Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallOpenClaw can automate the path from a reported failure to a reviewed GitHub pull request, but it does not provide one official, all-in-one bug-fixing wizard. A reliable setup combines a trigger (such as a failed test, error log, or chat report), GitHub access, a terminal/testing capability, and OpenClaw’s Doctor and automations features. Keep the agent review-gated: it may diagnose problems, edit a branch, run tests, and open a pull request, but a person should review every generated change before merging.

What automatic bug fixing with OpenClaw actually does
The practical workflow is an assembly of three layers rather than a single OpenClaw command:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Detection: OpenClaw receives a structured failure from a test runner, log stream, issue, or chat message containing a stack trace.
- Change execution: A GitHub integration lets it inspect the repository, create a branch, commit changes, read issues and comments, and open a pull request. A terminal capability lets it run the project’s test and lint commands.
- Operations: Doctor checks the installation and repairs or reports configuration problems, while automations schedules recurring or event-driven runs.
The agent should classify the failure, identify a probable root cause, make the smallest defensible change, run the relevant checks, and publish its work as a pull request. This is autonomous implementation, not autonomous approval. The safe default is no direct push to a protected branch and no automatic merge.
Before you automate: define the boundary
Write down what the agent is allowed to touch before connecting a repository. A narrow scope makes failures easier to diagnose and limits the damage from a bad interpretation of a report.

- Specify the commands that are safe to run and the maximum time or resource budget for them.
- Require a pull request for every code change. Do not grant permission to merge or to rewrite protected branches.
- Decide what happens when tests fail after the edit: the agent should report the failure and stop, not keep making unrelated changes.
There is no published OpenClaw success-rate statistic that can predict how often this process will fix your defects. Measure it in your own repository instead: record each trigger, diagnosis, pull request, test result, human disposition, and rollback.
Step 1: run OpenClaw Doctor first
Doctor is the first gate because an agent with a broken configuration, unavailable skill, invalid credentials, or an unreachable Gateway cannot produce trustworthy fixes. The official Doctor documentation describes diagnostics, migrations, health checks, and repair operations. Its exact checks can change between releases, so inspect the help output for the version you have installed.
Use read-only checks during setup
- Run
openclaw doctor --jsonto obtain a machine-readable diagnostic report without asking Doctor to edit your state. - Run
openclaw doctor --lintwhen you want a read-only check suitable for a CI gate. - Review the results for configuration syntax, model authentication, Gateway connectivity, Node.js compatibility, and any unavailable skills or binaries. Some of these checks are described in third-party troubleshooting guidance; confirm the behavior against the current OpenClaw documentation.
Use openclaw doctor --fix only when an operator has deliberately approved changes to configuration or state. Repair mode can write a backup, remove unknown configuration keys, and attempt common repairs, but those behaviors are release-dependent. Treat the backup as mandatory and inspect the diff afterward.
When to run Doctor again
Run Doctor after every OpenClaw update and after each plugin or skill installation. It also checks cron-related state, including jobs left marked as in flight, and can migrate historical cron stores into the shared SQLite state database. Resolve warnings before enabling unattended runs; an unavailable skill that is harmless in an interactive session can make a scheduled job fail repeatedly.
Step 2: choose and normalize the bug trigger
OpenClaw works best when every trigger is converted into the same compact incident record. Include the repository, commit or branch, failing command, complete error output, timestamp, and a link or identifier for the originating issue or message. Remove credentials and personal data from logs before sending them to the agent.
| Trigger | Useful input | Strength | Typical hazard |
|---|---|---|---|
| Failed test result | Command, exit code, test name, stack trace, commit SHA | Reproducible and easy to verify | Flaky tests can create unnecessary pull requests |
| Error log | Timestamp, service version, exception, surrounding log lines, deployment context | Catches production symptoms that tests missed | Logs may be incomplete, duplicated, or contain secrets |
| Chat or issue report | Plain-language symptom plus stack trace, steps to reproduce, affected version | Captures reports that never reached CI | Ambiguous descriptions can lead to speculative edits |
Have the first agent response be a structured diagnosis rather than an immediate edit. Require it to state the suspected root cause, evidence, files it expects to change, tests it will run, and conditions under which it will stop and ask for clarification. This separates classification errors from implementation errors.

