You can set up a classic Chromecast without a remote using the Google Home app on a phone or tablet. Chromecast with Google TV is different: its initial on-screen setup uses the Chromecast Voice Remote, so Google Home may not get you past every step if the remote is missing. First identify which device you have, then follow the matching instructions.
Identify your Chromecast
A classic Chromecast is a cast-only dongle: you choose video on a phone or computer and send it to the TV. Chromecast with Google TV has an on-screen interface and a Voice Remote. The setup process depends on which one you own.

Set up a classic Chromecast without a remote
The classic Chromecast setup flow uses Google Home on a phone or tablet; it does not require a physical remote. Follow Google’s Chromecast quick-start instructions.
- Connect the Chromecast to an HDMI input on your TV.
- Connect its USB power cable and power it using the included AC adapter plugged into a wall outlet.
- Install or open Google Home on your phone or tablet, then follow the app’s prompts to set up the Chromecast.
- When setup is complete, cast from a Chromecast-enabled app or Chrome.
Set up Chromecast with Google TV when the remote is missing
Google’s setup instructions for Chromecast with Google TV HD and 4K include the Voice Remote for initial TV navigation. The TV portion involves powering on the device, waiting for the remote to pair, and choosing a language. Google Home handles a phone-based portion: the app can find the device, after which you scan the TV’s QR code or enter the setup code manually. Google also documents completing setup on the TV with the Voice Remote instead of a phone. See Google’s Chromecast with Google TV setup guide.

If the device is waiting for on-screen input and you cannot continue without navigating the TV, use a compatible replacement Chromecast Voice Remote. Check that it works with your specific HD or 4K model before buying. Google’s instructions do not establish that Google Home can replace the remote at every stage of a first-time setup.

- Move the phone or tablet closer to the Wi-Fi router and check that the signal is strong.
- Make sure the Wi-Fi network name is broadcast. If it is hidden, enter its details manually during setup.
- If you plan to connect the Chromecast to a 5 GHz network, check that the phone supports 5 GHz Wi-Fi.
- Check phone settings that can affect discovery, including Bluetooth on iOS and location on applicable Android versions.
- Toggle the phone’s Wi-Fi, force-close and reopen Google Home, or try setup from another phone or tablet.
- Restart the router or streaming device. If discovery still fails, follow the factory-reset directions for your exact Chromecast generation; reset controls and LED behavior vary by model.
When Ethernet can help
Google documents Ethernet adapters for Chromecast Ultra and Chromecast with Google TV as an alternative to Wi-Fi. The adapter connects the Chromecast to a functioning router, while setup still uses an Android or iOS mobile device. See Google’s Ethernet adapter instructions and Chromecast connectivity information to check model support. Ethernet can address Wi-Fi or network reliability; it does not provide remote control or bypass a blocked Google TV setup screen.
