How to Set Up Automatic Pause and Bedtime Mode on Pixel Buds

Pixel Buds pause and resume audio when removed or reinserted with in-ear detection. A separate Pixel Watch integration handles bedtime mode.

Pixel Buds can pause audio when you take them out, then resume when you put them back in. That feature is called in-ear detection; it does not detect that you have fallen asleep. For bedtime, Pixel Buds offer a separate integration with a compatible Pixel Watch’s bedtime mode.

Choose the behavior you want

Feature What triggers it What it does What you need
In-ear detection You remove or reinsert the earbuds. Pauses media when removed and resumes it when returned to your ears. Configure it in Pixel Buds settings. Google’s specifications attribute this sensing to infrared proximity sensors.
Pixel Watch bedtime mode Your watch enters or exits bedtime mode. Pauses currently playing media and can disable earbud touch controls, Hey Google detection, and nonessential earcons. A Pixel Watch with auto-bedtime mode support.

Google documents these as two distinct behaviors: in-ear detection responds to the earbuds being taken out, while bedtime behavior follows the watch. Google does not describe Pixel Buds as independently detecting sleep. Google’s in-ear detection instructions and Pixel Watch bedtime mode instructions explain each feature.

Set up in-ear detection

On a Pixel phone

On a Pixel phone running Android 10 or later, use the phone’s Bluetooth device settings:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Connected devices.
  3. Tap the settings icon beside your paired Pixel Buds.
  4. Find In-ear detection. On Pixel Buds Pro, Pixel Buds Pro 2, and Pixel Buds 2a, open More settings first. On Pixel Buds (2020) and Pixel Buds A-Series, scroll to the in-ear detection toggle.

On another Android device

Open the Google Pixel Buds app and manage the in-ear detection setting there. Google’s support instructions say in-ear detection is enabled automatically when Pixel Buds are paired with an Android 6.0 or later device with Fast Pair enabled. It remains enabled for connected host devices unless you turn it off. See Google’s model-specific settings guidance.

What happens when detection is on or off

When the buds detect that you have taken them out, the current audio selection automatically pauses. Putting them back in resumes playback; while audio is paused, a single tap can also resume it. If you turn in-ear detection off, triple-tap the right earbud to manually put the earbuds to sleep or wake them.

Use Pixel Watch bedtime mode

Bedtime mode is for reducing earbud activity while you sleep, rather than pausing audio in response to removing an earbud. It requires a Pixel Watch with auto-bedtime mode support. When the watch enters bedtime mode, supported Pixel Buds automatically pause currently playing media, disable touch controls, turn off Hey Google hotword detection, and suppress earcons such as low-battery chimes. Temporary control disabling is on by default. The buds leave bedtime mode when the watch’s bedtime mode ends; you can also exit by placing the buds in their case or answering a call. Google’s Pixel Watch bedtime mode guide lists the compatibility requirement and behavior.

Know the exceptions

  • Multipoint playback: Media on a secondary connected device may not pause automatically when bedtime mode begins. Pause that device manually.
  • Phone reboot: If the phone reboots, the earbuds may miss the signal to leave bedtime mode. Unlock the phone or put the buds in their case.
  • Emergency and locating sounds: Emergency ringtones and Find My Device remain active during bedtime mode.
