- A 64-bit Debian-based Linux VPS. Google’s documented example uses a Debian Linux boot disk; Canonical’s instructions target Ubuntu 22.04 LTS.
- SSH access with an account that can run
sudo. - A local computer with a current web browser and internet access. You use this computer to authorize and open the remote desktop.
- Enough VPS resources for a graphical session. The official instructions do not publish a universal CPU, RAM, bandwidth, or latency requirement, so select a plan appropriate for the applications you intend to run rather than relying on a generic benchmark.
The package and supported-release details can change. If a vendor page presents a newer command or package for your distribution, use that current command instead of an old copied URL.
Understand the two sides of the connection
The VPS is the host. It runs the Chrome Remote Desktop service, an X11 desktop environment, and the applications you want to control. Your local computer is the client; it uses the Chrome Remote Desktop website to authorize the host and display its session. Installing only a browser or only the host package is not enough: a headless server still needs a desktop session that the host service can launch.

Keep SSH available while configuring the machine. SSH is the recovery path if the graphical session fails, and it lets you inspect systemd and journal logs without depending on the remote desktop itself.
Install Chrome Remote Desktop on the VPS
Connect to the server over SSH and update its package metadata. Google’s repository method installs the signing key, adds the stable repository, and installs the host package without waiting for a keyboard-layout prompt:
curl https://dl.google.com/linux/linux_signing_key.pub
| sudo gpg --dearmor -o /etc/apt/trusted.gpg.d/chrome-remote-desktop.gpg
echo "deb [arch=amd64] https://dl.google.com/linux/chrome-remote-desktop/deb stable main"
| sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/chrome-remote-desktop.list
sudo apt-get update
sudo DEBIAN_FRONTEND=noninteractive apt-get install --assume-yes chrome-remote-desktop
The DEBIAN_FRONTEND=noninteractive setting is useful on a virtual machine with no physically connected keyboard because it suppresses the interactive keyboard-layout question.
After installation, let apt finish completely before starting authorization. If the repository reports an architecture or release mismatch, stop and use the package instructions for the VPS’s actual 64-bit Debian or Ubuntu release rather than forcing an incompatible package.
Ubuntu’s direct-package option
Canonical also documents downloading the current amd64 Debian package and installing the local file:
sudo apt-get install --assume-yes ./chrome-remote-desktop_current_amd64.deb
That command assumes the file has already been downloaded into the current directory. Use the package URL and release instructions shown on the current Ubuntu documentation when obtaining it; package names and locations can change. Do not install both an unrelated third-party build and Google’s package at the same time, since that can make later upgrades and service troubleshooting ambiguous.
Choose and configure a desktop environment
A headless VPS has no graphical session until you install one. Chrome Remote Desktop requires an X Window System desktop environment and a window manager. Google lists Xfce, Cinnamon, GNOME, GNOME Classic, and KDE Plasma as possible choices. The service does not support 3D graphics acceleration, so disable 3D features or avoid configurations that require them.
| Desktop | When it fits | Important limitation or setup concern |
|---|---|---|
| Xfce | Best default for a VPS and slower links; its interface has relatively few animations and graphical effects. | Install XScreenSaver and use the documented session file so Light Locker does not leave an unusable blank screen. |
| Cinnamon | A familiar desktop when you prefer its interface and the VPS can handle its graphical workload. | Avoid or disable 3D-dependent features; select the correct session command. |
| GNOME or GNOME Classic | Useful when you already administer GNOME systems or need its workflow. | Configure the session explicitly and avoid 3D acceleration. |
| KDE Plasma | Suitable when KDE tools are required. | Configure a compatible session and avoid 3D acceleration; its package footprint can be larger than Xfce’s. |
These are configuration trade-offs, not performance benchmarks. The official material does not provide generic VPS CPU, memory, bandwidth, or latency measurements for any of them.
Choose one environment first and get a basic session working before adding another. Multiple desktops introduce multiple .desktop session names and may install competing display managers. That makes it harder to tell whether a failure is caused by the host service, the selected session, or a login manager.
