To set up ChatGPT parental controls, link your account to your teen’s through Settings > Parental controls. Either of you can send the invitation by phone or email, but the recipient must accept it. Once linked, you can manage supported settings and schedules—but you cannot read your teen’s chats or see their real-time activity.
Link your account to your teen’s
OpenAI’s Help Center documents two ways to start. The parent or guardian can invite the teen, or the teen can invite the parent. In either case, the recipient accepts the invitation before the accounts are linked. The labels below refer to the web settings menu; availability and labels can vary by account.

Send an invitation as the parent or guardian
- Open ChatGPT, open the profile menu, and select Settings.
- Select Parental controls, then Add family member.
- Under Invite family member, choose Use phone or Use email.
- Enter your teen’s phone number or email address and select Send.
- Ask your teen to open the link in the text or email and accept the invitation. They may also receive an in-app notification.
- After acceptance, return to Settings > Parental controls and select your teen under Family members to manage available settings.
Invite the parent from the teen account
- On the teen account, open Settings > Parental controls.
- Select Invite a parent, choose phone or email, enter the parent or guardian’s contact information, and send the invitation.
- The parent opens the invitation and accepts it. Their name then appears under Family members on the teen account.
If a parent has already sent an invitation, the teen can accept it from Settings > Parental controls. OpenAI says a parent can link accounts with multiple teens, but a teen can be linked to only one parent or guardian at a time. Either person can unlink the accounts at any time. Select the teen under Family members in Settings > Parental controls to review available controls. OpenAI lists the following defaults, but availability and defaults may vary by setting or region.

Study hours and Quiet hours do different jobs
Choose Study hours if you want eligible new conversations to begin in a learning-oriented mode during a schedule. Choose Quiet hours if you want to block ChatGPT use during scheduled times. Study hours are not a time limit or access block; Quiet hours are.
Know what the ChatGPT Work controls cover
Codex network access and Cloud browser are separate ChatGPT Work controls. Turning off Codex network access prevents code run by ChatGPT Work from connecting to online services; it does not control search, plugins, connectors, or the Cloud browser. Turning off Cloud browser prevents ChatGPT Work from using its built-in browser.

Turning off most settings hides or blocks the associated feature, while turning one on makes it available subject to other ChatGPT safety protections. Some changes may not take effect immediately or may apply only to new conversations; existing conversations can retain their previous settings. OpenAI also says a parent can ask ChatGPT to review or update supported controls for a linked teen. The parent must review the requested change and choose Allow or Deny. Some settings, invitations, and linked-account management still require Settings > Parental controls. Details are in OpenAI’s parental-controls guide.

Understand what linking does—and does not—show you
Linking does not give a parent access to the teen’s conversations, chat history, or real-time activity. It lets the parent manage supported settings and may enable limited safety notifications; it is not a chat-monitoring feed.

OpenAI says it may send a notification in limited situations involving serious concerns. Its examples include a specially trained reviewer identifying a serious self-harm concern; a reviewer identifying behavior associated with disordered eating that could signal a health concern (Chat only, not Work or Codex); or an account deactivation related to violence under OpenAI’s Usage Policies. Notifications do not include chat transcripts or history, may not identify every concern, and are not real-time monitoring. They are enabled by default after linking, but may take a few hours to become available. Delivery methods can include email, SMS, or push notification.
If you receive a notification, OpenAI advises checking in with your teen and helping them reach a trusted person, qualified professional, or crisis helpline. If there may be immediate danger, contact local emergency services. The notification details and limits are described in OpenAI’s parental-controls guide.

Know how teen protections and age eligibility work
ChatGPT for Teens is enabled automatically for eligible accounts when account-provided age information, verified age, or age prediction indicates that the user is under 18. A parent does not need to enable the teen experience separately. Eligible teen accounts can use it on Free and paid personal plans, and parental linking is optional. OpenAI describes the experience as including age-appropriate protections and learning-oriented features. See ChatGPT for Teens and OpenAI’s explanation of age prediction.
To check the age category associated with an eligible personal account, the teen can open Settings > Account > Age. This shows a category; it does not let the user edit their birth date. A Verify age option is not available on every account.
When the account is classified as 18 or older
When ChatGPT identifies the account holder as 18 or older and the account moves out of the teen experience, teen protections turn off by default and linked parental controls end. The parent can no longer manage settings or receive teen safety notifications. If the account holder believes the classification is wrong, OpenAI says they can review the age category and complete age verification if that option is available; a parent cannot verify the teen’s age on their behalf. If verification confirms the account remains under 18, the accounts may need to be linked again. See OpenAI’s guidance on what changes at 18.
Unlinking ends parental management
Either person can unlink the accounts. If the teen unlinks, the parent is notified and can no longer manage settings or receive safety notifications for that account. The teen can see which settings are on or off, but cannot change settings managed by the linked parent. For account-linking and unlinking details, refer to OpenAI’s parental-controls guide.
