Minecraft plugin. It is not a client-side mod: players do not install anything in their Minecraft client. The plugin runs on Minecraft server software built around the Bukkit API and relays supported server activity through a Discord bot.
The official initial-setup requirements are:
- A Bukkit-compatible server platform such as CraftBukkit, Spigot, or Paper.
- Permission to read the server console and startup logs.
- Permission to add files to the server and edit configuration files.
- Administrative access to the Discord server and to the Discord Developer Portal.
- A dependable way to restart the Minecraft server after plugin or configuration changes.
If your host does not expose the server’s file manager, console, or restart controls, you may not be able to complete setup yourself. Ask the host whether it supports Bukkit-compatible plugins and gives you access to the plugins directory, logs, and full restarts.

Choose the right server platform

Keep a copy of the original configuration files before making edits. That gives you a quick way to undo a syntax mistake and makes it easier to identify which setting changed when troubleshooting.
Install DiscordSRV on the Minecraft server
1. Stop or prepare the server safely
Use your host’s normal console or control panel to stop the server, or follow the host’s documented procedure for adding plugins while it is offline. Do not replace files while the server is writing configuration data. If you cannot stop it manually, use a controlled restart and wait for the server to finish shutting down before uploading files.
2. Put the plugin JAR in the correct directory
- Obtain the DiscordSRV plugin JAR named in the format
DiscordSRV-Build-VERSION_NUMBER.jar. - Open the root directory of the Minecraft server—the directory containing folders such as
worldandplugins. - Open
plugins. If the folder does not exist, the server has usually not completed its first startup; start it once, let it finish, and stop it cleanly. - Upload or copy the DiscordSRV JAR directly into
plugins. Do not put it in a nested folder such asplugins/DiscordSRV/. - Start or restart the server.
After the first successful load, DiscordSRV creates a folder named DiscordSRV inside plugins. Its main configuration file is plugins/DiscordSRV/config.yml. Open that file with a plain-text editor rather than a word processor.
3. Check the startup log
Watch the console during the restart. A plugin that is in the wrong directory, has an incompatible server environment, or cannot be loaded will normally produce an error or stack trace. Record the first DiscordSRV-related error rather than only the final shutdown message; the first error usually identifies the cause.
Create the Discord application and bot
DiscordSRV communicates with Discord through a bot belonging to a Discord application. The Minecraft plugin cannot bridge messages until that application is created, its bot is configured, and the bot has joined your Discord server.
1. Create an application
- Open the Discord Developer Portal and create a new application.
- Use the application’s bot configuration to create or reveal its bot user and token controls.
- In the application’s Installation tab, disable User Install.
- Set Install Link to None, as required by DiscordSRV’s setup documentation.
Keep the bot token private. Treat it like a password: do not paste it into chat, publish it in a screenshot, or commit it to a public repository. If it is exposed, regenerate it in the Developer Portal and update the server configuration with the replacement token.

2. Enable the required Gateway Intents
DiscordSRV’s documentation requires the privileged Gateway Intents used by the plugin. In the bot settings, enable every privileged intent identified by the current DiscordSRV instructions, then save the change. If an intent is missing, the bot may appear online while message bridging, member data, synchronization, or presence-related features fail.
Do not assume that an online status proves the intents are correct. Verify the toggles in the Developer Portal whenever DiscordSRV reports missing events or behaves as though it cannot read the required Discord data.
3. Add the bot to your Discord server
Use the application’s installation flow to add the bot to the Discord server where you want the bridge. Select the server deliberately: adding the bot to a different server will not make the Minecraft channel mapping work. During installation, grant the read and send permissions documented by DiscordSRV for the channels it must bridge. If you intend to synchronize additional features, grant only the extra permissions that the relevant DiscordSRV documentation calls for.
After installation, confirm that the bot is visible in the intended server and that it can access the target channels. A bot that can connect but cannot read or send in a channel will produce an apparently partial setup.
Map Minecraft channels to Discord channels
Channel mapping is configured in plugins/DiscordSRV/config.yml. The left side of each mapping is a Minecraft channel name; the right side is the numeric Discord channel ID. Discord channel names do not belong on the right side.
1. Turn on Discord Developer Mode
- Open Discord’s user settings.
- Find the advanced settings and enable Developer Mode.
- Return to the target Discord text channel.
- Right-click the channel and choose Copy ID.
- Repeat for every Discord channel you want to map.
The copied value is a long numeric string. Copy it exactly, including every digit, and do not add a channel name, hashtag, or quotation mark outside the configuration syntax.