Install the efficient Xfce session
For a Debian- or Ubuntu-based VPS, Google’s efficient Xfce recipe installs the desktop, a base desktop theme, D-Bus support for X11, and XScreenSaver:

sudo DEBIAN_FRONTEND=noninteractive
apt install --assume-yes xfce4 desktop-base dbus-x11 xscreensaver
sudo bash -c 'echo "exec /etc/X11/Xsession /usr/bin/xfce4-session" > /etc/chrome-remote-desktop-session'
sudo systemctl disable lightdm.service
The session file tells Chrome Remote Desktop exactly which desktop to launch. XScreenSaver is not cosmetic here: Google’s instructions call for it because Xfce’s default Light Locker can produce a blank screen that cannot be unlocked in a remote session. Disabling lightdm.service prevents a conflicting display manager from trying to own the graphical login on a headless host.
If you want the fuller Xfce application collection rather than the lean package set, the optional task-xfce-desktop package installs that suite. It is not required for the basic remote desktop.
When the VPS already has multiple desktops
If several desktop environments are installed, Chrome Help documents a per-user file at $HOME/.chrome-remote-desktop-session. Put an Xsession command based on the Exec= line in the selected desktop’s .desktop file. For example, a Cinnamon session can be selected with:
exec /etc/X11/Xsession 'gnome-session --session=cinnamon'
Replace the session name with one that is actually installed on the VPS. A command copied from an absent desktop will cause the host to start and then exit, often appearing as a blank or immediately disconnected session.
The system-wide /etc/chrome-remote-desktop-session file is convenient for a single standard environment. Use the per-user file when different accounts need different sessions or when you want to override the system-wide choice for one account. In either case, keep the command to a desktop startup command, not to a display manager login program.
Some desktop environments do not allow more than one session for the same user. Sign out of a local session, or choose a different environment, before testing the remote connection if the desktop refuses to start.
Authorize the VPS and create its access PIN
Installation alone does not register the server. Authorization is completed from a local computer in the Chrome Remote Desktop setup page.
- Open the Chrome Remote Desktop setup page on the local computer and choose the SSH setup path.
- Select Begin, then select Next. Because the host package is already installed, continue to the authorization step rather than installing it again.
- Select Authorize. Google displays a Debian Linux command generated for your account and host.
- Copy that command exactly and paste it into the VPS’s SSH terminal. It completes the account authorization and registers the host.
- When prompted, create a six-digit PIN. This PIN is required when you later open the machine from the remote-access page.
Run the generated command as the same VPS user whose desktop session you configured. A mismatch between the authorized account and the account owning .chrome-remote-desktop-session can make the service appear registered while launching the wrong home directory or session file.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Keep the PIN private. It is an authentication credential for the registered host, not a replacement for SSH keys, operating-system accounts, or normal server hardening. If you suspect the PIN is exposed, change it through the host’s Chrome Remote Desktop settings rather than sharing it in scripts or shell history.
Connect to the VPS from a browser
- On the local computer, open the Chrome Remote Desktop Remote Access page.
- Find the VPS under Remote devices.
- Select the VPS and enter the six-digit PIN you created during authorization.
- Wait for the browser session to create the X11 desktop. The result is the installed Linux desktop rendered inside the browser window.
Google states that remote desktop sessions are fully encrypted. The browser page is the connection interface; you do not need to install a separate conventional RDP client or publish an RDP service on the VPS.

If the host is not listed, return to SSH and check the service and journal before repeating authorization. Re-running the setup command without understanding the failure can create duplicate-looking registrations or leave the real desktop-session problem unchanged.
Networking: why port 3389 is normally unnecessary
Chrome Remote Desktop uses its own outbound connection and relay or traversal mechanisms rather than requiring you to expose a traditional RDP listener. Google’s troubleshooting guidance says the host needs internet connectivity and recommends allowing:
- Outbound UDP and the corresponding inbound UDP responses.
- TCP 443 for HTTPS.
- TCP and UDP 3478 for STUN.
Firewall syntax differs by provider and distribution, so apply those requirements to the VPS’s egress policy and any stateful return rules. Do not open public TCP 3389 merely because the goal is a graphical desktop; that port belongs to a different remote-desktop protocol and is not the documented requirement for this service.