Step 3: connect repository and terminal capabilities
The bug-fixing workflow needs two distinct capabilities. A GitHub skill or integration handles repository operations; a terminal skill handles local commands. OpenClaw’s public documentation does not provide a single authoritative page naming a universal GitHub skill or installation command, and plugin names can change. Use the skill and plugin instructions for the exact release you run rather than copying an unverified command from a tutorial.
GitHub capability
Confirm that the integration can perform all of the following in the target repository:
- Read source files, history, issues, and comments.
- Create a branch from the requested base branch.
- Write files and create commits on that branch.
- Open a pull request and add a clear description of the diagnosis, tests, and remaining risks.
- Read review comments so a human can request a follow-up change.
Terminal capability
Give the agent an explicit test command for each repository. Common examples are npm test, python -m pytest, and cargo test; use the project’s actual scripts, environment setup, and service dependencies instead of assuming these commands apply. If a test needs a database, container, network service, or special environment variable, document how a sandbox supplies it. Never put production credentials in the agent’s environment just to make a test pass.
Step 4: create a narrowly scoped GitHub token
Use a fine-grained personal access token dedicated to this automation. A commonly recommended scope is read/write access to repository contents and pull requests, with read-only access to issues. Repository administrator privileges are optional and should not be granted for ordinary bug fixing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Limit the token to the specific repositories the agent needs.
- Do not grant organization administration, workflow administration, secret management, or branch-protection bypass unless a separate, documented process requires it.
- Store the token in OpenClaw’s secret mechanism or an equivalent protected environment variable; never commit it to the repository or include it in prompts and logs.
- Set an owner and a rotation date. One integration guide recommends rotating tokens about every 90 days; treat that as an operational policy, not a universal OpenClaw requirement.
- Revoke the token immediately if it appears in output, a commit, or an incident report.
Test the connection against a sandbox repository first. A successful authentication check does not prove that the token can create branches or pull requests, so perform each required operation with a disposable branch.
Step 5: define the agent’s repair contract
Use a written instruction or workflow file that makes the stopping rules explicit. A useful contract requires the agent to:

- Confirm the repository, base branch, commit, and supplied failure.
- Reproduce the failure before editing whenever reproduction is possible.
- Inspect nearby tests and recent history, then state a root-cause hypothesis supported by evidence.
- Make the smallest change that addresses the failure. Do not refactor unrelated code or update dependencies opportunistically.
- Add or adjust a regression test when the project’s conventions support it.
- Run the specified focused test first, then the broader test suite or lint checks.
- Stop if the failure cannot be reproduced, if required credentials are missing, or if the proposed change would affect protected systems.
- Create a branch and pull request containing the diagnosis, files changed, exact commands run, results, and known limitations.
For headless execution, put every approval decision in this contract. Cron, Telegram, and other non-terminal runs cannot answer an interactive prompt that appears halfway through a repair.
Step 6: test in a sandbox with known failures
Do not begin with live production alerts. Seed a disposable repository with several known scenarios: a deterministic failing test, a syntax error with a clear stack trace, a report that cannot be reproduced, and a failure requiring a missing dependency. Verify that OpenClaw diagnoses each case correctly, changes only the permitted branch, runs the expected commands, and opens a pull request instead of pushing directly to the protected branch.

The agent should refuse to expose secrets from logs, decline requests to disable tests, stop when a token lacks permission, and report a failing test rather than repeatedly changing code. Keep these scenarios as regression tests for the automation itself.
Step 7: schedule runs with Automations
OpenClaw’s current terminology is automations. Jobs and run history are stored in a shared SQLite state database. The exact subcommands can vary, but the documented inspection pattern includes:
openclaw automations listto see configured jobs and their enabled state.- Run-history queries filtered by status or delivery state to identify failures, skipped deliveries, and jobs that never completed. Use the release’s built-in help to confirm the precise query syntax.
Prevent silent scheduling failures
Two configuration disable settings can stop scheduling without an obvious error. If jobs are unexpectedly idle, inspect both settings, clear them only when you intend to re-enable scheduling, and restart the Gateway. Doctor can report jobs that have been marked state.autoDisabled; an automatic disable is a signal to investigate the underlying failures, not a reason to keep retrying blindly.
After enabling a job, trigger one controlled run and inspect its history before waiting for the next interval. Confirm that the run reached the intended repository, used the expected commit, delivered its result, and created no duplicate pull requests.

