The reliable pattern is a single update wrapper run by Windows Task Scheduler or a Linux systemd timer. It records maintenance, stops DayZ, runs SteamCMD against the correct app ID, captures the exit code and logs, starts the server only after a successful update, performs a readiness check, and posts a concise result to a Discord webhook. If SteamCMD fails, the wrapper leaves the server stopped and alerts you instead of starting a partially updated installation.
Prefer not to run the server on your own PC? Godlike.Host offers hosted DayZ servers with free DDoS protection and up to three free backups a day.
What the automatic update workflow should do
Steam game servers are updated with SteamCMD. For DayZ, the stable dedicated-server app ID used in current setup references is 223350. A complete unattended workflow has these stages:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Acquire a lock. Prevent two scheduled jobs from changing the same installation at once.
- Mark maintenance. Write a timestamp and an “update started” event to the local log and Discord.
- Stop DayZ cleanly. Wait for the process or service to exit before touching files.
- Run SteamCMD. Use
+force_install_dir, authenticate with the account permitted to download the server, and execute+app_update 223350 +quit. Addvalidateonly when you deliberately want file-integrity verification. - Check the result. Capture SteamCMD’s process exit code and preserve standard output and error output in a timestamped log.
- Restart conditionally. Start DayZ with the same configuration, startup parameters and mods only if every required update command succeeded.
- Verify readiness. Confirm the process is running and, ideally, that the expected game port is listening.
- Notify Discord. Post a short success, failure or restart-failed message without exposing credentials, webhook URLs or unfiltered logs.
This sequence is more important than the scheduler you choose. A scheduler only launches the wrapper; the wrapper owns safety decisions and returns a non-zero exit code when a run fails.
Requirements and decisions before automation
| Item | What to decide |
|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows Server/Desktop with Task Scheduler, or Linux with a dedicated service account and systemd (another scheduler can invoke the same script). |
| Install directory | Use one absolute path for SteamCMD’s +force_install_dir, the DayZ executable, configuration files and logs. Quote paths that contain spaces. |
| Branch | Stable uses app ID 223350 in current DayZ setup documentation. A hosting reference lists experimental as 1042420. Treat this as configuration and stage branch changes on a test copy. |
| Authentication | Use the Steam account or anonymous login permitted for your installation. Keep credentials outside scripts and source control. |
| Mods | If Workshop content is required, update every required item during the same maintenance transaction and restart only when all downloads succeed. |
| Maintenance window | Choose a period that gives SteamCMD enough time to download files and gives players notice. Validation can make startup substantially longer. |
| Recovery | Keep a tested backup or snapshot if you need rollback. Do not claim rollback exists merely because a backup directory is present; test restoration before relying on it. |
| Discord secret | Create a webhook in the destination channel, store its URL in an environment variable or protected secret store, and rotate it immediately if exposed. |
Windows setup with PowerShell and Task Scheduler
1. Create a predictable directory layout
For example, keep the server under C:DayZServer, SteamCMD under C:steamcmd, and logs under C:DayZServerlogs. Keep your existing startup parameters in one place so the updater cannot accidentally launch a different configuration.

Use +app_update 1042420 only when the installation is intentionally on the experimental branch. Confirm that SteamCMD reaches a successful completion before adding scheduling or Discord calls.