These are connection requirements, not instructions to create an unauthenticated listener. Preserve normal stateful firewall behavior so return packets for outbound connections are accepted while unsolicited inbound traffic remains blocked. Also check cloud-provider security groups, because a provider-level egress restriction can override the VPS’s local firewall configuration.
If the VPS is behind a restrictive corporate firewall, blocked UDP or blocked STUN can prevent direct traversal and may leave the host unavailable even though the package and desktop are correctly installed. Test outbound connectivity and the provider’s network policy before changing desktop files.
Restrict connections to a LAN or VPN
Organizations that do not want firewall traversal can disable it with Chrome’s managed policy. On Linux, create or edit:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
/etc/opt/chrome/policies/managed/RemoteAccessHostFirewallTraversal.json
Set the policy to false in that file:
{
"RemoteAccessHostFirewallTraversal": false
}
With traversal disabled, plan to provide a reachable LAN or VPN path for the authorized client. Google recommends testing the policy in the target managed Chrome environment before applying it broadly; a policy that is syntactically valid can still make an otherwise healthy host unreachable if the client is not on the permitted network.
Apply this restriction only when you control the client network path. If the client is outside the LAN or VPN, disabling traversal can look like a broken host rather than a deliberate policy. Record the policy change so another administrator does not reopen traversal while troubleshooting an unrelated desktop issue.
Verify the host service and read its logs
When the VPS does not appear under Remote devices, or a connection opens and closes immediately, check the per-user systemd service from SSH:
sudo systemctl status chrome-remote-desktop@$USER
sudo systemctl restart chrome-remote-desktop@$USER
The first command shows whether the service is active and includes recent failure information. The second restarts it after a configuration change. Read the service journal with:

journalctl SYSLOG_IDENTIFIER=chrome-remote-desktop
journalctl SYSLOG_IDENTIFIER=chrome-remote-desktop -e
journalctl SYSLOG_IDENTIFIER=chrome-remote-desktop -b
-e moves to the end of the available log, while -b limits the view to the current boot. Look for a missing executable, a session command that exits, permission errors, or network failures before changing several variables at once.
Check status after every meaningful change: installing the desktop, editing a session file, disabling LightDM, changing a policy, or restarting the host. This creates a simple sequence in the journal and prevents a successful fix from being hidden by a later unrelated edit.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix a blank screen or a session that will not start
1. Confirm that a desktop is installed
Inspect the session command in /etc/chrome-remote-desktop-session and, when using a per-user configuration, ~/.chrome-remote-desktop-session. The command must name an environment actually installed on the VPS. For Xfce, the expected command from Google’s recipe is:
Recommended Free Tools
exec /etc/X11/Xsession /usr/bin/xfce4-session
If you selected Cinnamon, GNOME, or KDE, use the corresponding command from its installed .desktop file rather than assuming the Xfce path.
2. Remove the Xfce locker conflict
A blank Xfce screen that cannot be unlocked commonly indicates the Light Locker issue documented by Google. Install xscreensaver, use the Xfce session file shown earlier, and disable lightdm.service. Restart the Chrome Remote Desktop service after making those changes.
3. Check for a competing local session
If the same user is signed into another graphical environment, sign out locally or choose a desktop that supports the required concurrent-session arrangement. Some environments permit only one session per user, so the remote service can fail even though the package is healthy.
4. Check 3D-related settings
Chrome Remote Desktop does not support 3D graphics acceleration. Disable desktop effects or other 3D requirements in the selected environment. A session that depends on unsupported acceleration can fail during startup rather than presenting a clear desktop error.
5. Separate desktop failures from network failures
If systemd reports a running service and the session command is valid, inspect connectivity next: verify internet access from the VPS and confirm that outbound UDP, HTTPS 443, and STUN 3478 traffic are permitted with stateful responses. If the host starts but cannot be reached from the browser, a firewall or traversal policy is more likely than an Xfce package problem.
6. Recheck the account and file location
A system-wide session file and a per-user session file can point to different desktops. Confirm which user appears in the service unit, then inspect that user’s home directory and permissions. A correctly written command in another account’s home directory will not fix the active host.
