To restart a YouTube encoder automatically on a Contabo VPS, run it as a foreground process managed by systemd, enable the service at boot, and set a restart policy with a short delay. This can relaunch the encoder after a process failure or VPS reboot; it cannot repair a bad source, credentials, network, or YouTube event state. Test recovery in YouTube Live Control Room rather than treating a running Linux service as proof that viewers have a healthy stream.
What automatic restart does—and what it cannot do
A service manager supervises the encoder process. If that process exits, a policy such as Restart=on-failure can start it again after a delay. Enabling the service at boot allows it to start when Linux comes back up.

This is different from rebooting the VPS. A service restart relaunches the encoder while the operating system stays up; a VPS reboot interrupts every process on the server. Contabo describes a control-panel reboot as shutting down and restarting the whole server and recommends using the operating system when it is accessible. Neither method guarantees that a YouTube broadcast resumes as the same live event. YouTube’s guidance covers encoder connections and stream-key settings, but does not promise a universal reconnect window or continuity outcome for every interruption. Confirm your VPS and Linux details
Contabo VPS plans differ in shared CPU, memory, storage, and network resources. Check your installed Linux distribution and available capacity before installing an encoder or choosing a service account. Contabo’s VPS documentation describes its plan families, but the commands and package names depend on your actual operating system. Contabo VPS documentation
Prove the encoder works interactively
Install and configure your chosen encoder for the distribution you run. Start it manually with a test source and confirm it can connect and send a feed before adding a supervisor. A restart policy only repeats the same command; it will not fix a broken command, missing media, invalid key, or unavailable network.

Get the correct YouTube ingest details
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the event in Live Control Room.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream, then enter them in the encoder configuration. YouTube describes the key as functioning like the stream’s password and address; do not share it. YouTube encoder setup
- Prefer the RTMPS URL when your encoder supports it. Use the exact endpoint YouTube supplies rather than assuming a hostname or path. YouTube’s RTMPS guidance requires the
rtmpsprotocol, a valid ingestion endpoint, and port 443. YouTube RTMPS ingestion guidance
Keep the stream key out of public files
Do not put a real key in a public script, a world-readable service file, or a command copied into shell history. Store it in a root-owned configuration file with access restricted to the service account, or use a secrets mechanism appropriate to your distribution. Grant only the permissions the encoder needs.
Create a systemd service for the encoder
Systemd unit details vary by Linux distribution, encoder, source, and service-account setup. The following is a configuration outline, not a drop-in unit: replace the illustrative values with the actual executable, arguments, paths, account, and protected key-loading method for your system. Keep the encoder in the foreground; if it daemonizes and exits, systemd may supervise the wrong process.

- Choose a dedicated service user and working directory. Ensure the account can read the media source and its protected configuration, and can write any required logs or temporary files.
- Define the service command. In the unit’s
[Service]section, set the service user, working directory, and the encoder’s full foreground command. Load the protected key configuration without placing the secret directly in a publicly readable unit. The encoder syntax and secret-loading method must match your OS and encoder. - Set restart behavior. Add a policy such as
Restart=on-failureand a modestRestartSecdelay. UseRestart=alwaysonly if restarting after clean exits is intended for your workflow. A delay avoids a tight restart loop when a persistent fault causes immediate exits. - Save the unit under a service name of your choice. Unit file locations and security settings can vary. Check your distribution’s systemd documentation and validate the unit before relying on it.
- Reload, enable, and start. After saving the unit, reload systemd’s unit definitions, enable the service so it starts at boot, then start it. Use the unit name you chose in the commands rather than assuming a universal service name.
- Inspect both Linux and YouTube. Check the service status and its journal logs, then verify the preview and stream health messages in Live Control Room. “Active” only reports process-manager state, not whether YouTube is receiving a usable feed.
For command syntax specific to the encoder, operating system, and source, use that software’s documentation; the official sources linked here do not publish a tested Contabo-specific systemd unit or a universal FFmpeg command line.

Use YouTube’s current encoder-settings table for bitrate recommendations; the appropriate value depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate, so there is no single bitrate to copy for every stream. YouTube’s guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video options; AAC or MP3 audio; constant-bitrate encoding; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. On the YouTube stream settings page, stream-key reuse, auto-start, and auto-stop are separate controls from systemd. Auto-start and auto-stop affect encoder-triggered start and stop behavior; they do not supervise the Linux process. Choose those settings deliberately for the event workflow and verify the event state after a reconnection. Manage live stream settings
Test process recovery and boot recovery
- Use a test event or otherwise safe test setup. YouTube recommends testing the encoder and monitoring stream health before a live broadcast. YouTube encoder testing and stream-health guidance
- Start the service and confirm that the encoder process is running, logs show a successful connection, and the YouTube preview receives the feed.
- Deliberately stop the encoder during the test. Confirm systemd launches it again after the configured delay, then check that YouTube receives the feed and that the event is in the expected state.
- If boot recovery matters, reboot the VPS during a maintenance window and verify that the enabled service starts and reconnects. A boot test interrupts all workloads on the server.
- Review logs after each test. Repeated restarts indicate an unresolved fault; increasing retries will not correct an invalid key, URL, source path, or network setup.
Troubleshoot common restart failures