3. Use a wrapper that owns stop, update, restart and notification logic
The following is a production-oriented pattern. Change the executable name and startup arguments to match your installation. The webhook URL is read from DISCORD_WEBHOOK_URL; it is never hard-coded.
$ErrorActionPreference = 'Stop'
$Root = 'C:DayZServer'
$SteamCmd = 'C:steamcmdsteamcmd.exe'
$ServerExe = Join-Path $Root 'DayZServer_x64.exe'
$LogDir = Join-Path $Root 'logs'
$LockPath = Join-Path $Root 'dayz-update.lock'
$AppId = '223350'
$timestamp = Get-Date -Format 'yyyyMMdd-HHmmss'
$LogPath = Join-Path $LogDir "update-$timestamp.log"
New-Item -ItemType Directory -Force -Path $LogDir | Out-Null
function Send-Discord([string]$Message) {
if ([string]::IsNullOrWhiteSpace($env:DISCORD_WEBHOOK_URL)) { return }
$payload = @{ content = $Message } | ConvertTo-Json -Compress
Invoke-RestMethod -Method Post -Uri $env:DISCORD_WEBHOOK_URL -ContentType 'application/json' -Body $payload | Out-Null
}
$lock = $null
try {
$lock = [System.IO.File]::Open($LockPath, [System.IO.FileMode]::OpenOrCreate, [System.IO.FileAccess]::ReadWrite, [System.IO.FileShare]::None)
} catch {
exit 2
}
try {
"$(Get-Date -Format o) update started on $env:COMPUTERNAME" | Tee-Object -FilePath $LogPath
Send-Discord "DayZ update started on $env:COMPUTERNAME (app $AppId)."
$old = Get-Process -Name 'DayZServer_x64' -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue
if ($old) {
$old | Stop-Process
if (-not ($old | Wait-Process -Timeout 60 -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue)) {
throw 'DayZ did not stop within 60 seconds.'
}
}
$args = @('+force_install_dir', $Root, '+login', 'anonymous', '+app_update', $AppId, '+quit')
$steam = Start-Process -FilePath $SteamCmd -ArgumentList $args -Wait -PassThru -RedirectStandardOutput $LogPath -RedirectStandardError ($LogPath + '.err')
if ($steam.ExitCode -ne 0) { throw "SteamCMD failed with exit code $($steam.ExitCode)." }
$server = Start-Process -FilePath $ServerExe -WorkingDirectory $Root -ArgumentList '-config=serverDZ.cfg' -PassThru
Start-Sleep -Seconds 10
if ($server.HasExited) { throw 'DayZ exited during the startup check.' }
Send-Discord "DayZ update succeeded on $env:COMPUTERNAME; server process is running."
exit 0
} catch {
$message = "DayZ update failed on $env:COMPUTERNAME: $($_.Exception.Message). Inspect $LogPath."
Add-Content -Path $LogPath -Value $message
Send-Discord $message
exit 1
} finally {
if ($lock) { $lock.Dispose() }
}
The lock uses exclusive file access, so a second invocation exits before it can stop the server. For a graceful stop, replace the process stop block with the control mechanism supplied by your service wrapper; a forced termination should be a last resort. Add a port probe such as Test-NetConnection after startup if process existence alone is not sufficient for your setup.

4. Add the scheduled task
- Open Task Scheduler and select Create Task, not the simplified wizard.
- On General, choose an account with permission to stop and start the server and to write the install and log directories. Enable Run whether user is logged on or not if appropriate.
- On Triggers, create a weekly or daily trigger during the maintenance window. Add a delay if the machine performs other backups at the same time.
- On Actions, start
powershell.exewith arguments such as-NoProfile -ExecutionPolicy Bypass -File C:DayZServerUpdate-DayZ.ps1. Set Start in toC:DayZServer. - On Settings, enable Do not start a new instance, stop a task that runs too long only after a deliberately chosen timeout, and retain task history.
- Run the task manually once. Confirm the server stops, SteamCMD completes, the server returns, the expected port accepts connections and Discord receives the event.
Task Scheduler records the wrapper’s non-zero exit code, but it does not replace the local log. Keep both when diagnosing a failed update.
Linux setup with a dedicated account and systemd
Do not run DayZ as root
Bohemia Interactive’s Linux hosting guidance explicitly warns not to run the server as root. Create a dedicated account, give it ownership of the DayZ and SteamCMD directories, and restrict read access to the file containing Steam credentials and the Discord webhook.