7. Change one variable at a time
Do not simultaneously replace the desktop, edit the firewall, and rerun authorization. First establish that the service starts, then establish that the desktop command exits successfully, and only then investigate network reachability. The journal entries are most useful when each test has a clear purpose.

A practical setup checklist
- Use a 64-bit Debian-based VPS; Ubuntu 22.04 LTS is the release named in Canonical’s guide.
- Keep SSH access available for recovery and diagnostics.
- Install the host package from the current Debian repository or the current amd64 package instructions.
- Install one X11 desktop and window manager; choose Xfce when low graphical overhead matters.
- For Xfce, install
dbus-x11andxscreensaver, create/etc/chrome-remote-desktop-session, and disable LightDM as shown. - Authorize from the local setup page, run Google’s generated Debian command over SSH as the intended host user, and create a six-digit PIN.
- Connect through Remote Access and Remote devices in the browser.
- Allow the documented outbound and return traffic instead of publishing TCP 3389.
- For LAN- or VPN-only deployments, set
RemoteAccessHostFirewallTraversaltofalseand test reachability from the permitted network. - Use systemd status and journalctl output to distinguish service, desktop-session, and firewall problems.
What the official guidance does—and does not—promise
The documented setup establishes a supported installation path and the traffic and session settings needed to operate it. It does not establish a universal speed, memory, CPU, or latency figure for a generic Linux VPS. Your experience will depend on the VPS’s resources, the chosen desktop, the applications running inside the session, and the network path. Treat Xfce as a lower-overhead configuration choice, not as a published benchmark result.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFrequently Asked Questions
Do I need to open port 3389 for Chrome Remote Desktop?
No. Chrome Remote Desktop does not require a public RDP listener on TCP 3389. Follow Google’s documented outbound UDP, HTTPS 443, and STUN 3478 requirements with stateful return traffic.
Which Linux desktop is best for a VPS?
Xfce is the practical default, especially on slower links, because it uses relatively few graphical effects and animations. Cinnamon, GNOME, GNOME Classic, and KDE Plasma can also work when their sessions are configured correctly and 3D acceleration is avoided.
Why is my remote desktop blank?
For Xfce, install XScreenSaver, use the documented Xfce session command, and disable LightDM. Then verify that the session command names an installed desktop and check the Chrome Remote Desktop journal for startup errors.
How do I authorize a headless server?
Open the Chrome Remote Desktop setup page on a local computer, choose the SSH setup path, select Begin, Next, and Authorize, then paste Google’s generated Debian command into the VPS SSH terminal. Finish by creating a six-digit PIN.
Can I use an existing Cinnamon, GNOME, or KDE installation?
Yes. Put an Xsession command based on the selected desktop’s installed Exec= line in $HOME/.chrome-remote-desktop-session. Make sure the desktop supports the required session arrangement and does not depend on 3D acceleration.
How do I diagnose a host that is not listed under Remote devices?
From SSH, run sudo systemctl status chrome-remote-desktop@$USER, inspect journalctl SYSLOG_IDENTIFIER=chrome-remote-desktop, confirm the session file and desktop executable, and then verify internet, UDP, HTTPS 443, and STUN 3478 access.
Can I restrict Chrome Remote Desktop to a VPN or LAN?
Yes. Google documents setting RemoteAccessHostFirewallTraversal to false in /etc/opt/chrome/policies/managed/RemoteAccessHostFirewallTraversal.json. The client must then have a reachable LAN or VPN path, so test the policy in the managed Chrome environment first.
Is there an official CPU, RAM, bandwidth, or latency requirement?
No universal figure is published for a generic Linux VPS. Resource needs depend on the desktop, applications, and network path. Xfce is recommended as a lower-overhead choice, not as a guaranteed benchmark.
The Bottom Line
For the least troublesome deployment, use a 64-bit Debian-based VPS, install Chrome Remote Desktop and Xfce, add dbus-x11 and xscreensaver, configure the Xfce session file, and disable LightDM. Authorize the host through Google’s setup page, protect the six-digit PIN, and connect from Remote Access in your browser. Keep TCP 3389 closed, allow the documented outbound traffic, and use systemd and journalctl whenever the desktop is blank or the host disappears.