Release-specific scheduling caution
Release notes for v2026.9.7 state that scripts creating system-event jobs should remove the --timeout-seconds flag from those commands. Because command-line behavior is volatile, check the release notes and --help output for the version installed in your environment before changing an existing script.
Polling or webhooks for GitHub events?
Polling is the simpler starting point and generally works behind firewalls, but it introduces a delay and consumes API rate-limit quota. A webhook can deliver events with lower latency, but it adds endpoint, authentication, and availability requirements. Whichever method you use, deduplicate events by repository, commit, and failure identifier so a repeated notification does not create a second repair branch.
| Choice | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Polling | Small teams, private networks, initial rollout | Slight delay and additional API requests |
| Webhook | Near-real-time response with an internet-reachable receiver | More endpoint security and operational maintenance |
Choose the right autonomy level
| Level | What OpenClaw does | Recommended use |
|---|---|---|
| Diagnosis only | Reads the failure and posts a root-cause hypothesis and proposed patch | First production trial or high-risk code |
| Branch and pull request | Edits a branch, runs checks, and opens a PR for review | Default for routine maintenance |
| Direct push or merge | Writes to a protected or release branch without a human gate | Not recommended for general bug fixing |
Even a passing test suite does not prove that an agent’s patch is correct. Review the diff, test coverage, error-handling paths, dependency changes, and security implications. Require the reviewer to confirm that the original failure is addressed and that the change does not weaken an existing control.
Troubleshooting common failures
Doctor reports an unavailable skill
The warning can mean a missing binary, environment variable, configuration entry, or operating-system requirement. Install or configure the dependency in the runtime used by the Gateway, not only in your interactive shell, then run Doctor again. If the capability is not required for a particular job, remove it from that job’s allowed skills instead of granting broad access.
Recommended Free Tools
The automation never starts
Check the two scheduling-disable settings, the Gateway process, and whether the job was marked state.autoDisabled. Inspect run history for in-flight jobs and delivery failures. Run Doctor to handle cron-state checks and any migration into SQLite, then restart the Gateway and perform a manual test run.
The agent cannot open a pull request
Verify that the token is scoped to the repository and has write access to contents and pull requests. Confirm that branch protection does not require a permission the token cannot provide. A token that can read issues may still be unable to create a branch or PR.
Best Value
A scheduled run waits for approval forever
Headless jobs cannot answer interactive prompts. Move the approval rule into the workflow: for example, allow edits only in a named sandbox repository and require a PR for every change. If a decision cannot be encoded safely, make the job diagnosis-only and notify a person instead of running unattended.
The agent creates too many pull requests
Deduplicate triggers, require reproduction before editing, and cap one active repair branch per failure identifier. Mark flaky tests and transient infrastructure errors as non-code incidents so they do not enter the patching loop. Review automation history for repeated retries and disable the job while investigating.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Operate and upgrade it safely
Back up OpenClaw configuration and state before upgrades. After upgrading, run Doctor, inspect skill availability, verify the Gateway, and execute one sandbox repair before re-enabling production schedules. Recheck automation flags and run history because a release can migrate cron state or alter command-line behavior.
Keep a small audit record for each repair: trigger payload, model or agent configuration, repository and commit, branch name, commands executed, test output, pull-request URL, reviewer decision, and any rollback. This record lets you distinguish a bad diagnosis from a bad patch and gives you evidence for tightening permissions or changing prompts.
A practical rollout sequence
- Prepare a sandbox repository and document its test commands.
- Run
openclaw doctor --jsonandopenclaw doctor --lint; resolve warnings. - Connect the terminal capability and verify deterministic tests.
- Connect GitHub with a repository-limited fine-grained token.
- Run diagnosis-only tests against known failures.
- Enable branch-and-PR behavior and review every generated pull request.
- Schedule a low-frequency automation, inspect its SQLite-backed history, and confirm delivery.
- Expand the trigger set only after duplicate events, flaky tests, permissions, and headless approval behavior are understood.
This staged approach gives OpenClaw useful autonomy while keeping the irreversible decision—merging code—under human control.