Write the update wrapper

Store STEAM_USER and DISCORD_WEBHOOK_URL in a root-readable or service-protected environment file, not in the script. If your server does not use Workshop mods, remove the Workshop command. If it uses several items, include every required item and treat any failed download as a failed transaction.
Schedule it with a systemd timer
Create /etc/systemd/system/dayz-update.service:
[Unit]
Description=Update DayZ and restart the server
[Service]
Type=oneshot
User=dayz
EnvironmentFile=/etc/dayz/dayz-update.env
ExecStart=/home/dayz/bin/update-dayz.sh
Then create /etc/systemd/system/dayz-update.timer:
[Unit]
Description=Scheduled DayZ update
[Timer]
OnCalendar=Sun *-*-* 04:00:00 UTC
Persistent=true
RandomizedDelaySec=15m
[Install]
WantedBy=timers.target
Enable it with sudo systemctl daemon-reload and sudo systemctl enable --now dayz-update.timer. Inspect runs with systemctl list-timers and journalctl -u dayz-update.service. The timer’s calendar is an example; select a UTC window that matches your players’ schedule.
Creating and using the Discord webhook
- Open the target Discord text channel, choose Edit Channel, open Integrations, select Webhooks, and create a webhook.
- Choose the destination channel and copy the generated webhook URL.
- Place the URL in the protected environment used by the updater. Do not commit it to a repository, paste it into a public issue or include it in SteamCMD output.
- Send three event classes: update started, update succeeded, and update failed. Add a fourth “restart failed” event when SteamCMD succeeded but the health check did not.
A useful success message contains the host, branch or app ID, SteamCMD exit code, elapsed time and restart result. A failure message contains the exit code, the last useful log lines or a short error, and the path to the complete local log. Keep messages short enough to scan on a phone. If the URL is exposed, delete or rotate the webhook and update the secret immediately.

When to use SteamCMD validate
validate checks installed files against the expected depot contents, but it can make a maintenance window and the following startup substantially longer. A practical policy is:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Routine update: run
+app_update 223350 +quitwithout validation. - Suspected corruption: add
validateafter an interrupted download, unexplained crashes, missing files or log messages indicating corruption. - Planned repair: schedule validation when player impact is acceptable and monitor disk and network usage.
- Branch change: test the exact app ID and validation behavior on a copy before applying it to a populated production installation.
Do not add validation merely because it sounds safer. It verifies files; it does not replace backups, configuration checks, mod compatibility testing or a startup health check.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Failure handling, retries and rollback
Keep the server stopped after an update error
If SteamCMD returns a non-zero exit code, preserve the output and do not start DayZ. Retrying automatically can be useful for a transient network failure, but bound the policy: for example, use two retries with a delay, then send one failure alert and leave the service stopped. Never loop indefinitely during a maintenance window.
Separate update success from restart success
SteamCMD can succeed while the executable fails because of a bad parameter, missing library, incompatible mod or a port conflict. Emit a distinct restart-failed alert, capture service status and process output, and leave the machine in a known state. A green update message must not imply that players can connect until the readiness check passes.
Best Value
Use maintenance markers and logs
Write a start timestamp, app ID or branch, command outcome, elapsed time and restart result. Keep failed logs longer than successful logs. A small marker file can tell external monitoring that maintenance is in progress and prevent false outage alerts; remove it in a finally-equivalent cleanup block even when the script fails.
Only rely on tested rollback
A rollback plan should identify what is backed up, where the backup lives, how the service is stopped, and how the previous files and configuration are restored. Test that procedure on a non-production copy. If no tested rollback exists, state that clearly in the failure alert rather than implying SteamCMD can downgrade safely.
Stable and experimental branches
| Branch | App ID in cited setup references | Operational guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Stable dedicated server | 223350 |
Use for the normal production installation unless you have deliberately selected another branch. |
| Experimental | 1042420 (listed by a current hosting reference) |
Keep in a separate install or staging copy. Confirm mod compatibility and startup parameters before switching production. |
Branch selection belongs in configuration, not as an ad-hoc edit to a scheduled command. Record the selected app ID in each notification so an operator can immediately see which branch was updated.
Self-hosting versus managed hosting
Automation requirements are similar in either model, but responsibility moves between you and the provider. Ask for written answers to the following before choosing a service.
| Capability | Self-hosted question | Managed-hosting question |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Can your Windows or Linux account run SteamCMD and a persistent service? | Are both Windows and Linux supported, and which is actually used for the server? |
| Game and mod updates | Does your wrapper update the game and every required Workshop item atomically? | Are game and mod updates automatic, scheduled, and independently controllable? |
| Validation | Can the script enable validate only for repair runs? |
Is validation configurable, and does the panel explain the extra maintenance time? |
| Restart and health checks | Do systemd or Task Scheduler logs show stop, start and readiness results? | Does the provider verify process and port health or only report that a command ran? |
| Backups and rollback | Have you restored a backup on a test copy? | What is backed up, how often, how long is it retained, and can you restore a prior version? |
| Parameters and logs | Can you inspect the full SteamCMD and server logs? | Can you download logs and edit startup parameters without support intervention? |
| Branch control | Is the app ID stored as a reviewed configuration value? | Can you select stable or experimental without silently changing the installation? |
| Discord integration | Can the wrapper post to your own webhook without leaking it? | Does the panel support webhook events and secret rotation? |
| Capacity and location | Do your CPU, RAM, storage and network meet your player count and latency goals? | What player, storage, CPU/RAM and geographic limits apply, and what is the total recurring cost? |
| Support | Are you prepared to diagnose SteamCMD, mods and operating-system failures? | Which failures are covered, and what response time applies during an update outage? |
A managed panel is convenient only if it exposes the controls and logs you need. Self-hosting gives maximum parameter and recovery control but makes you responsible for patch timing, security, backups and monitoring.

Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Two update jobs overlap | No lock or the scheduler allows parallel instances. | Add an exclusive file lock or mutex and configure the scheduler to disallow a new instance. |
| SteamCMD exits non-zero | Network outage, authentication issue, locked files or an invalid install path. | Read the timestamped SteamCMD log, correct the underlying issue, then run the exact command manually before re-enabling automation. |
| Server starts with old or missing mods | Workshop downloads were omitted or treated as optional. | Update every required item in the same transaction and fail the wrapper if any item fails. |
| Validation consumes the whole window | validate was enabled on every run. |
Remove it from routine updates and reserve it for corruption or planned repair. |
| Process runs but players cannot connect | Port not listening, firewall change, wrong startup parameters or a failed mod load. | Probe the expected port, inspect server output and verify the service’s working directory and parameters. |
| Discord receives nothing | Missing or revoked webhook, blocked outbound HTTPS or malformed JSON. | Test the webhook with a minimal POST, check the secret environment and log notification failures without stopping the primary update result. |
| Webhook URL appears in a log | The command line or error output included the secret. | Rotate the webhook, remove the exposed log, and pass the URL only through a protected environment variable. |
| Task reports success but server is down | The wrapper checked only SteamCMD and not restart health. | Make process and port readiness part of the success condition and emit a separate restart-failed event. |
Pre-production test checklist
- Run the exact wrapper manually against a copy of the installation.
- Confirm the lock prevents a second invocation.
- Stop the server and verify it does not write active files during the SteamCMD transaction.
- Test a successful update and inspect the complete log.
- Simulate a failed SteamCMD command and confirm the server remains stopped and Discord receives a failure message.
- Test a startup failure separately and verify the restart-failed alert.
- Verify the expected game port, player connection and mod load before calling the run successful.
- Check that credentials and webhook URLs are absent from scripts, command history and notifications.
- Test validation on a staging copy and measure the longer maintenance time.
- Restore a backup on a non-production copy if rollback is part of your recovery promise.