2. Edit the Channels setting
The documentation’s example format is:
Channels: {"global": "219559668236681216", "admin": "221419146028646401"}In this example, Minecraft’s global channel maps to Discord channel ID 219559668236681216, while Minecraft’s admin channel maps to 221419146028646401. Your actual Minecraft channel names and Discord IDs will differ.
The first channel pair is the main channel. Start with the main public chat before adding administrative or specialty channels. Keep the mapping on one valid YAML line unless the version of the generated configuration explicitly shows another supported layout.

The bot must be able to read and send in each mapped Discord channel. A server-wide role permission can still be overridden by a channel-specific deny, a category permission, or a private-channel restriction. Check the effective permissions on the exact channels whose IDs you copied.
After editing YAML, save the file without changing indentation or inserting smart quotes. Some DiscordSRV changes can be loaded with a reload, but settings documented as restart-dependent require a full server restart.
Configure the invite and test the bridge
Set an invite link (optional)
If you want DiscordSRV to show an invitation to your community, configure DiscordInviteLink in config.yml. Leave it unset if you do not want the plugin to advertise an invite. Use an invite that points to the same Discord server where the bot is installed.
Run the player-facing commands
Once the server has restarted and the bot is online, test from Minecraft:

/discordor/discordsrvopens DiscordSRV’s general player information or invite response./discordsrv linkdisplays the account-linking instructions for the player./discordsrv linkedchecks whether the executing player is linked.
Send a normal message in the mapped Minecraft channel and verify that it appears in the mapped Discord channel. Reply in Discord and verify the reverse direction. Test with a player account that has the same ordinary permissions as your community members; an administrator can mask a missing channel permission.
Staff and diagnostic commands
Staff permissions include commands that help maintain the bridge:
/discordsrv resyncrequests a synchronization operation when Discord and Minecraft state have diverged./discordsrv reloadreloads settings that support reloading without a full restart./discordsrv debuggerenables diagnostic output for relevant categories, including message flow, group synchronization, presence, or voice behavior.
Grant these commands only to trusted staff. Use the debugger while reproducing a problem, capture the relevant console output, and then disable or reduce diagnostic logging when finished so routine logs remain readable.

Account linking is optional by default. Linking associates a Minecraft player with a Discord account so DiscordSRV can identify the same person across both services and apply features that depend on that association.
Let players link voluntarily
- Make sure the bot is online and can send messages in the Discord channel where players will receive instructions.
- Have the player run
/discordsrv linkin Minecraft. - Follow the code-and-instruction flow DiscordSRV displays for that player.
- After completion, have the player run
/discordsrv linkedto confirm the status.
If the player receives no instructions, check the bot’s channel permissions, the bot token and intents, and the server console for a linking error. Linking cannot complete if the bot cannot communicate with the player through the configured Discord server.

