To get Craigslist email alerts, run a search on the right local Craigslist site, save it, then enable its alert in your account. Alerts are tied to saved searches—not a general notification for every new post—and Craigslist does not promise a fixed delivery interval.
Set up a Craigslist email alert
- Choose the location and run your search. Open the Craigslist site for the area you want, then set the keywords, category, and other criteria. Check the results first to make sure the search is useful.
- Save the search. On the results page, click save search, near the top right. You may need to log in. Craigslist explains saved searches on its Saved Searches help page.
- Turn on its alert. Open your account and go to the searches tab. Find the saved search and check the box in its alert column. Craigslist says it sends a welcome email when you sign up for an alert; see Search Alerts.
- Check your email. Look for the welcome message. If it does not arrive, check spam or junk before assuming the alert was not enabled. Craigslist’s email troubleshooting guidance directs users with delivery problems to check those folders.
What Craigslist alerts send—and when
Craigslist checks for matches based on the results from the previous alert: fewer results lead to more frequent searches. The help page gives no fixed interval, so do not count on alerts arriving instantly or at a particular hourly or daily schedule. Each alert email contains up to 20 results, with the most recent first. These details are on Craigslist’s Search Alerts help page.

An alert may show a renewed, reposted, or edited post if it now matches the saved search. That means an item appearing in an alert is not necessarily a listing that was published for the first time. Craigslist describes this behavior, as well as a search syntax caveat, in its alert guidance.
Fix search issues and change an alert
If a search containing “&” behaves unexpectedly
Craigslist says a saved search containing the “&” symbol searches only the text before that symbol. Use boolean logic to modify results instead of putting “&” in the saved search text.

If you want different search criteria
Craigslist does not let you edit a saved search in place. Run and save a replacement search with the criteria you want, then delete the old saved search. This avoids leaving the old query active by mistake.
If you want to stop an alert
Choose one of these options:
- Click Unsubscribe from this alert in an alert email.
- In your account’s searches tab, uncheck the alert box for that saved search.
- Delete the saved search if you no longer need it.
Craigslist lists these options in its Search Alerts help.
