Android’s similarly named Extend Unlock does the opposite: it can keep the phone unlocked near a trusted Bluetooth device. Apple’s documented Mac settings offer idle-based locking and Apple Watch unlock, not an iPhone-triggered lock when you walk away.
Set up Bluetooth Dynamic Lock on Windows 10 or 11
Dynamic Lock uses the Bluetooth connection between a paired phone and Windows PC as a cue that you may have left. It is an additional safeguard, not a substitute for manually locking the computer when you leave sensitive information on screen. Microsoft’s Dynamic lock documentation, last updated December 2, 2024, says the PC must be idle when the phone’s signal falls below its threshold. If someone starts using the PC before that happens, Dynamic Lock will not lock it.

- Check Bluetooth on both devices. The Windows computer and phone need Bluetooth. If the PC has no Bluetooth, a compatible Bluetooth USB adapter may be an option; check its compatibility with your specific computer and Windows version. A PC with working built-in Bluetooth does not need an adapter.
- Pair the phone and PC in Windows. Open the Windows Bluetooth settings, start adding a device, and complete the pairing confirmation on both devices if prompted. Pairing is required before Dynamic Lock can use the phone’s signal.
- Turn on Dynamic Lock. Go to Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options, find Dynamic Lock, and enable the option to let Windows automatically lock the device when you are away. Wording can vary by Windows release.
- Try it in your normal workspace. Walk away with the phone and see how the PC behaves, then return and confirm that you can sign in using your usual method. Continue to lock the PC manually when you need immediate protection.
Why there is no guaranteed distance or countdown
Dynamic Lock responds to Bluetooth signal strength, not a fixed radius or timer. Microsoft’s administrator documentation describes default RSSI policy values of rssiMin="-10" and rssiMaxDelta="-10", while cautioning that measurements are relative and vary with the environment. Those values do not translate into a universal distance or promised delay. They are policy details for managed deployments, not settings ordinary users need to change; use the Windows Settings control instead.

What Android’s Bluetooth trusted-device setting does
Android’s Extend Unlock is not a way to lock a computer when your phone leaves. It can keep the Android phone unlocked while a trusted Bluetooth device remains connected. Google’s Android Help gives this path on supported devices:
- Turn on Bluetooth and pair the phone with the device you intend to trust.
- Open Settings > Security & privacy > More security & privacy > Extend Unlock > Trusted devices.
- Select the paired device and unlock the phone to confirm.
Menu names and availability can differ by Android version and phone manufacturer. Google advises choosing only trusted Bluetooth devices and avoiding devices likely to stay with the phone, such as a Bluetooth keyboard or case.

What Mac offers instead of an iPhone-away lock
Apple’s documented built-in Mac Lock Screen setting is based on inactivity, not an iPhone’s Bluetooth proximity. To set it, open Apple menu > System Settings > Lock Screen and choose how soon a password is required after the screen saver starts or the display turns off.
Apple Watch Auto Unlock works in the other direction
Apple Watch Auto Unlock can unlock an eligible Mac when the watch is nearby; it is not a feature that locks the Mac when an iPhone walks away. Apple says the Mac and watch need Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled, the same Apple Account with two-factor authentication, and a passcode set on the watch. On macOS Ventura 13 or later, enable the watch in System Settings > Touch ID & Password or Login Password, depending on the Mac model.

Apple’s published Mac guidance documents idle locking and Apple Watch Auto Unlock, but does not document a built-in iPhone-triggered Bluetooth-away lock. A third-party app would be separate software, so check its current availability and security properties independently before relying on it.