DiscordSRV can prevent unlinked players from entering the Minecraft server. This is separate from voluntary linking and should be enabled only when every player is expected to have access to the required Discord server and bot.
Enable the gate
- Open
plugins/DiscordSRV/linking.yml. - Set
Enabled: true. - Save the file.
- Restart the Minecraft server; do not rely on a reload for a setting documented as restart-dependent.
When an unlinked player tries to join, DiscordSRV kicks that player with a message containing instructions and a code to send to the bot. The player must complete the linking flow and try joining again.
Add Discord-server or role requirements
The linking configuration can additionally require that a linked player belong to selected Discord servers and/or hold specified subscriber roles. These checks are useful when access should be limited to members of a particular community or role group, but they add another failure point: a player can be successfully linked and still be rejected if the required server membership or role is absent.
Before enabling these restrictions, document which Discord server and roles are required, make sure the bot can inspect the relevant membership information, and test with one ordinary player account. Keep an administrator or emergency account available so staff are not locked out by a mistaken requirement.
Troubleshoot the most common failures
The plugin does not load
- Confirm that the JAR is directly inside the server’s
pluginsdirectory, not in a subfolder. - Check that the filename is a complete DiscordSRV build JAR rather than a partial upload or archive.
- Restart the server and inspect the startup log for the first DiscordSRV error.
- Verify that the server software is CraftBukkit, Spigot, Paper, or another platform whose Bukkit API compatibility has been confirmed.
If no DiscordSRV folder is generated after a restart, focus on the startup log and file placement before editing configuration. The configuration directory is created by a successful first load.
The bot is offline or messages never arrive
- Recheck the bot token in the generated DiscordSRV configuration.
- Verify the required privileged Gateway Intents in the Discord Developer Portal.
- Confirm that the bot was installed in the intended Discord server.
- Check that the bot can read and send in the exact mapped channels.
- Use
/discordsrv debuggerwith the message-flow category while sending a test message.
An online bot with no bridged messages usually indicates a token, intent, channel-ID, or permission problem rather than a Minecraft client problem.

Messages go to the wrong channel
- Enable Developer Mode and copy the ID from the intended Discord channel again.
- Check that the left side of each
Channelsentry uses the Minecraft channel name. - Check that the right side uses the numeric Discord ID, not a readable Discord channel name.
- Confirm that the first channel pair is the one you intend to use as the main channel.
- Save the YAML and perform the restart required for the changed setting.
Reload appears to do nothing
/discordsrv reload does not replace a full restart for settings that DiscordSRV documents as restart-dependent. If a change to channel mapping, linking enforcement, or another setting has no effect after reload, stop the server cleanly and start it again, then inspect the startup log.
Linking or mandatory linking fails
- Confirm that the bot can send the linking instructions and receive the player’s response.
- Have the player run
/discordsrv linkagain and use the newly displayed code. - Use
/discordsrv linkedto distinguish an unlinked account from a completed link. - If server or role requirements are enabled, verify membership in every required Discord server and possession of each required role.
- Temporarily test with the additional membership and role restrictions disabled, then re-enable them one at a time to isolate the failing requirement.
Choose an appropriate setup policy

When selecting managed Minecraft server hosting, verify DiscordSRV compatibility for the host’s Bukkit-based software and confirm that you can upload JAR files, edit config.yml and linking.yml, read logs, and perform full restarts. A host that offers only limited plugin installation or no console access will make diagnosis difficult.
Recommended first-run checklist
- Confirm the server runs CraftBukkit, Spigot, or Paper and that you can edit files and read logs.
- Place the DiscordSRV build JAR directly in
plugins. - Restart and verify that the
plugins/DiscordSRVdirectory and configuration files appear. - Create the Discord application and bot.
- Disable User Install and set Install Link to None in the application’s Installation tab.
- Enable the privileged Gateway Intents required by the current DiscordSRV documentation.
- Add the bot to the correct Discord server with the documented read and send permissions.
- Enable Discord Developer Mode and copy the numeric IDs of the target channels.
- Map Minecraft channel names to those IDs in
config.yml. - Configure
DiscordInviteLinkonly if you want an invite shown. - Restart, test both Minecraft-to-Discord and Discord-to-Minecraft messages, and inspect logs for errors.
- Test
/discordsrv linkand/discordsrv linkedwith a normal player account. - If required, set
Enabled: trueinlinking.yml, configure any membership or role checks, and restart before testing the join gate.
With those steps complete, DiscordSRV has the four pieces it needs: a Bukkit-compatible plugin installation, a working Discord bot, correctly mapped numeric channel IDs, and permissions that match the features you enabled.
